we'll get more and more data over the next week and, if things go well, the next month or two, but more than that, I think what's informative is people who are normally the target of the bots: people who make progressive videos or videos pertaining to Russia's invasion of Ukraine... every single one I've heard speak on the topic of bots and trolls has noticed a precipitous decline in the number of bots and trolls directed at them, downvote rates plummeting, videos not getting instant downvotes, etc :frog_blush:

First, why should you give me the time of day? :bear_shrug: Despite being Japanese, USian, and Indigenous North-American, Eastern European geopoli is a special interest of mine :frog_blush:

So I've been watching and hearing various things about Russia's bot traffic from "down 99%" (technically true but that's mostly scrapers, not propoganda bots) to "it did nothing" (entirely untrue from various data we have from the last few days) to "people jumped at the 99% down as a way to absolve themselves and their country of supporting regressive, anti-social views" which, while true, paints a distortion of the current sitouation and how RU propognda works.

First and most importantly, RU propoganda works by taking what already exists in a society and amplifying it, not trying to create something from whole cloth. It gives people permission to be installed about holding certain views, bolstering their morale and giving movements a facade of more support than they actually have. Separatist movements that get stroked after a good example of this, and so are wedge issues (usually bigotry). It's usually done by amplifying three voices of those already holding views, by agreeing with them or giving useful idiots' voices more reach.

While we haven't seen a 99% collapse in propoganda bots, neither have we seen no effect despite some reports about the number of posts by Russian outlets. There seems to be a heavy downswing in the views and support non-Russian yet Russia-supportive media, as well as a consistent decrease in Russian bots that bother youtubers who deal with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and other topics inconvenient to the Kremlin.

From what I've been able to piece together, this makes sense: what was hit recently seems to have been infrastructure for Russia's native genAI/LLMs, which is one of the easiest ways for propoganda bots to create massive amounts of low-effort slop.

And no, Russian propaganda bots aren't responsible for all of the strife in other countries, and there will always be a third who wants to kill a second third while the last third is content to watch and do nothing (though I think the proportions are more like a quarter, a quarter, and a half), the decrease in propoganda activity we've seen so far over the last few days will mean that bugotry will get less reach, and unpopular opinions will feel more proportional to their actual support because there will be fewer bots to amplify those fringe views convenient for the Kremlin :eevee_joy:

my hometown in Japan requires trains going through multiple multi-minute-long tunnels, but in my dreams, it was one huge tunnel that felt more like the inside of Moria than at actual train tunnel :cat_giggle:

I should perhaps have figured out it was a dream when I later asked a station master if it was true that they hadn't managed to get a party into the mountain to do track inspection on the tracks inside the tunnel since it's initial construction decades ago :dracthyr_laugh: also, going towards Tōkyō, it was so steep that it required application of brakes the whole way through the tunnel lest the train speed up uncontrollably and go careening off into the unknown dark of the mountain :emolga_sweat:

the station platforms had the nice stores with yummy stuffs, though my dreams were juuust a smidge overzealous in just how many there were (there are usually only 1~2 per platform tops, not a whole bazaar's worth :leafeon_giggle: )

look, I try not to overshare, but there's something that I need people to understand so I'm writing it and my reason is "I'm a bard and a succubus, what did you expect? :bear_shrug: " (in return, I'll use capital letters and punctuation and stuff)

I and a lot of others disabled by long covid repeat the same line over and over: mask up and do what you can to prevent spread.

But... I don't think people quite get the reality of disability via long covid and me/cfs. I'm not missing a limb or a sensory organ. Physically, my body exists in its entirety. The underlying systems, though? absolutely shot. I went from being able to heavily exhert myself over 8~10h per day to not being able to stand more than 5 minutes before needing multiple hours of lay-down rest. What's more, me/cfs means over-exherting myself *decreases* my max stamina unlike a healthy mammalian body.

Simply put, this means I can't have sex. 5 minutes of exhertion could set my already shot systems back a month or more. 10+ minutes could set me back half a year. (Of course, this also means I can't do any other sorry if activity that involves anything physical and that includes talking which I get to do 1 hour of power week.)

Oh, what's that? Partner literally in bed, both of us wanting to do things? Too bad. Frustrated from not being able to have sex for over a year despite multiple chances to do so? Too bad. Want to at least give myself some relief? How many months of recovery am I willing to throw away?

No matter how pent up I get, no matter how many chances and willing partners I have, I can't do anything about it unless I'm willing to further destroy what little function I have left.

By not making and taking other precautions, that's the hell that you attempt to kick people into. On purpose.

p.s. Just to super clarify, there is no way for me to efficiency my way out of this reality. I could be an absolute pillow princess and do 0% of the work and that would still cause my body damage after 5 minutes, probably sooner.

While I don't believe magic exists in our world, I get why many magic systems are based on words, whether that be incantations, curses, true names, or whatever else...

Being visibly trans (and more broadly, queer) is dangerous. I don't mean "you'll get nasty messages", I mean you risk getting doxxed, or mobbed and cut off from communities which are our very lifeline (in every sense of the word), or having random fuckos fantasizing about bashing your head in with a baseball bat, shooting you up with an ak-47, or sending credible threats of violence (all examples I've personally seen from "pillars" of certain communities of marginalised people here in fedi :cat_facepalm: )

Part of this is the insideous, incessant idea that having a 2D profile pic (pfp) means you're a bigot or even a Nazi.

