it's a well known fact that "password1" is not a strong password, "password2" will get you laughed at as you get hacked, and so it stands to reason that simply incrementing the trailing number will not result in a secure password.

HOWEVER, the string "password" prepended to a strong password (such as a 128 digit random number) does not make the strong password into a weak password, so I theorize that there exists a threshold after which incrementing password1 always results in strong passwords

I've always considered it to be important to respect even when it is optional. Tangerine had an attribution page that reproduced the license/copyright notices for the entire dependency graph. I had all the dependencies vendored, so the page was generated automatically from the sources. Mollytime will have a similar feature (eventually) once we're done rebuilding the UI and I figure out a way to do it without vendoring everything.

don't tell anyone but the real magic of 9front is how easy it is to change things on a whim. you can overlay a git repo over your filesystem to get up to date sources for everything in /sys/src/, a cold build of the entire OS and all the software is surprisingly fast, you can pop open the source code to any command with the src command, the code is concise, and the man pages have good coverage of standard library topics. i've never experienced this much immediacy to just tinker from linux.

i get the feeling the absence of a real C++ compiler or a C compiler newer than C89 is sort of a feature for the operating system though (even though it's probably mostly that way for a lack of dedicated development resources). idk if the rank and file see it that way or not, but i think making that midnight connection to the rest of the would probably be a mistake for the operating system

first is, i'm enjoying playing around with 9front. it fills me with an urge to port all of my toys over to it and play with them there. pretty much impossible because there's no C++ compiler or 3D APIs. I'd have to rewrite everything in another language and build a software renderer, and i don't really have time for that.

i spent most of the day tinkering with 9front, which i'm counting as progress towards my goal of "draw a picture". i feel like i have a better sense of how the docs are organized and what's included in the out-of-the-box software distribution. i got it playing sound, and i compiled a simple hello world program with pcc (posix compatible C89 compiler). i also used sshfs to mount an ssh session into my file system so i could copy some files between computers. i have thoughts.

ok the trick is to get all your partitions for other operating systems set up first, leave however much free space at the end of the drive open unpartitioned for 9front and then w q through all the 9front's fdisk options to have it do what it will with the empty space at the end of the drive. this also sets up an empty space moat on either side of the partition, and nothing is corrupted.

the mistake i made before was making the partition with gparted and then telling 9front to reuse it

i'm dd-ing a backup of /dev/sda (120gb) over to usb3 backup drive attached to a different computer over the network because i'm skeptical this machine has usb3 ports (i think it's just a touch too old for that, though i didn't check first). speed seems to peak with bs=512k (40.7 MB/s). both drives are platter hard drives not SSDs

so far so good, gentoo boots with them installed and reports approximately 8gb total memory! running memtest now. just think, i could run a web browser or gnome with this much ram :O
