Those following our journey south in our sailboat, Scarlet, from the Uk to Portugal know that we've been at it a few years. 2 years ago we left Gosport and eventually reached Quiberon in Brittany before we were stopped by our starter motor catching fire(!). We did engine repairs and maintenance there and overwintered for a year until last summer when a somewhat delayed start due to ADHD diagnosis getting in the way saw us reach Bilbao, where we spent last winter.

This year, when the weather allowed, we started moving again. We have now reached Muros in Galicia.

We knew this section, getting round the Galician rias, was going to be a race against time. It's an indented coastline with no safe shallows with treacherous rocks everywhere. If you stick to deep water you avoid it.

But every summer some of the population of Iberian orcas that spend winter and spring around the Strait of Gibraltar migrate north to Biscay to follow bluefin Tuna. And the only way to reliably avoid them is to stay in water of less than 20m depth. This is impossible in Galicia.

Our time has run out. Orcas have now been spotted north of Lisboa. They have arrived. We are still 3 rias from the Portuguese border.

So now we may be stuck, or at least have to watch VERY carefully for a window to JUST BLOODY RUN.

I'm part of the "orcas.pt" fleet, which is a group of mostly hobbyist sailors banding together to share information and advice about the orca situation. The "official" recommendations are terrible to the point that experts mostly prefer to work with our group, and as a result we get pretty good intel on where they are (some of them have GPS trackers I believe, but that exact info is only shared with the group admin because we don't want people looking for these animals).

Here's the rub. Orcas swim (when they aren't chasing something) at up to 50km per day. We have a pretty good read on where the danger areas are. Last sighting, draw a 50km circle for each 24 hours. Are you in it? Be afraid.

Almost no attacks have ever happened west of the 10th line of longitude, but we can't reasonably go out there in Scarlet. She is a 9 metre marina hopper absolutely not equipped for deep ocean sailing. Some people do cross the Atlantic in boats like that but they're nutters.

Also she is a deep fin keel with a single spade rudder; it will take very little orca action to pull our rudder clean off at which point there is a hole below the waterline that the rudder stock exited through and ... well, the boat sinks.

Unfortunately smaller sailboats with spade rudders which are most at risk from sinking on the first hit are amongst their favourite playthings. Contrary to the popular "orcas are going after the billionaires" narrative, the boats they trend to take are likely worth less than your car if you have a half decently paying job. Big motor yachts tend to steer by thrust vectoring and don't do "floating thing go spinny when I smack the shit out of its tail fin". They can also quite possibly outrun them which we absolutely cannot.

And then you abandon to liferaft after, assuming they haven't taken out your electrics (the batteries are back there), doing the whole mayday mayday mayday please send a fucking helicopter, I think these marine sheep spawn are going to eat me, HELP! thing (we have a handheld radio as well and iPhones can send distress signals even without cell coverage).

So anyway there you are in your liferaft, watching a load of your stuff go to the seabed, all three of you (probably. We usually have 3), throwing up (because throwing up in a liferaft is what you do. They are profoundly unpleasant spaces to spend any time), which surrounded by playful teenage delinquent 6 tonne murderfish who you have heard are VERY picky eaters and will only eat bluefin tuna and maybe octopus and definitely not human, honest, but which aren't above violently tossing floating shit around into the air for the lulz to see if it makes more fun vomiting and screaming noises, hoping that you don't drift into the rocks on what is literally called the "Coast of Death" when you translate the name into English.

So we're gonna like, properly pay attention to the "orca forecast", as it were.

And if we aren't absolutely certain it's safe to run for Vigo as fast as we fucking can, we may be stuck in Muros until autumn.

Let's see. Worst case we get the boat hauled out onto the hard and re-antifoul her (disgustingly messy but strangely pleasurable job).

if the worst does happen, assuming your boat is still floating and controllable after the first hit, apparently the thing to do is disengage autopilot, start the engine if not already running, apply FULL throttle, and motor directly away from the pod (preferably towards shallow water) as fast as possible. They can swim faster than the boat can go, but remember, they're juveniles doing it for a laugh, and apparently if they wander off from the pod by more than about 300 metres their mothers yell at them to come back.

"Aw mum! I was sinking the thing!"

