Personally I tend to just outright skip things that are audio/video-only entirely, and only read transcripts when the author has made an effort to make them digestible outside of their original audio format.

I forgot the author's name, but one particularly strong example of such a digestible format comes to mind: they publish transcripts of their conference talks, but they are formatted as hr-delineated blocks with each block having the relevant presentation slide on the right, and the (cleaned up and sometimes reformatted) transcript of speech for that slide on the left. I've found this format very pleasant to follow, despite not being its original medium.

Every ban was permanent but revocable if someone showed genuine reflection and commitment to do better - this sometimes took minutes, sometimes months or even longer, sometimes never.

Randos complained for months. "You just call everyone a nazi", "how do you define fascist then", "you're being unreasonable", "the alt right aren't fascists", and so on, and so forth. Without exception, the ones complaining about it the most were the ones who already had a track prior record of being an asshole in different ways. A lot of the bans were the result of brigading attempts from, well, fascists who objected to being pushed out, pretending to be 'new users' and mysteriously immediately knowing about previous bans that happened before they joined.

It took a while, but they eventually gave up. The result was a pleasant community to be in, unusually pleasant for a privacy/security community. I haven't been around there for quite a while now, but my understanding is that it's still a nice place to this day.

"No fascists allowed" works, even under the worst conditions, and the "no, seriously, this is not up for debate, the moderator decides" is a critical component of *making* it work.

It means we're constantly having to treat the capitalist component as an adversary, fighting it, trying to keep it under control.

And that begs the question, why are we keeping it around at all? What unique thing is it giving us that is not achievable through some other mechanism that *isn't* a constant adversary? What is the capitalism component still doing in there to begin with?

This is all the more pressing of a question considering that essentially zero of the claims about how capitalism is supposed to benefit society (think 'trickle-down economics' and the like), have held up to scrutiny.

      In reply to nevent1q…l3pl
_________________________

This is precisely what I am talking about, though - "the rich dismantling democratic mechanisms" *is* the phenomenon I am describing, and it is a pretty much unavoidable outcome with the social and political dynamics that capitalism introduces as an ideology (which is what it is - not just an 'economic system' as it's often portrayed).

Very bluntly speaking, the core ideological tenet of capitalism *is* wealth accumulation, and the remaining way to do that once all the low-hanging fruit is exhausted, is to capture structures of power to your own (semi-)exclusive benefit. And since wealth accumulation is ideologically a virtue in capitalism, this can easily end up overriding 'democratic mechanisms' in the arena of public discourse. If you convince people that chasing wealth is good, then they will (sufficiently) approve of regulatory changes that function to that end, and more generally support the wealthy.

To stop this from happening, you'd have to remove the concept that "increasing wealth" is a desirable thing and a virtue, and by that point you're not talking about capitalism anymore, because that is what defines it. So the only way to have reliably regulated capitalism is to *not* have it at all.

      In reply to nevent1q…sry4
_________________________

Speaking as an anti-capitalist, I'd agree with all of this (except *maybe* the 'standard of living' thing because the methods of measurement are a bit sketchy there), but I'd argue there's a third problem that's missing here: the non-isolation between wealth and regulatory power.

This model assumes that the regulatory power stands above wealth in the hierarchy, and while this is initially true - and I'm going to assume that the regulatory power is benevolent here - this doesn't *remain* true because wealth and influence gained through capitalism can be traded back for regulatory power due to the social value assigned to wealth (which needs to be there for capitalism to 'work' as a concept, or the driving incentive disappears).

But what that means is that if you have regulators keeping capitalists in check, and capitalists slowly amassing wealth and influence that they can use to adjust the regulators, it's only a matter of time until they slowly chip away at the regulatory layer to reduce the restrictions and nudging, which then improves their wealth acquisition, and so on, until eventual regulatory capture. And incentive-wise, this is entirely consistent with capitalism's theory of operation.

So as far as I can see, 'controlled/regulated capitalism' will always turn into uncontrolled capitalism eventually; it can only ever work temporarily, and this matches the actual timeline of events.
