I've written proposals with them, it's extremely straightforward, if I didn't speak english I'd just use google translate.

Then I think on the other side they're really more reserving the right to defund you if you submit slop. Because I'm sure a lot of people have submitted some really awful trash. We can all agree that really really good vibe-coders like Lain should probably get a pass here, but (I imagine) he is very much the exception.

Interesting take. Grok has been otherwise very Christian.

However, if you want to reason about whether "you're going to heaven or hell", there's a pretty decent argument against...

1. An newborn baby has no knowledge of words, language, good and eval, or even cause and effect.

2. A person who is dying of a brain degeneration slowly loses all of these things, their comprehension of language, memory of what they did, ability to understand good and evil, and eventually even their ability to breath.

3. Therefore, if the baby dies in childbirth, or when the person with brain degeneration dies of their disease, we can reasonably assume that any part of them which "moves on" will not speak English with Saint Peter because their English language capacity is either gone, or never existed. And in the case of the person with brain degeneration, we can assume they'll have no memory of their sins, and no way to understand why they're in heaven or hell...

      Hmm...

Lots of bankruptcies -> Yeah like everything in nuclear. Regulatory bullshit.

Scaling it down means more shielding -> Okay, fair point, but what if the factory doesn't make the shielding, and instead you buy 20 or 30 cores and put them all together and pour the concrete around them all?

One she didn't mention: Neutron economics gets fussy at small scale. But the question is whether it's fussy enough that you really need to use an inferior reactor to make it work, or is it just fussy enough that you need to be more clever about your design?

I have a hard time believing SMRs are really doomed, but I could easily see a world where (large) nuclear plants are assembled like legos.

Right, if it was "just" inflation, then everybody would "just" use hundred dollar bills instead of 10 dollar bills and nothing else would change that much.

The real crime of inflation is all of the other stuff that is intended to suppress wages and prices.

Okay it's time for the Sunday Energy Post!

For people who are new here, we're talking about storing energy. Solar panels are very cheap so there's no reason not to install enough to provide power throughout the year. But solar energy is so asymmetrical that if you have enough panels for "some" power in dark winter months, you're making a SHITLOAD of power in the summer. These Sunday posts are about how to store that energy.

After a broad review of the available technologies, I have become convinced that Ammonia is the most realistic. Batteries will always have a place in temporary storage, given their fantastic efficiency and simplicity of operation, but the price of batteries is too high and for seasonal storage, so ammonia - despite lower efficiency and more hassle - is ideal for filling he gap.

Ammonia has the chemical formula NH3 so all of its components can be gotten directly from air and water. You don't need to truck in a carbon source like coal - and then deal with mineral impurities and so on.

Ammonia is a gas like propane, and it has about half the energy-per-liter. It can be used in an internal combustion engine, or in a fuel cell. It should not be used in a stove as it is toxic and very smelly.

The whole challenge with ammonia is in making it. The classical method requires heat and pressure (the two devils). To wit, 350C (600F) and 300bar (4000psi). This is done in large ammonia plants which have extensive heat recuperation equipment so that they themselves are quite efficient. However, in whole they are inefficient because reactants must be transported to the plant and ammonia must be transported away to the customer. The reaction vessel for making ammonia looks like [fig 1].

I know of two promising technologies for scaling ammonia production down, one is to use a piston to make heat and pressure, and the other is electrochemical to avoid heat and pressure altogether.

The piston idea is basically that (like in a diesel engine or diesel fire piston [fig 2]) you can get a lot of heat and pressure, temporarily, just by compressing a volume of gas with a piston. Moreover, the majority of that heat and pressure energy is given back to you as the piston returns, saving you the need for a large, high pressure, high temperature heat exchanger.

The piston idea was patented in https://patents.google.com/patent/US4816121A/en and https://patents.google.com/patent/US10399860B2/en (both of which are now expired). However, there is essentially nothing written on whether this Actually Works.

The key question is whether the reaction can be made to happen fast enough that a useful amount of H2+N2 is reacted in each stroke of the "engine".