More thoughts on ADHD medication, specifically amphetamine, after a year.

Like lots of people, I started them and BANG! Neo waking in his pod in The Matrix. Life changing. The scales fell from my eyes. I suddenly understood. It all made sense. The stuff I found so incredibly difficult for half a century and other people could just ... do it?

I wept.

"Don't chase the high", they all warn. What does that mean?

About 4-6 weeks later I had an argument with Zoe. I felt some of the old behaviours creeping back in. What? Why is that happening?

Then I started to go to bed late again, and procrastinate, and some of the other stuff. Not all though, I kept the place clean. The piles of clothes never came back. I was still getting relief from sensory issues.

And each new titration dose brought it all back.

Until titration stopped, and I was on my final dose.

And it slipped, slowly, it slipped.

Why did it slip? "Tolerance! You have become tolerant to amphetamine! Take a meds holiday!", they all chant.

I tried. I got as far as 3pm before I couldn't stand the bullshit.

Thing is, the evidence that drugs tolerance to therapeutic doses of amphetamine in ADHD even develops is ... dubious. There's a great video by Russell Barkly on this, here: https://youtu.be/RbZjL7czIy0?si=6xHaoY-gd6xOThv0

It's not though. I worked out what has happened, and it's fine.

Unmedicated, undiagnosed ADHD is marked by horrible disregulated emotions (more severe in the combined (me) and hyperactive forms I believe), non existent executive functioning, difficulty focusing, and yada yada.

It is, in a nutshell, "really bloody awful".

If you think you have ADHD but are undiagnosed, you possibly just read that and felt like a fraud, didn't you? "But I don't feel that awful!"

How do you KNOW? You have never known any different.

Because here's the thing. You grow up with this crap and you start to mask it, because you HAVE to.

But masking and coping strategies are profoundly psychologically expensive. They destroy us with burnout run the long run.

So we mask to the point where we can more or less make it through the day, and no more.

And it's a pretty sodding miserable existence (Yes, it really is, yes, for you, person reading this wth "some traits". Lots of stuff you accept as a normal part of being human simply is not. I know you don't believe me, even if you think you do. I wouldn't have believed me either).

And then we get diagnosed.

And medicated.

It. Goes. Away.

It all goes away.

Annnnnnnnd breathe!

You are suddenly Mr Spock. You are impervious to your emotions. You can just DO STUFF! You CAN clean the house and you DO and you ENJOY IT! What witchcraft is this?

"I'm cured! Why did nobody tell me about this?" (We did. You ignored us)

You also aren't cured. You still have ADHD.

Your emotions are still there.

You still have executive dysfunction,.

You still struggle to focus.

All of it. It didn't go away.

You just can't hear it.

Why? Because ... well, you are outside and it's stupid sodding bright, and loud. Insanely loud.

And you've been out there for hours.

Then you come into a dim room which is quiet. You can't see anything, you can't hear anything. It's all there though, just below your level of sensitivity.

A few month later when stuff starts coming back and you conclude the meds are failing? They aren't. Your eyes are adjusting to the dark.

Here's another metaphor: A shelled of water has been dumped on a landscape, continually, over thousands of years. It carves out a basin. It finds its level. Water always finds its level.

Move it to the side and it will flow back into the basin it carved. And so it is with us. We start meds and the level of effort we have always applied to make it through the day, which was borderline killing us, suddenly makes it STUPIDLY EASY.

Borderline killing us. Still is.

So you start to dismantle your big expensive coping strategies, because they were hurting you.

You dismantle them until ... well, you start to approach the level of functionality, or rather disfunctionality that you are used to. And then you stop.

Because water finds its level.

You conclude they aren't working, so you take a meds break and OH MY GOD IT'S HORRIBLE.

What the hell is going on? You turned the bloody difficulty knob up to max again. That's what the hell is going on.

After a week you start meds again, and they magically work! IT WAS TOLERANCE ALL ALONG!

No it wasn't, you muppet. You just started to match your effort to the difficulty level again.

You can get trapped in this cycle.

Or you can realise that you deserve a rest, you've had a rest, and that's nice. Now get up and do your goddam laundry, which is a thing you can do, and is still far easier than it ever was.