Being able to use a real face as a pfp (and, relatedly, real names) on an account is a privilege. There is the potential harm from others mentioned earlier, but there is also the fact that we trans people often are unable to even look in a mirror without severe distress, and having our faces on a pfp can be even worse :not_like_this:

Judging people who have a 2D avatar (almost always called an "anime" avatar by these types even though most 2D pfps aren't from anime) as a bigot without ever knowing them is a direct form of anti-trans discrimination (and anti-queer discrimination). This vomes up fairly often on fedi, and if you'd like to do an allyship, you can not only dismantle this idea in your ownind, but also speak up for us when ignorant people trot this idea out for the umpteenth time that year :hug_love:

Oh, I forgot to mention this tangent: trans-fems get the most visibility out of trans people generally, which doesn't mean we get more power; it means we have the brightest targets on our back, that we have one less layer of defense (see the defense onion), that we get the most scrutiny. Visibility isn't a boon, it's a curse for us. Trans-fems you see that are highly visible on purpose are doing so despite the risks and detriments that come eith it in the hope that it might help those who have yet to hatch, but demanding use of that visibility from us is demanding we take more risks :frog_sus:

I've seen people here and there talk about receiving massive amounts of harassment on Fedi for being some marginalised group, whether that's queerness, gender, race, or something else, often leading to them leaving. The most recent one was from a woman with multiple times my followers, but I've also seen the sentiment from people with a fraction of mine :cat_think:

While I don't go into their replies saying this because it'd be rude as hell, I just don't seem to get harassed. Replies I get to my posts seem genuine, ernest, understanding, and thoughtful, and I can count the nasty DMs I've gotten over my 3+ years on fedi on one hand (with fingers left over for a mug of cocoa). Nastiness that finds me tends to be individuals I'm asking to not whitewash poc or to use CWs to not retraumatise marginalised folks, but that's at most once every month or two. I'm part of 5ish marginalised identities yet seem to get less harassment than a bunch of people with only 1, and it's got me thinking a bit :frog_think:

Cutie.city is a fairly lax instance when it comes to blocks, so either our mayor does some seriously pinpoint precision work combined with future sight or that's probably not the main cause of not getting harassment. It could be that those people with 1 marginalised identity are more marginalised than my 5 combined, but irl, at least, one of mine can't even use bathrooms in government buildings, and I share some identities with people I've seen speak about being harassed so that's probably no it either :bear_shrug: I've had multiple posts hit 3 digit boosts, and it's not like I make don't make tons of posts that have room for reply guys :neofox_think_hmm:

Thinking about it, the conclusion I come to is that all of you who follow me are to thank for my experience on Fedi. Not only do you yourselves engage with me in ways that make my time enjoyable, the circle of connections you have also seem to be relatively safe for my posts to be boosted into :frog_blush:

Thank you all for that because it's made me fall in love and stay in love with Fedi for over 3 years now, through multiple instance migrations and through various difficulties (both on and offline), and made me feel like this is home for me in a chaotic world where home is hard to find :hug_love: Please continue being kind to me and to each other~ :catgirl_lurk:

Hey Fedi, I know there are a good lot of you want actionable ways to fight fascism. You know how one of the strategies that fascists use is to overwhelm people and make them freeze up, unable to fight back? :shiba_confused:

I know many of you might not be used to this because it doesn't really exist on major social media platforms, but we have a thing here called a content warning (CW) that collapsed a post with little custom tags on it. Think of it as consent. Instead of forcibly pouring Scottish breakfast tea down a stranger's throat, you can ask them if they want it and warm them it's a smidge hot to chug :frog_blush:

This is especially appreciated by those of us that are marginalised because we have to deal with trauma, horrid news, and the like on a nearly daily basis as it is, and CWs allow us to decide whether we have enough energy and emotional capacity at that moment to deal with more of it which can literally save some of our days. (To use myself as an example, I'm mostly bedridden and spare emotional energy can decide whether I'm able to physically take care of myself that day or not.)

It's a small thing, and it may feel awkward or uncomfortable at first, but I promise once you get used to them, other social media sites will feel like needless barrages on your sanity and you'll feel oddly naked trying to make posts then realising they don't have that feature :leafeon_giggle:

I've been on the decline physically due to long covid for a couple years now, but I've recently gotten to a point where I need to fundamentally rethink how I get my nutrients due to being mostly bedridden. I'm hoping people here might be able to help me build a list of foods and meals I can acquire, prep, and eat in my current condition :frog_blush:

For those who aren't familiar with the lore, this book essentially details the events at the end of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall from the perspective of various Blades agents who were in the area and experienced it. While magic exists in the world of The Elder Scrolls, events like The Warp In The West take incomprehensible amounts of it and are a truly rare sort of phenomenon :frog_blush:

These accounts of the event were only accessible to very few, and only because of the existence of The Blades, a security and information organisation that answers to the emperor. Meanwhile, most people were either not privy to the details of the event or simply call it an act of the divines.