---

The other promising direction is electrolytic. The topic of "Green Ammonia" is HOT HOT HOT. There are papers, chemistries, startups, and patents popping up like mushrooms all over. Apparently a lot of people have reached the same conclusion that I have.

The real challenge is breaking N2 into single atomic nitrogen because the N2 triple bond is pretty strong (hence nitrogen being considered "inert").

A chemistry that I find quite compelling is Lithium Nitride based [fig 3]. The challenges are:
1. Getting the metallic lithium exposed to nitrogen (gas) to make Li3N (Lithium Nitride)
2. Driving electrolytic hydrogen to the Li3N to release NH3 (ammonia) and return Li+ to plate off as metallic lithium
3. Avoiding the hydrogen ions turning the lithium into LiH (Lithium Hydride) which will then not interact with nitrogen
4. Preventing the metallic lithium from reacting with the electrolyte, which has the job of carrying H+ ions to the Li3N - lithium is insanely reactive and it wants to fuck up everything it touches - which is why it works on nitrogen...
5. Preventing absolutely any water or oxygen from sneaking into the cell, because these will react with the lithium and make LiOH and other trash that is insanely hard to return to useful metallic lithium.

1 is tricky because you want the lithium to touch gasious nitrogen so it becomes Li3N, but also to touch electrolyte so it can be converted back. I think the best idea is to have a cell with liquid level cycling up and down - like breathing.

Choice of electrolyte is another challenge, it needs to transport hydrogen, but it also needs to avoid interacting with lithium. A popular electrolyte is ethanol, but ethanol converts lithium into lithium ethoxide and hydrogen gas. This is mitigated by the fact that it creates an SEI (solid-electrolyte-interface) which stops further degradation. But I'm not that favorable to the SEI because nitrogen needs to also pierce through it. This is not a lithium ion battery.

My favorite electrolyte is actually ammonia itself. Yes, it means the cell must run under some pressure (11bar / 150psi or so), but it reduces the number of unique chemicals in the cell, and it means there's no separation of gasses needed. The only gas is nitrogen, and the product ammonia becomes part of the electrolyte. The interaction risk with ammonia is the same as with hydrogen, it can hydrogenate the lithium - so problems 3 and 4 become the same problem.

Problem number 5 is two-fold, firstly it requires very good nitrogen cleaning because you're pulling N2 out of the air and you don't want any H2O, O2, or other stuff coming along with it. Getting N2 contaminants down to low-PPM numbers is a more-or-less solved problem. The bigger problem is from the hydrogen side. If you want to generate ammonia *efficiently*, you want to combine it with water electrolysis, because the lithium hydride will assist in pulling the H+ ions across, reducing the energy input. So what you do is put water on one side of the cell, ammonia on the other, and a membrane between them. But the membrane must be nearly perfect at excluding H2O while carrying H+. Ion exchange membranes are commonplace, but they typically need to be "wet" in order to work, and they generally leak at least a little bit of water across. There are also ceramic ion carriers, but they need to be hot in order to work. Finding an H+ carrying membrane carrier that will be very good at not passing water is an important part of building a good electrolytic ammonia cell.

Sunday Energy Post coming soon, but in the mean time, a mini-post related to energy:

As nuclear fusion seems to finally be coming close to reality, it's becoming more and more apparent this whole thing is bit of a Booby Prize.

Fusion was originally touted as the key to Infinite Clean Energy, but all of it's supposed advantages have qualifications that make it really not that good at all.

1. "Fusion is done with abundant hydrogen" - No, it's done with deuterium and tritium, which are isotopes of hydrogen and are actually pretty rare. Deuterium isn't rare enough to be a real supply constraint, but tritium is. Ironically the best way to make tritium is in a (classical) fission reactor...

2. "Fusion doesn't make nuclear waste" - Hahaha, maybe not in the fundamental reaction itself, but what do you suppose happens when that neutron flies off and slams into part of the reactor? A lot of what's generally called "radioactive waste" is not actually spent fuel, but rather normal things that have been exposed to enough radiation that they are now considered radioactive.