OK, gonna preface this by asking you to read to th end before judging.

It's been more than a year now and initially my experience of diagnosis was very much, "I hate this thing and would love it to go away".

And to be fair, I still hate this thing and would love it to go away. But it isn't going to.

However, this did colour my views of the terms "neurodivergent" and "neurodiverse", because while I saw the former as simply descriptive, and largely value neutral: my neurology is an outlier, the latter seemed to normalise what I very definitely experience as pathology and sometimes even want to celebrate it.

And I don't want to celebrate the way my own nervous system torments me constantly, nor do I seek to regard that as "just another equally valid way of being that's no worse than any other", because it is objectively worse.

My nervous system torments me. That's not a good thing.

BUT:

I find my position evolving quite a lot more nuance. One of the things I've been doing for the last year is therapy. I had loads of therapy before but this time I had specific requirements.

I wanted a therapist who was: female, late diagnosed ADHD, LGBT positive, and on stimulant medication.

And there are reasons for all of these, but the ones that may not be immediately obvious are why she needed to be late diagnosed and on stimulants.

It's because I didn't want to have a recurring expense while I talked to someone weekly for an hour a time during which I spent large fractions of that hour having stuff pushed at me that I KNOW DOES NOT WORK, and having to argue the toss.

I needed commonality of reference.

Let me give you an example: mindfulness meditation. I can't. Don't reply to this saying that I just have to practice, or I haven't found my thing. I can't do it. Any form of metacognition while I'm in the unmedicated state results in setting off an ADHD thought chain that starts ruminating on metacognition, which ruminates on rumination on metacognition, which ruminates on ruminates on STACK OVERFLOW! CORE DUMPED!

Or in common parlance, "it gives me a right fucker of a migraine".

That's the unmedicated state (in case it's not clear, stimulant meds aren't like, say, antidepressants where you aim for a constant effect. What you get instead is two modes: medicated and unmedicated, and you will switch from one to the other sometimes as abruptly as under a minute. You can seem to be two different people). I can do mindfulness meditation in the medicated state.

There's just no point that I've discovered to doing that. Useless activity. "Find inner calm!" Um, got it. That's why I am able to count my breaths or some shit. So what?

"Well it's like exercising a muscle, and eventually you'll be able to do it unmedicated"

No I won't, because that MAKES MY SYNAPSES CRASH MY BRAIN, and if it didn't I wouldn't be in the unmedicated state, knobhead.

My therapist asked me, "can you meditate?"

"No"

"Ok, cool. Me neither. Let's do something else"

Easy. "Something else" was reparenting my inner child and it's been crazy effective.

And it helped crystallise something I've been thinking more and more because YouTube has been increasingly pushing pop psychology videos at me and something most of them have in common is this: They present common neurodivergent behaviours as "trauma response", and never once mention neurodivergence.

And yeah, that's exactly why I'm starting to feel that "neurodiversity" is something that I can identify with. Yes, my neurology results in things that are objectively pathological and they never won't be.

But the fact that I'm playing with a Whacky Tracks fidget stim whilst typing this is not one of them. That's harmless, and it doesn't mean "I'm stressed", or that "mummy didn't love me". It just means that I enjoy having something in my hand to fiddle with.

ASRS is a screening test for adults to see if it's worth pursuing an ADHD diagnosis. It is 18 questions, written by neurotypical people who assume their external observations of ADHD are accurate representations of what it's like to have it, so needs to be translated into "actual person with ADHD" before you fill it in.

That's why it includes stupid shit like, "do you feel driven by a motor?" No, I do not. Things driven by a motor spin round and round and I do not spin.

And, "Do you have problems remembering appointments" to which everyone responds, "It's 2026 and I have a fucking SMARTPHONE".

So that being the case, I have often thought one written BY ADHDers, FOR ADHDers would be better.

It would include questions like:

Just seen someone saying they support bans on trans healthcare for under 18s because “let kids be kids”.

By the time I hit puberty, I had KNOWN for a decade.

I also knew that telling anyone would be profoundly dangerous.

So I hid who I was and, am almost grateful that the neurodivergence gave the other kids something else to latch on to. They were so busy calling me a “mong” that they didn’t notice I was trans.

