Ich habe nicht viel Geld. :-D

Multi-platform outputs should be the most basic thing a flake does. Yet,, the common answer was to pull in flake-utils/flake-parts: an extra input, a limited "default systems" list from a third-party repo, and pinned copies piling up in nested lock files.

Meanwhile, builtins.mapAttrs over nixpkgs.legacyPackages covers every platform nixpkgs supports — with zero inputs. Since August 2026, `nix flake init` gives you exactly this.

How it works & how to extend it:
https://nixcademy.com/posts/new-default-nix-flake-template/

#Nix [@nixos_org](https://chaos.social/@nixos_org ) #Flakes

Two years ago, the Mac was the awkward special case for Linux builds. Today, my MacBook outbuilds my Linux machines. 🤯

We just got merged a new Linux builder backend into nixpkgs that runs on Apple's Virtualization.framework and exposes Rosetta to the guest VM.

The results on Apple Silicon:

⚡ x86_64-linux builds are 2.5x faster than QEMU emulation
📦 Builder closure shrinks from 3.2 GiB to 1.2 GiB
🚀 VM boots 2x faster
🧪 Nested virtualization: NixOS integration tests with /dev/kvm now run on your Mac (M3+)

And the best part: it's a drop-in replacement. If you use nix-darwin, switching is literally two extra lines in your configuration.

Under the hood is vzvm, a purpose-built VM monitor in ~1000 lines of Swift with zero external dependencies. No bootloader, no disk image juggling, no network configuration. It does exactly what a Nix remote builder needs — and nothing else.

The fun part of the story: building x86_64 NixOS systems and deploying them remotely is now faster from my Mac than from my aarch64 Linux machines, because Rosetta beats QEMU's software emulation hands down.

Full write-up with setup instructions, benchmarks, and how it works under the hood:

https://nixcademy.com/posts/rosetta-linux-builder-macos/

#Nix #NixOS #macOS #AppleSilicon #DevOps #DeveloperExperience
[@nixos_org](https://chaos.social/@nixos_org )

The [@nixos_org](https://chaos.social/@nixos_org ) integration tests have always been a fantastic tool - We just made them even faster and much simpler to run! 🚀 By adding a new lightweight container backend to the test driver, you can now run your suites on standard, non-KVM VMs. 👇

Here is what the new container backend brings to your NixOS workflow:

⚡ Blazing Fast Execution: How fast? Booting two machines, letting them ping each other, and tearing them down now takes ~3 seconds!
💸 Run Anywhere (Cheaper!): You no longer need bare-metal KVM-enabled hosts. Your tests can now run seamlessly on cheap, standard VMs.
🎮 GPU Testing Support: Hardware acceleration is now accessible. You can finally test GPU-dependent workloads directly inside your integration tests!

Curious how it works under the hood and how to enable it in your projects? Dive into our latest article and try it out for yourself!

🔗 Read the full breakdown here: https://nixcademy.com/posts/faster-cheaper-nixos-integration-tests-with-containers/

#NixOS #DevOps #Testing #Linux #Nix #InfrastructureAsCode #CI #Containers
