On this day, 1 June 1985, British police brutally attacked new age travellers (i.e. not GRT people) heading to Stonehenge in the Battle of the Beanfield.
Police smashed the windows of vehicles travellers and others were using, dragged people out through the broken glass, beating them and breaking teeth, glasses and bones. Pregnant women were clubbed, and police set several of the travellers' vehicles on fire.
Officers then arrested 537 people, the biggest mass arrest of civilians in many years, and systematically looted, smashed and burned travellers' homes. Seven healthy dogs belonging to travellers were later killed by the RSPCA.
The media portrayed the travellers as a marauding army, with the BBC showing ordinary household implements which had been seized, describing them as "weapons gathered up". ITN journalist Kim Sabido recorded what she had seen:
"What we've witnessed in the last half hour here has been surely some of the most brutal action by the police forces in Britain for a long time… hitting out wildly by the police… Young women with babies in their arms were hit as well. At one stage one of the cameramen from Fleet Street was arrested for being on this site - we were pushed and shoved to one side, but the worst of it all was that the people in those coaches who were trying to escape from the police were just grabbed, their windows were smashed and they themselves were just beaten, sometimes senselessly, on the floor."
His commentary was removed from the video footage when it aired on the news.
Participants believed they were targeted by the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher in order to smash new age traveller culture. One participant told activist newsletter Schnews:
"The number of people who were living on buses had been doubling every year for four years. It was anarchy in action, and it was seen to be working by so many people that they wanted to be a part of it too."

Richard Jomshof foddes Jorma Lohikoski efter sin far som invandrade till Sverige från Finland på 1960-talet. Han är utbildad gymnasielärare i samhällskunskap, historia, geografi och psykologi vid Malmö högskola. Han har tidigare förlorat sina anställningar och vid några tillfällen inte fått lärartjänster på grund av sina politiska åsikter.

Efter riksdagsvalet 2022 och Tidöavtalet med Moderaterna, Kristdemokraterna och Liberalerna blev Jomshof ordförande i riksdagens justitieutskott från 4 oktober 2022.[1]

Efter att Jomshof i juli 2023 kallat profeten Muhammed för massmördare och slavhandlare framställde Socialdemokraterna, Vänsterpartiet, Centerpartiet och Miljöpartiet tillsammans krav på att Jomshof skulle avgå som ordförande i justitieutskottet.[28] Vid justitieutskottets första sammanträde efter sommaruppehållet 2023 ställde sig dock regeringspartierna bakom Jomshof som ordförande och han behöll därmed sin roll i utskottet. En av moderaternas utskottsledamöter avfärdade det hela för "inrikespolitiskt tjafs".

I september 2024 blev Jomshof delgiven misstanke om hets mot folkgrupp efter att han delat två islamkritiska satirteckningar på X,[30] vilket han själv gick ut med i en intervju i Kvartal. Som en följd av det valde han att tillfälligt kliva av sin roll som ordförande i justitieutskottet. Den 25 september 2024 valde chefsåklagaren på särskilda åklagarkammaren att lägga ner förundersökningen. Jomshof återgick då till sin post som utskottsordförande.

Jomshof meddelade den 10 februari 2025 sin avgång som ordförande i justitieutskottet, som en följd av att han framfört kritik mot Tidöpartiernas förslag om att förbjuda vissa halvautomatiska vapen.

Richard Jomshof nu arbetar med en bok om islam som enligt honom planeras ges ut i augusti 2026 av partiledaren Jimmie Åkesson på dennes eget förlag.

As a world-renowned semiotician, he understood better than anyone how symbols and words shape our collective reality. But toward the end of his life, he looked at the digital landscape and saw a structural collapse of intellectual hierarchy.

Eco observed: Social media gives legions of idiots the right to speak when they once only spoke at a bar after a glass of wine, without harming the community... but now they have the same right to speak as a Nobel Prize winner. It is the invasion of the idiots.

Eco delivered this critique in 2015 while receiving an honorary degree at the University of Turin. His concern was not rooted in elitism, but in the loss of editorial filtering. He spent decades analyzing how truth is constructed, and he feared that a platform where every voice is amplified equally would eventually lead to the death of expertise. In his view, the democratization of opinion had accidentally dismantled the value of knowledge.

The Strait of Hormuz disruption is not just about crude. Analysts and logistics reporting say it also hits LNG, LPG, petrochemicals, methanol, plastics feedstocks and helium, which means the pain doesn’t stop at the bowser. It runs through manufacturing, freight, construction inputs, chemicals and tech supply chains as inventories thin out.