Because that might have got me murdered.

Or pushed me into a position where I felt I had no options other than the same end result.

So I hid it.

And I hid it really well.

And one of the things that happens when a 5 year old child is terrified of their parents, or their families, or the school bullies finding out who they really are is that they end up traumatised.

A 5 year old child. Traumatised and ashamed.

Ashamed because adults openly talked about them.

Or people like them.

And what they said was horrific. What they said made it very clear that they would regard their own kids as subhuman monsters if they ever found out.

So we hid. And an important part of ourselves died in childhood. A light that should have shone, went out.

I’ve tried my best to rekindle it.

I’ve managed somewhat but it will never be right. Not really. I’ve made peace with that.

“Let kids be kids”. Trans kids like me never got to be.

Because of people who say things like that.

Being a member of the Cult of Amphetamine is all consuming in a way that even transition isn’t.

The trans thing these days is easy. You take HRT and then forget about it (we outsource “constantly being Normal about trans women” to Joanne Rowling and Shut Up Wesley Streeting).

But this … the thing is you have the whole Flowers for Agernon daily speed run (pun possibly intended). You count your hours and plan your day around the likely time, plus or minus a bit, when you will suddenly turn from being a functional adult into an overstimulated bag of cats.

A true revolution would be giving us all day relief. You can’t do that with stimulants though.

And as a result, you kinda end up leaning into the whole “medically sanctioned speed addict” thing, especially as irreverent humour is already something having ADHD tends to prime you for.

But they end up working not as engineers or scientists, but as artisans in an industry that comes to depend on them working as artisans.

2015 in a blender” over and over and over until it’s just whatever the silicon equivalent of drool is.

Imagine being one of the people who tried to prevent this and nobody listened to you.

In his culturally significant work of 1995, Mr Cocker gives an allegedly autobiographical account of a night spent in a field in the southern English county of Hampshire. The account is based on a claim, supposedly overheard, that someone makes detailing their abundant possession of a number of substances which probably include a mixture persil and chalk dust.

These, however, would generally be regarded as excipients, resold considerably above their retail value. The significant active ingredients of the mixture would be 3,4 methelyne dioxy N-methyl dextro alpha metyhl phenethylamine (“Molly”) and its base compound, dextro alpha methyl phenethylamine (“Benny”)

These are both monoamine neurotransmitter releasing agents and monoamine neurotransmitter reuptake inhibitors, with significant efficacy on the monoamines, dopamine and noradrenaline.

Mr Cocker elaborates by noting that in the middle of the night, the experience of consuming inadvisable amounts of these substances is an agreeable one. Their relatively short period of efficacy, however, results in levels of the two aforementioned monoamine neurotransmitters becoming clinically depleted at around 6am.

In a phone call to his mother, perhaps from a BT phone booth as this story occurs just before the wide scale adoption of cellular telephones and certainly ones that would still have significant charge at this point, the storyteller laments to his mother a “horrible feeling” which “grows and grows” and leads him to deduce the absence of an “important part” of his brain.

That Mr Cocker describes monoamine insufficiency as a “horrible feeling” leads your author to regret her lack of mastery of the tiny violin as she, perhaps understandably but uncharitably contributes, “welcome to my normal life, you daft bastard. Sucks, doesn’t it?”

I want to explain a few things and then it might be clearer why UK trans people are upset.

In 2001 I married my wife, Sylvia.

In 2005 I started medical transition. For the state to recognise this I had to submit to standards of "care" which were humiliating, degrading and which placed me at risk of violence.

But I did it "by the book"

As I did it "by the book", the NHS agreed to reregister me as female, which makes sense because my anatomy now is.

In 2007 I had sex reassignment surgery. This had to be signed off by two mental health professionals, "by the book", and it was.

In 2008 I applied for gender recognition. This involved signing a statutory obligation, stating that I promised, BY LAW, to live fully as female for the rest of my life. As this was done, "by the book", the government promised that it would treat me as such.

Its first act as treating me as female was to annul our marriage because it was a same sex marriage and those were not allowed.

The state then reissued my birth certificate, correcting the "mistake" it had originally made when it recorded me as male, "by the book".

