Video Trimmer 26.03.1, live on Flathub, fixes a known case where trimming an .mp4 file could leave some frames before the start of the video that were only visible in certain players (VLC, Firefox). Trimming is still restricted to keyframes, but they should now be visible in all players.

If you can reproduce the invisible frame problem on 26.03.1, please open an issue attaching the input file and trim timestamp.

https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.gnome.gitlab.YaLTeR.VideoTrimmer

The reason it's not done yet is I'm very busy with uni. Barely any time for my other projects.

2. I implemented ext-background-effect for popups, fixed some edge cases and did some necessary refactors. A few more fixes left before merge.

3. Meanwhile, various projects are adding ext-background-effect support. For example, DankMaterialShell's git version with quickshell-git already does blur out of the box.

#niri

So ppl who want to use LLM can do so at their pleasure, and only ppl who actively want to cheat (hopefully very few) will try to use LLM in the banned category.

This must work with all other niri features, including background blur. When the window itself is blocked out that's easy, but what if something in the background layer is blocked out?

Certainly turned out to be one of the trickiest pieces of logic to properly support this. Especially the window closing animation which renders a snapshot of the last visible window contents.

#niri

The reason this needs special treatment is that when a window closes, niri renders a snapshot of its last visible contents to use for the animation. This happens outside the normal rendering path so I needed to thread through the xray background rendering logic as well as the correct window coordinates (since the xray background needs to know where the window is to draw the correct thing).

#niri

I'm like on my third refactor attempt now but I think I've got a good approach.

During this video there's no reblurring whatsoever, all just drawing cached static textures.

#niri

Usually you do it by putting yourself into a scope, then exec-ing the target program. But that's a 7 ms toll on startup time, so in niri we spawn the program right away, and then put it into a scope. However, if the program forks fast enough, that child doesn't go into the scope..

#niri #linux #systemd

Along with scrolling the view on DnD near the screen edge. Going through the overview, or always through the keyboard, would be very annoying.

#niri

over the past few days i was exploring how terminal apps work (yes it's as bad as they say) to realize an idea i've had a while ago: a terminal ui for plitki, my vsrg engine. likely not the first term vsrg, but nevertheless my own.

how bad would it be, quantized to the terminal grid? surprisingly, with the right block characters, not too bad.

ofc being plitki, there's full support for all kinds of SV

4K SV: https://youtu.be/GzLHJjB-zAU
7K LN: https://youtu.be/dFpWJRPD5ZA

https://github.com/YaLTeR/plitki

Finally, both at niri startup and when switching TTYs, your screen won't flicker, as long as resolution/refresh rate stay the same.

Even when the screen does blank, it'll go faster, as there's now just one modeset instead of two (clear then draw frame).

#niri

This makes it possible to scroll the view mouse-only without going through the Overview (the zooming gets quite tiring when it's frequent), and makes it possible to scroll the view touch-only. So opening foot sized "proportion 0.5" and then pressing Mod+R will switch you to the next preset width, even if foot actually opened slightly smaller to match its terminal grid. Before the change, the first Mod+R would pick the same "proportion 0.5" in this case and "do nothing".

#niri

This design requires a lot of work to properly support includes, but in turn we get atomic and selective reloading (if output part of the config didn't change, we don't override your transient output adjustments), better error messages and no problems with things like "spawn-at-startup" that should only work once.

#niri

They're useful for config organization, but also for custom desktop shells to be able to change colors without having to edit the main user's config.

Today I finished the first step towards this: a many-days-long refactor that makes the main config part, layout, mergeable, i.e., able to be combined from multiple parts. And building on this, per-output/workspace overrides.

https://github.com/YaLTeR/niri/pull/2449

Testing wanted here!

#niri

This problem is hard to trigger unless you're specifically trying to (then it's easy), but it was causing "downstream" problems for more complex actions.

The fix was simple enough, but I imagined enough "interesting" cases around it and decided to write a whole bulk of tests. Check this out, all thanks to our layout and clock code!

#niri

It lets desktop components (i.e. bars) show workspaces and do some basic operations on them.

The two bars with ext-workspace that I know of are sfwbar and xfce4-panel. Unfortunately, I seem to have surfaced several problems in their implementations. I opened issues in sfwbar; would be great if someone took a look from Xfce. I am still very much *not* planning to integrate Xwayland directly, but with this PR (and an accompanying xwayland-satellite PR), niri will create the X11 sockets and autostart xwl-s on demand, all out of the box with zero configuration. So, it'll work just like other compositors, but with xwl-s instead of direct Xwayland.

https://github.com/YaLTeR/niri/pull/1728

#niri
