if anyone ever wants to install #NetBSD on a 486-class machine that doesn't have PCI, or does but has video on ISA, and you run into issues because it panics on boot:

i can help!

the long and short of it is that you need a boot image built with the LEGACY kernel instead of the GENERIC config. which i can point you to on demand

if you are a new #NetBSD user here is a good way to think about what to expect on NetBSD:

NetBSD 11.0 runs about equally as well on my Sega Dreamcast or a 30 year old Pentium II PC as it does on any modern computer that i have. *this goes both ways*.

to know whether your modern gaming pc will be able to do something, you should first ask yourself: "could i do this on a Sega Dreamcast or a 30 year old Pentium II PC?". if the answer is yes, you will probably succeed! if the answer is no, it still might be possible, but here be daemons.

for example:

- can i ssh into it and edit files and compile little programs?
yes! absolutely! definitely.
- can i run a webserver?
indeed you can.
- can i install Steam?
hahahahaha no.
- can i run X11?
yep! may need to do some tweaking depending on your hardware though.
- can i run KDE plasma?
outlook not so good.

Carmack in my estimation is great at algorithms and rather bad at actual coding. Abrash does not get enough credit imo.

- conflation of the FXCH pipeline optimizations that specifically benefit the Pentium's microarchitecture, with the more general trick interleaving of fpu/integer operations that benefits *all* x86-architecture CPUs (even theoretically back to the 8088+8087 if you managed to port Quake to it; *maybe* not some very specific Cyrix clones), and would theoretically benefit some non-x86 architectures if equivalently done in either the C code (which would be *nasty*) or if those architectures had hand-optimized assembly

- explanations about the BSP frequently fail to mention or explain the PVS, which seems like a very large detail to leave out

i'm probably going to be told tomorrow that i'm being laid off, so if anyone has a lead on a decent remote embedded software engineering or unix/linux systems job, i've got a resume to send you.

i don't like discussing the specifics of who my past clients have been in public. however, my most recent position was contracting with the kernel team of a major CDN and cloud services provider that i know many people on fedi are also current or former employees of, maintaining their internal linux distribution (an customized Ubuntu downstream) for their custom server platforms, porting forward and cleaning up patchsets to newer versions of the distribution, fixing issues in toolchains and libraries, etc.

i've also done embedded software work for a large variety of devices including medical, cellular technology, and industrial control equipment, in addition to some consumer products. i've done board bringup and BSP development with Yocto/Openembedded, Buildroot, FreeRTOS, etc, on most major SoC and microcontroller families. when doing business logic, I am most comfortable in C and Lua, but fine working with C++ codebases, and can learn to work with other languages if a project needs it.

boosts appreciated.

a word to those who think that the use of generative AI is necessary to compete against the larger players in whatever creative industry you may be thinking of:

the reason you can't compete with them is because *they are not competing*.

they have chosen to opt out of the competition, and in place of their creative work, instead present the statistical mode. anything they win out of this was never anything more than a participation in the first place, and is worthless.