So the sequence is roughly this:

First, people panic locally.
Then wholesalers and retailers start paying up to secure supply.
Then inventories that were already on the water get delivered.
Then the pipeline starts running dry.
That is when the shock stops being a story for traders and shipping nerds and starts becoming obvious to everyone else.

Australia sits in that early wave. The map’s timing lines up with reports that parts of Asia have already been scrambling for replacement cargoes, with even unusual US Gulf Coast-to-Australia distillate routes being used to plug gaps.

And if the disruption drags on, this stops being about “higher prices” and becomes about allocation.

Who gets fuel.
Who pays more.
Which industries keep moving.
Which ones start slowing, rationing, or passing costs straight through to households.

Barclays says that the Hormuz disruption could remove 13 - 14 million barrels a day from global supply, while Kpler says cumulative losses could exceed 400 million barrels by mid-April if flows don’t normalise.

So yes, shortages so far have been partly behavioural... fear, stockpiling, domestic scrambling.
But the actual physical supply problem has yet to come.

For our part of the world, the cliff edge is very close. By mid-April, the “surely they’ll sort it out” phase gives way to the “oh, this is real” phase. Europe follows. The US later, but still not immune, especially through price rather than outright physical scarcity.

In other words... the panic buying is the opening act.
The real show starts when the ships stop arriving.

The transmission is called a “numbers station” — a Cold War-era tool that employs radio transmissions and old-school cryptology to transmit secret messages — usually to spies around the world.

The concept: Using a random series of a numbers, generated by some mechanical or electronic device or something more powerful, a person can send a coded message to another person in possession of a decoder, often called a “one-time pad.”

Anyone can listen to the transmission; shortwave transmissions travel long distances, signals bouncing off the atmosphere. But only a person with the decoder key can decipher it. The concept got a cameo in the US spy drama The Americans, set in the 1980s.

Numbers station code is “absolutely unbreakable,” said Fernandez, who more than two decades ago published a four-CD audio compendium of hundreds of recordings from around the world called the Conet Project. It’s considered the Bible for numbers-station enthusiasts.

“The number keys that are used are perfectly random. There are no mathematical operations you can use on them to brute force them,” he said. “And even if the answer gets out, say in proper English, it’s not necessarily understandable.”

“You can’t tell anything about a random set of letters or numbers by their length other than their length. The length of message is not the content of the information being transmitted,” he said. “But it is possible to infer the purpose of stations by the length that they’re online and the noise they transmit if there is no text message.”

A “very significant” unpublished story by Jack Kerouac described as “a lost chapter of the On the Road saga” has been discovered after languishing in the files of an assassinated Mafia crime boss for at least 40 years.

The two-page typewritten manuscript signed by Kerouac in green ink is titled The Holy, Beat, and Crazy Next Thing and is dated 15 April 1957, five months before his classic of beat literature, On the Road, was published.

It was discovered last year during the disposal of items owned by Paul Castellano, who ran the feared Gambino crime family in New York from 1976 until he was murdered in a hail of gunfire on 16 December 1985.

It is not known how or when Castellano acquired the Kerouac story. According to the company that bought it from his estate, Your Own Museum, it is thought to have originally been given to a San Francisco poet in the beat generation circle. The company said: “It has remained in private hands, meticulously preserved, for over six decades. It is a direct, tangible link to the moment the beat generation exploded into the American consciousness.

I have always believed that the war in Ukraine was an attempt to seperate Russia from China by destabilising the Putin regime and bringing Russia closer to the West, at least as a result of a negotiated peace if not regime change. Everyone knows the war cannot be won by either side on the battlefield as long as Ukraine has Western support. But letting Russia simply win, which it could do if the West/US withdrew, actually defeats the goal of further isolating China.

This rationale seems to be holding true according to the indicators for the current truce plan - The US was always willing to sacrifice Ukrainian lives, by making it the frontline in its proxy war. But now the US is willing to sacrifice the entire country of Ukraine in order to split Russia from China. To do this, the US needs to bypass Europe and the EU, which is exactly what it is doing now. The results will be bad for Europe, terrible for Ukraine but perfect for the USA and eventually Russia. Bad for China too.

I predict we will see a school of thought emerge from the groundwork that was done by Mark Fisher. Mark seems to be consistently drawing attention to areas of consideration more than proposing a structure for discourse (which I attribute to Deleuze). In doing this Mark Fisher uses a rhetorical system that draws from the personal and the everyday and I find it inspiring. One example of this would be from this video, with his connection of psychedelic consciousness (07:15) to experience and thought, using the Beatles as a model for culture. Mark was a cultural theorist who specialised in capitalist social relations using (among others) Deleuze-Guattari but he focuses on a different set of parameters as a translating lens. As he wrote in Terminator vs Avatar; "But it’s now necessary to reverse the Deleuze-Guattari/Libidinal Economy emphasis on politics as a means to greater libidinal intensification: rather, it’s a question of instrumentalising libido for political purposes." In such a quote I see the point and application of the ideas of Deleuze-Guattari into my own life and situation but in a pragmatic sense, rather than a mode of consciousness or philosophical base.

