However, from teaching at a public university I can tell you Windows stories that will freeze your blood how stupid this thing is under the right (lol) circumstances.

I stand by it: Linux in 2026 is by and large better for average users than Windows.

And it's not even close.

Of course, if you are dependent on particular software suites, your mileage may vary.

However, looking from the angle of what kind of work most white collar folks do, the most specialized thing is something that even web versions of office suites like #nextcloud can do - and #linux will do just fine.

So if you need e.g. #adobe or are selling kernel-level anti-cheat games or whatever, then yes, #windows is probably the platform you will cling to until the bitter end.

I've been using #Linux on and off for over two decades (with more intense phases during my university studies to be fair) and I can confidently say that when I returned in 2022 I was honestly surprised, just HOW MATURE it has become.

When I finally deleted Windows from my main work machine late 2025 I was 100% certain that indeed, nothing was missing.

From what I've seen, people tend to vastly overestimate how much time it takes to "fix" their Linux (whatever distro it is) and at the same time just take all the things they do to keep #Windows barely working as "part of the deal".

There is one silver-lining and that is the transient property of *commercial* software: Liability has not been changed and my understanding is that (partly or fully) AI-generated commercial software still subjects the vendor to full liability for the effects of said software.

While I agree with the point about #math being complex and scary and genius-level playing field stuff (for an external observer, that is), I personally think the main point is much more boring than that: a lot of math is simply formalized patterns in combinaorially different ways. Whether you look at Algebra or Topological Varieties up to Category Theory, just like coding, there is a common formalism that will thread through the whole field.

Re-reading e.g. Goethe's Faust at different points in my life was rewarded with completely different insights. For some metaphors and relations I wasn't ready until I had more and different life experiences.

(This goes for many things, not just Faust, obviously.)