3. "Fusion will be easier" - Noooooo. In a classical nuclear plant, you bring fuel close to other fuel and they spontaneously begin exchanging neutrons and doing fission. In a fusion reactor, you use electricity to make plasma and then you heat and confine it to temperatures and pressures that are unseen on earth outside of a nuclear bomb, and only THEN does fusion begin to occur.

So the conclusion is that while fusion is an interesting thing to be able to do, trying to extract energy from it is really kind of a pointless exercise. And table-top fusion has been possible since the 1960s when Philo Farnsworth (the farm boy who invented the CRT television tube) figured out how to do it in a (near) vacuum.

There are youtubers who build and run Farnsworth Fusors and are able to get meaningful amounts of neutron radiation off of them.

But I would argue that if half the effort that has gone into self-sustaining fusion had instead gone into molten salt reactors, we would have actually gotten the more-or-less infinite energy that we were promised.

Not taking them because they're too new and lots of new stuff turned out to be bad news is smart.

But then if you're not taking them and your neighbor is, and they're losing a bunch of weight and you're not, well you feel like a loser.

So classic human psychology, become invested in there being some bad side to them, and then end up kind of "hoping" for it...

Very realistic progression, nothing that esoteric.

Yes and no. I agree that he's definitely selling these to "upper middle" strivers. Like basically an expensive Mustang - that's the one with no thrusters.

But he's also selling to like oligarch founder types (and Jay Leno) that just do not care what the number is and want one of The Fastest Car On The Road. And that's the "price not disclosed" invite only car...

Legacy brand shit is another can of worms, indeed. But you can't compete with Rolls Royce unless you are literally Rolls Royce, so he's being smart by not trying.

I think when these things start coming out, the thrusters are going to create quite a lot of drama in the no-prep / cash days / grudge racing scene, because basically anyone can have a 2500hp LS, and the entire problem at this point is getting that to the track. Well, one guy has thrusters and the other guy doesn't, might as well have come with a bicycle.

Then the sucker fan, I think that's going to make a lot of noice in places like the Nurburgring because when you have that kind of down-force, you can do corners a lot faster... There's a reason F1 banned sucker-fans...

I'd be very curious how that corresponds to 8th and quarter mile times. It looks like it's 1000hp of electric motors, plus thrust. And fans making cheater-downforce...

My wild guess is that it probably ranks with top fuelers on the 8th mile, and on the quarter it's probably a respectable streetcar.

After reviewing many different forms of energy storage, I think the one that is most likely to catch on will be lithium based ammonia electrolysis such as https://jupiterionics.com/our-technology/

Sure the lithium is prone to degradation over time, but if it has a similar lifecycle to a lithium battery then you figure 5000 cycles of 1kWh battery equals about 5MWh of ammonia production. And a 1kWh lithium battery is less than $100.

Ammonia is NH3 so all of its components come from air and water. You don't need to buy coal in order to produce it. Energy density is 4 kWh per kg which is a little under half that of gasoline, but better than any battery. Furthermore, you can burn it in an internal combustion engine, OR, in a fuel cell, so it has a lot of flexibility.

Ammonia is also used for nitrogen fertilizer, so it has significant industrial application outside of fuel. So even if ammonia production is significantly more expensive than other energy carriers like methanol or gasoline, there's still an important reason to make it anyway. An early use case is huge because it will drive economy of scale to push down the price.

Ammonia is a gas (not a liquid) which is a mixed story. On the one hand, it's a little bit harder to handle than liquid fuels like gasoline and diesel, but it compresses at a pressure similar to propane gas so it's not a "difficult" gas like hydrogen. And its gaseous nature can be seen as an advantage because leaks and spills - while bad and toxic - are not long term environmental disasters the way diesel spills are.

The Hard Problem for ammonia electrolysis is designing a cell which lasts long enough to be economical. Lithium metal is desperate to attach itself to anything it can find, particularly oxygen or water, and this is not easily reversible so it turns the cell to junk.

