I just saw a disturbing comment that AI meant someone was never going to release another software project.

I think it might be good to look at the BSD perspective on releasing free software. Permissive licensing means you don't really care what someone does with your code, aside from claiming copyright themselves. While this is indeed a problem with Grand Theft Autocomplete, it's a legal problem and the criminals aren't getting their way without a fight.

I'm going to keep sharing what I do. No one can take my pleasure in creating systems away from me. I saw a meme not long ago - someone created a robot to eat ice cream for them so they didn't have to.

Just because other people are deploying ice cream eating robots, we don't have to stop eating ice cream ourselves.

Here's a good reason to not give up on the Debian community. This kind of facility, if it came ot pass, would allow people who disagree with the outcome of the GR to deploy Debian systems without compromising their ethical stance against slop:

I was going to say "at least cigarette smokers never used to argue that cigarettes were a useful tool" but then I remembered hearing "I need to smoke this to calm my nerves" which is close enough.

Slop addicts are smokers, they talk about smokers' rights, and the costs and consequences are meaningless to them even as they harm themselves and everyone around them.

But there's hope. "Cigarettes are here to stay" but most people look at them and the people that smoke them with disgust, they're not allowed a great many places, and it's illegal to advertise them.

Asbestos and lead paint were here to stay too. Cryptocurrencies are here to stay. NFTs are here to stay. The fascists are here to stay. Capitalism is here to stay.

All these things are here to stay, just like cigarettes and leaded gasoline.

I saw a terrible message from DigitalOcean yesterday. I was helping a co-worker learn to do SASL authentication with Postfix, using Dovecot to do the heavy lifting, (second co-worker this week! Breaking people free from Google!) and we got to the point where we were ready to have him send out a test email - a reply to an email I'd just sent him that exercised all the moving parts of his inbound path.

But when he tried to send, he couldn't talk to my email server. I checked to make sure he wasn't being firewalled, but he didn't show up in my abuse listing. But then on poking around, it became clear he couldn't talk to ANY port 25 ANYWHERE. And I thought, "Oh, right, they've got that blocked. Le'ts find an article talking about how to unblock it." Not too uncommon. So I looked for their docs on unblocking 25.

Turns out, there's no automated way - not even a support ticket type for the purpose. You have to open a general request.

But man, they REALLY don't want you opening a general request! This is a masterpiece of Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt:

Without meaning to, they've eloquently captured the essence of everything we're seeing with the destructive corporatization and centralization of online services. They say:

"In many ways, mail server stacks represent a collision between the tools and values of the early internet — self-hosting open source software using well-defined standards and interoperable protocols — and the reality of the modern internet — a few centralized, trusted authorities."

This, not to put too fine a point on it, is BAD FOR US.

We need *more* selfhosting. I was a customer of theirs for a few years, but I stopped after they had some catastrophe that prevented me from accessing my server console for more than a week. Their support was underwater and I didn't get any movement until I decided to publically name and shame them with details of the incident.

This kind of attitude should make anyone hesitant to sign up for services with DigitalOcean.

Hey, I'm stretching the thread here, but is there a guide for setting up the moving parts of the server that isn't slanted towards Debian? I'm assuming the tools are the tools but that maybe the set-up assumes Debian pathing or something that would make it non-viable on a BSD or other Linux.

I haven't ripped into the script yet to see for myself, but it seems good to ask first in case the docs are already there somewhere.

I can just do a dedicated Postfix or something, but it seems worth running the bespoke server. I just want to run it on FreeBSD.

I kind of cheated this time and wrote this up in advance, presuming that R will win based on the current poll stats. (If you're reading this, it was the right bet.) At some point I'll do a video showing how I'm organizing this stuff, using basic shell tools and vi to get a letter frequency distribution from my chosen quote and to come up with a chart of letters missing and present in the quote text. It's kind of fun. Figuring out the hints is harder - I look for letters that would be good to include, and see if the group lends itself to a theme. Last game, one of the themes was worlds that had seen disaster. This time we've got homeworlds. And not just homeworlds, but homeworlds that start with vowels!

Welcome to the sixth poll of this #hangtrek, the #StarTrek-themed word game. The fifth poll was a dead heat between E and I until the very end, when E eked out a narrow victory. It's going to have to form a coalition government, as a 50% win is no strong mandate!

We've gone through 20 letters now, so I'm going to start mixing back in letters that have already come up but not selected.