In 2009 Sylvia and I married for the second time, in a same sex civil partnership, which was done "by the book", because the state regarded me as female and I was bound by law to be female.

In 2013 we married again, because the state decided that same sex marriage was in fact allowed after all. This was done, "by the book". Despite having been married for 12 years, we had to submit ourselves to individual questioning to prove our relationship was genuine, "by the book".

In April of 2025 the state turned round and told me that I had been mistaken. That it never regarded me as female. That I was male the whole time. That the marriage it annulled because it was a same sex marriage was never a same sex marriage (but it stays annulled). That the civil partnership in 2009 never really happened because "opposite sex" civil partnerships were not allowed in 2009.

And that the legal obligation I have to live as female for the rest of my life, which I signed and gave up my marriage for, is still in effect but also if I keep following it, I am breaking the law and subject to arrest. As it's still valid, presumably if I don't keep following it, I am also breaking the law and subject to arrest.

The law of the land simultaneously requires me to be both a man and a woman and if I do either then I am breaking the law and subject to arrest.

At every stage I did what the state asked me to, even though it was humiliating, degrading and cruel.

And it kept moving the goalposts, and reneging on the agreements it made, whilst continuing to hold me to them even when they are now mutually contradictory.

Apparently this is "all my fault" and I should have known that this would be the consequences of my actions when I started medical transition 2 decades ago.

Perhaps you can now appreciate why we are upset?

As a side project they had us design an integrated RISC and graphics system for a handheld gaming successor to the Gameboy. We got some local games devs you’ve definitely heard of, but who I’m not going to name, to knock up a few 3D demo proof of concept games. There was a very fun racing game for example.

This was showed to the CEO of Nintendo who, as we were told, was impressed, and asked how we were doing the hardware acceleration for the 3D graphics because it was better than their N64 titles.

He was then told it was being done entirely in software on this little 32 bit chip that was barely more powerful than a 486 (although the 486, of course, ran Doom just fine).

Apparently he did not take this well, and as we thought at the time, buried the project.

Then suddenly, a couple of years later, the GBA launched, but pretty much only with 2D sprite based stuff. We knew what it was capable of, but it seems there was still a determination to not have it show up their consoles.

The original BBC Micro was a 32k 6502 based thing built like a tank so that school kids couldn’t break it. Its thing was that it was very easy to plug home made hardware in. It’s kinda the original inspiration for the Raspberry Pi.

Every school had one, or a few if they were well funded, but they were rare outside that environment where most people either got a Spectrum or C64. The BBC Micro, beyond schools, was bought by a VERY specific section of the British middle class.

This whole thing repeated in the late 80s, with the Amiga, Atari ST and Archimedes playing the roles or the C64, Spectrum and BBC Micro respectively.

Saw someone elsewhere assert that Britain is “one of the least corrupt countries in the world”, and couldn’t let that go unchallenged, so here’s what I said:

Only because of this one weird loophole, which I will explain below:

For the last decade, the previous government has been awarding public contracts for infrastructure, etc, to what are essentially shell companies run by their mates. These companies then do the bare minimum for as long as possible, which if you drive round the UK, is why you see all those road “improvement” works which do nothing and take forever and never seem to have anyone working. It took two years to replace a roundabout with a set of traffic lights near my apartment, for example. Other examples: large amounts of “PPE equipment” during Covid which turned out to be useless junk.

Obviously they aren’t actually spending anything but a trivial amount going through the motions, so what happens to the rest of the money, which let’s remember, was raised by taxes.

Well, it gets donated back to the ruling party as “political donations”, and then if the pretend contractor does a good enough job of this, they get an knighthood, or even a seat in the House of Lords for “services rendered”.

Now you might think that this sounds corrupt, and you would be right. It sounds deeply corrupt, but apparently it’s not because a lot of the global agencies which work out corruption indices are based in, checks notes, London, and are probably in on the scam, and get to define what “corruption” means, and define it to mean, “not this”.

Et voila! You have a country with one of the biggest wealth gaps in Europe funnelling vast amounts of public money to populist spaffers in government, all legal, laundered and sanitised.

The whole of UK society is like this. It’s how it works, and once you see it you either join in, or walk away in disgust.