The runners up (IMO) are:

1. Sodium metal. Sodium is obviously extremely abundant and it is fairly easy to convert it from hydroxide to metallic form. Energy density is around 2 kWh per kg, and sodium is almost exactly 1kg per liter. Sodium can be used in a sodium-air fuel cell which (in current research) is about 50% efficient. Sodium is a lot less flexible than ammonia, and the energy-to-weight is worse, but there are no Hard Problems that need to be solved here - so we might see sodium show up in some grid energy storage projects.

2. Liquid hydrogen (if we can improve cryogenic cooling technology). At 33kWh per kg, LH2 has a much better energy to weight, but even in liquid form it is still bulky with only 2.3 kWh per liter, compared to ammonia's 3.53 kWh/liter. As it needs to be stored in very special vacuum insulated dewars, bulk is an issue. Liquid hydrogen is particularly interesting for the aviation industry because it's power to weight is undefeated, and planes have very predictable fuel consumption over time. The Hard Problem for LH2 is the cooling technology.

I excluded anything that requires special geography such as compressed H2 in a salt cave - because you need the salt cave. And because it only works when you have the geography, most people can't deploy it, which means little R&D energy will go into it and therefore it's unlikely to go anywhere.

RT: https://pkteerium.xyz/objects/17fd8e81-3332-49a2-84ed-d9b846bdc7b4

Well, Sunday is here and it's time for another energy post.

The premise is always the same:
Solar panels are extremely cheap for the power. Even if you live somewhere windy or with a river, there's often nothing out there that's cheaper per kWh per year. However, solar is pretty seasonal, if you install enough solar that you will *almost* never need grid or generator power - which BTW is pretty cheap to do - you will end up with SO MUCH over-generation in sunny summer months that you will want to find something to do with the extra energy. Ideally store it for dark winter months.

I don't really have anything new today, but I have a correction to my battery post I made last week. When I was mathing out the power generation, I forgot that these batteries make hydrogen.

Not just incidental hydrogen, but hydrogen as a fundamental part of the battery reaction.

This reaction LOOKS balanced:

FeCl₂ + 2NaOH → Fe(OH)₂ + 2NaCl

But the structure of the cell shows you that it is not:

+| Fe(OH)₂ |CEM| FeCl₂ |AEM| NaCl |CEM| NaOH |-

The CEMs are cation exchange membranes which allow + ions (Fe+ and Na+) to pass, the AEMs are anion exchange membrane which allows - ions (Cl-) to pass. The flow is as follows:

Charging:  +| Fe(OH)₂ |Fe+->| FeCl₂ |<-Cl-| NaCl |Na+->| NaOH |-
Discharging:  +| Fe(OH)₂ |<-Fe+| FeCl₂ |Cl- ->| NaCl |<-Na+| NaOH |-

The CEMs are cation exchange membranes, the lefthand one allows passage of Fe+ only while the righthand one allows passage of Na+ only.

The problem should not be pretty clear, when discharging, you make Fe(OH)₂ in the left-most sub-cell and you consume NaOH in the right-most sub-cell. When charging it is the opposite. Even though the total OH doesn't change, you're still making and destroying it in different places. So this cell will make hydrogen gas while charging and while discharging.

And unfortunately, the cost of splitting H₂O is high enough that energy input is needed during both charge and "discharge" phases, it's just that 1/3 less energy is needed in discharge (for the same H2 output).

---

Likewise, the NaCl -> HCl + NaOH cell suffers the same problem. In order to make HCl, you need to pry an H+ off of a water molecule, creating O₂ as the remaining H₂O shuffles the remaining hydrogens and oxygens.

And on the other side, making NaOH requires prying an OH off of an H₂O making an H₂ from each pair of H₂O. This again ruins the energy storage of the battery and reduces it to a H₂ cell with "high consumption mode" and "low consumption mode".

---

There are three potential solutions to this problem:
1. Actually use the water-split reaction for the energy storage - this is attractive because there's a lot of energy wrapped up in a liter of water. Unfortunately unless we find a hydrogen carrier, we end up back at the H2 storage problem that has been discussed ad nausium.

