I've been a life-long news hound. At one point in my life I subscribed to three different newspapers, and watched the evening news on Canada's national broadcast station.

I was shocked to the core in 2023 when I realized that mainstream news was whitewashing if not completely ignoring Israel's genocide. As a result I no longer subscribe to any mainstream news org. I no longer trust anything they say about any news item, be it international, national or local.

I was blind to how fully the corporate press upholds power and the status quo, but no more.

On Sept. 26th 1983, he watched in disbelief as the monitoring software showed that the US had launched 5 nuclear missiles. Why would America send 5 missiles when they had thousands? It didn’t add up.

Petrov stayed calm. His job was to suggest retaliation, but he chose not to, and did nothing. He was proved 100% right – it had been a false alarm.

At the deepest point of the cave Tiberius placed a massive marble sculpture that showed the moment when Odysseus blinds the Cyclops, Polyphemus, a one-eyed man-eating giant.

In 26 AD, while Tiberius was dining there, rocks fell from the roof of the grotto, crushing several of his attendants and nearly killing the emperor. In that collapse, the great marble figures were smashed, and there they lay, at the bottom of the cave, until 1957, when workers building a coastal road cut into the ground and found them.

Slowly, piece by piece, the scene was meticulously put back together, and the sculptures now reside at the Sperlonga Archaeological Museum.

Turning off the first setting isn't enough. Most people stop there.

On the same settings page: Google Workspace smart features → Manage Workspace smart feature settings → Turn off both checkboxes → Save.

The scale of the fires in France is hard to absorb. More than 220,000 people have been evacuated from Gironde alone, one of the largest evacuations in modern French history. Around 2,500 firefighters, 1,500 soldiers and 1,200 police are deployed, 88 firefighters have been injured, and 240 homes are gone.

At its closest, the fire came within 15 km of Bordeaux. Four firefighters have died across France in just over two weeks.

As of today the main front is stable, with military engineers cutting firebreaks alongside crews. But that may not hold. Temperatures close to 42 C are forecast for later this week, and officials warn the fires could burn for months.