Jameson was the Knut Schmidt-Nielsen Professor of Comparative Literature, Professor of Romance Studies (French), and Director of the Institute for Critical Theory at Duke University. In 2012, the Modern Language Association gave Jameson its sixth Award for Lifetime Scholarly Achievement.

Jameson argued against postmodernists, asserting that these phenomena had or could have been understood successfully within a modernist framework; the postmodern failure to achieve this understanding implied an abrupt break in the dialectical refinement of thought. In his view, postmodernity's merging of all discourse into an undifferentiated whole was the result of the colonization of the cultural sphere, which had retained at least partial autonomy during the prior modernist era, by a newly organized corporate capitalism. Following Adorno and Horkheimer's analysis of the culture industry, Jameson discussed this phenomenon in his critical discussion of architecture, film, narrative, and visual arts, as well as in his strictly philosophical work.

Jameson's analysis of postmodernism attempts to view it as historically grounded; he therefore explicitly rejects any moralistic opposition to postmodernity as a cultural phenomenon, and continued to insist upon a Hegelian immanent critique that would "think the cultural evolution of late capitalism dialectically, as catastrophe and progress all together". " As a child I belonged to the generation that had to stay at the table, quiet and eat with the grown ups and I have this memory of the meals taking too long. And there, that day, there was a long discussion at the table. I think Antonin Artaud was probably feeling a bit depressed that day and they were talking, and he said that he did not know how to write anymore, he was not able to write, he did not know how to write. I had just started school and had just begun to learn how to read and write. After the meal, I timidly approached him and told him that I could help him. I said to him, Monsieur Artaud, I go to school and I am learning how to write and I am willing to show you too if you want. You see, I took literally the discussion at the table. What is wonderful is that Artaud went ahead and played the game. We got dressed, walked downhill towards Marne to go find a stationary shop. We bought a notebook, pencils, a rubber and a pencil sharpener. When we got back, we sat at the table and I instructed him how to make the "i" in the alphabet which was the easiest letter to write. I can't say how much time this took because I do not experience time today the same way I used to do when I was a child. It could have been half an hour or a quarter of an hour or a whole hour, but I have the impression that we worked and Artaud worked hard on this, filling in the pages. Antibodies, vaccine trials and the social factors determining health – what can we learn from the HIV experiences in the global south, in this time of COVID-19?
When it comes to tackling COVID-19, has the world learned anything from the global HIV epidemic?

This exploration, by South African filmmaker Rehad Desai, unpicks connections between the two pandemic experiences, from a global south perspective.

At the centre is the story of the four decades-long (and still fruitless) search for an HIV antibody vaccine, aimed at stalling transmission of a virus that still afflicts millions of people. This HIV vaccine research, and its extensive clinical trial infrastructure in South Africa, was crucial for the rapid rollout of COVID-19 vaccine trials there in 2020. Yet, while some of the world benefitted from this slipstreaming, South Africans and most developing countries dropped to the back of the queue when it came to actually being supplied with them.

The theme of inequality – between rich and poor people and nations – as well as resonant themes of blame, science denial and the critical role of dwindling public health systems, runs through both pandemic experiences.

This journey through recent health history includes insights into the evolution of pathogens and the social factors determining health. With contributions from international experts and local stakeholders, it asks us to consider how we, as a world, will face a future of more variants, new pathogens and future pandemics if we continue to put profit before people and the planet.

As Desai asks at the end of the film: Isn’t it time to get back to a world where health is a basic right and where the quest for profit does not lead us all further towards catastrophe?

This ukiyo-e woodblock print, by the late Edo period artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861), illustrates a story involving the “Sea Monk” or Umibōzu, a spirit in Japanese folklore. The ocean dwelling spirit — so called because of his smooth monk-like round head — is said to capsize the ship of anyone who dares speak to it. The specific tale illustrated in Kuniyoshi’s woodblock tells of a sailor Kawanaya Tokuzo who, despite it being considered unlucky in the world of seafaring, decides to go to sea on the last day of the year. A terrible storm breaks out, and the giant figure of the Umibōzu appears. Against the roar of the waves the apparition asks, “Name the most horrible thing you know!” Tokuzo yells in reply, “My profession is the most horrible thing I know!” The answer apparently satisfies the monster as he then disappears along with the storm.