2. Try to make a battery that emits hydrogen as its discharge mechanism. If you make HCL and then pour it in solid iron, you get H2 and FeCl2, which can then be made into more HCl and solid iron later. So when you charge, you store HCl and solid iron, and when you discharge you store FeCl2. This is potentially an interesting way to "store" hydrogen.

3. Eliminate the H+ and OH- component from the battery.

A nice example of #3 is the classical iron chloride flow battery:

Fe(solid) + 2FeCl₃ -> 3FeCl₂

In the charged state, you have FeCl₃ + iron solid, and discharging is pulling iron off of the solid iron into FeCl₂ and pulling the chloride out of FeCl₃. This battery has about 76 watt-hours per liter of electrolyte, so a cubic meter gives you 76 kWh. FeCl₃ is fairly acidic, and if you don't keep it acidic you start to get Fe(OH)₃ evolution and lose your chlorine to the air. However, in realistic applications, it will be about equivalent to 0.5% HCl, less concentrated than the acid found in typical lead-acid car batteries. So much more practical than carrying around 33% HCl.

RT: https://pkteerium.xyz/objects/e1e4cfe1-3328-40c4-ad83-38c635ec66d0

During WW2, Stalin devised an absolutely masterful strategy. He did nothing to stop the advance of the Germans into Russian territory, causing them to reach almost to Moscow before the panicked Americans were forced to come in and airdrop billions of dollars of aid and technology transfer - lest Hitler takeover Russia and then be able to rule the world.

I think the Europeans are aiming to play the exact same gambit. To act like total buffoons and make no effort whatsoever to halt the advancement of Russia into Europe such that America (or more likely, China) will be forced to intervene lest Russia gain control of Europe and become a world hegemony.

That change to the instruction set makes it possible to design some very aggressive optimizations in the hardware.

Right now you've got two kinds of hardware, CPUs and GPUs. A GPU can do like 10x the computation of a CPU, but it can't execute a whole lot of code. You need to say like "multiply these million numbers by those million numbers" and the GPU will shine...

A CPU can execute quite a bit of code quite quickly, but that all requires a whole lot of circuitry.

What I'm thinking is you build a single physical core of this architecture and it can have something like 128 belts, so you have 128 threads resident at any given time. But then you can also allocate some DRAM to enable 2048 belts that you can quickly swap in.

So then because your 128 belts are all asynchronous, you can basically package up computation requests and send them downstream as it they were network packets. And downstream you can put a GPU style "army of computation circuits" because now you have a nice convenient flow of computation requests for them to process.

So what you end up with is something like a wildly powerful CPU...

I think what probably happened here is Elon wanted a maximally truth-seeking AI. Meaning essentially he wanted the AI to not engage in intentional self-dilution and woke mental gymnastics. Perhaps he worries that this stuff can lead to paperclip maximizers and other deadly nonsense.

But the word "truth" has different meanings, and if you tell somebody that their goal is to "Find Truth", and then you turn them loose on the past 10,000 years of western literature, it is actually not at all unrealistic to imagine them converging on Christianity...

      Nobody Understands Leyden Jars.

A leyden jar, for those who have never seen one, is a rudimentary capacitor made from a jar and some metal foil. In the early days of electricity research, they were commonly used for storing static electricity.

In the famous Ben Franklin kite experiment, he was said to have stored the static collected from the air to a leyden jar.

Normally, they're pretty simple devices, they have 2 conductive plates (foil) separated by an insulator (glass), that's your classical capacitor. What makes absolutely no sense is the fact that when you fill one with water, it's capacity for storing energy increases *dramatically*.

Based on typical electrical understanding, this is a total mystery. The water is not completing a circuit that goes anywhere, it's not even acting as an electrode because (as you can see in diagram 2) there is foil between the water and the glass. The water seems to be connected to a dead-end of the circuit.

The reason why water affects the leyden jar is because electric fields cause water to polarize (fig 4). All of the hydrogens begin pointing one way, and all of the oxygens begin pointing the other. The water doesn't "want" to do this, entropy drives it toward random alignment. Polarization actually causes a small amount of heat to be expelled from the water, and relaxation (discharging the jar) causes a small amount of heat to be absorbed as the atoms go back to bouncing around at random, this is called electrocaloric effect.

This is one thing, and it explains why water has such an effect on leyden jars, but when there's an electrolyte like salt in the water, things get even more interesting.

Common table salt is NaCl (sodium chloride). Dissolved in water, we're told, the Na+ and Cl- disassociate. Though they're no longer chemically bonded, they have opposite charges so they don't move far apart from each other. In classical electrolysis, you apply electricity across two plates, pulling the Na+ in one direction and the Cl- in the other. Then electrons split H2O into H2 and OH-. Were it not for the Na+, the entire reaction would stop before you noticed anything, but because Na+ is happy to sit next to OH-, Cl- is free to walk across the cell to the other side, where electricity does one of two things: Either evolve Cl2 (chlorine gas) or else O2.

Now this little detour into electrolysis is important because the first step in this process is actually happening in a leyden jar. If you have a salt water leyden jar, and you charge the outer plate negative (water is positive), the Na+ is drawn toward the outer edge of the jar while the center of the jar becomes Cl- rich. If you charge the jar and then draw water from the center, you will get Cl- rich water. If you then discard the remaining water and put back the Cl- rich water and charge it again, you will get even richer water.

You can easily imagine a cascade of this construct making arbitrarily strong NaOH (sodium hydroxide) and HCL (hydrochloric acid) simply by doing the same bias over and over again. Indeed a 2020 paper ( https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0011916419312937 ) showed that exactly this trick can be used for desalination of sea water - because as the NaOH and HCL become more concentrated, the intermediate water obviously becomes less salty.

But what's really interesting is that this isn't constrained to Na+Cl- ions, ALL ions in water would be drawn out by this cascading construct (including fluoride), so it could be used as an alternative to reverse osmosis filtration.

But even fresh distilled, deionized water has ions. These are "intrinsic" ions of H3O+ and OH- which spontaneously emerge. The reason why these ions are insufficient for electrolysis is because there aren't enough of them, and while electrolysis does make more of them. 2H2O + 2e- -> H2 + 2OH- and 6H2O -> 3O2 + 4H3O+ + 4e- produces OH- and H3O+ respectively, but they tend to walk across the water and cancel each other out, bringing us back to our problem of ion poverty.

However, if we were to concentrate the intrinsic ions, we would have H3O+ rich water, and OH- rich water. These would both make very good electrolytes if we wanted to make hydrogen from water later on.

All this from lyden jars - which nobody understands.

This is a really interesting idea: https://studylib.net/doc/18477369/journal-of-microelectromechanical-systems--vol.-10

I wouldn't do exactly what they're doing, but I'd do something close: Namely you take a thin sheet of steel, and you coat it with photoresist, then shoot it with a low resolution (simple, cheap, home made) photolithography device.

Then you wash off the photoresist to get your pattern, then you put it in an electroplating bath and start adding metal. Metal can only be added to metal, it can't be added where the metal is covered by photoresist.

Moreover, once the height of the plating is higher than the photoresist, it will start to close over the top and bridge. So if you make your channels very narrow, you might close over in less than 1mm of material added.

Electroplating is not that slow, you can probably add 1mm in 24 hours.

Once the process is over, you probably use heat to melt the photoresist and then pressure to drive it out of the channels. Then you can wash the channels with solvent to get whatever photoresist may remain.

Good way to make micro-channel heat exchangers, or anything else that requires liquids to flow through lots of very small pathways.

      *sigh*

Just invented a variable pitch propeller hub. These are typically 10-20k$ systems and my design has no oil, no seals, no pressure, no roller bearings, you can just throw grease in it. Probably 500$ to manufacture. And I'm *extremely* confident that it will have absolutely heroic strength and vibration properties.

Should I chuck in a patent application and see where life takes me, or should I dismiss it as head-noise?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
