The amount of disgust I feel for people gleefully sharing electrical disinformation probably approaches something like hate.

If you have no idea how electrical grid lightning protection works, you are *not* qualified to make *any* statement on domestic surge protection that involves in any way lightning (especially dramatically implying it's useless) and I hate when people take those buffoons seriously.

Besides, there are all sorts of other failure scenarios that can induce surges of much lesser magnitude.

Localized conditions like the prevalence of copper theft also become quite relevant.

---

And then that particular one annoying me right now demonstrates no understanding of what ground return path through earth actually *does* and the fact that lightning *differs* from the norm in that aspect.

Or what GFCIs do. Will the digging oneself deeper continue?

---

The very documentation they linked to justify their bullshit says they're wrong about surge tolerance in power supplies too (though it also fails to account for several cases I know). :facepalm_cirno:

One thing I'll miss from borgbackup is the repository approach. It enabled deduplication across datasets.

Most others are dataset-specific so one mostly gets differential backups and no dedupe.

As I look upon `@world` `emerge` updates sometimes taking a while, I think that `btrfs` and/or `zfs` snapshots sure are convenient and necessary for such systems.

After all, what if the power went out for [20ms](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blinking#Central_nervous_system's_control) (long past what any ATX power supply is designed to cope with) while it's overwriting something important?

Then of course I remember that question isn't hypothetical and I did break an Arch Linux system in that exact way in the past. Binary packages may be faster, but they're nowhere near fast enough (<=11ms commit should work on compliant ATX supplies).

One could then think, okay, but before `btrfs` and `zfs` there were [LVM snapshots](https://web.archive.org/web/20260801154104/https://linux.die.net/man/8/lvcreate), right? Possibly, the feature was documented even back in 2007. Barely anyone talked about it though.

So what's with unix-likes mostly not having transactional updates (not that other OSes do much better, but it was expected for Windows to brick itself for basically no reason)? Is the expectation just that all users are privileged-enough to afford a UPS? Or to cope with arbitrary breakage when the power network has so much as a hiccup (or to be so privileged as to have reliable infrastructure)?

One of the many silly things about NFS is that most server implementations keep no host-wise monitoring on the underlying exports, so if one modifies the underlying filesystem without redundantly mounting it from NFS localhost as well, all sorts of unpleasant things happen.

That lack of modularity, isolation and separation of concern has been responsible for a *lot* of exploitable bugs over the years.

There's a reason I'm so troubled by this. The one vaguely sane filesystem I found is stuck on a system being slopped, and the filesystem implementation is *also* being slopped. I lack viable alternatives. What am I to do?

Sure the batteries were less volume-efficient but that just means more of them. However, electrical demand was both lower than now, and suddenly investing a lot into both solar and storage would *also* have led to improvements we've since seen, except much faster since there would have been a meaningful amount of investment in the matter by someone other than random companies and the odd university.

> GNUclear reactor in my backyard was practical prior to the 1980s, but nuclear isn't allowed?

Transport of nuclear fuel is needlessly hazardous (great opportunity for theft and misuse) and compromises eventual autarky (so long as fusion isn't figured out) as it cannot be found everywhere in sufficient quantities (encourages foreign capitalist abusers).

> baseload

That is based on an obsolete view of grid production that is largely due to the fact that several non-solar/storage technologies *cannot* be shutdown or brought back up quickly, reasonably, safely or cost effectively so they have to *always* be working to at least some degree. It's a way to cope with technological limitations, not an inherently necessary or good way to meet energy demand.

Even hydro-electric dams/storage demonstrate some inflexibility in requiring minutes to adjust product or turn off.

It's annoying that a recent project of mine stalled.

Object Storage is all too often those huge ridiculous unwieldy codebases hard to audit or investigate properly.

So some people on some blogs say "why not use webdav, it should be more than enough for most small use-cases", which, indeed, on paper it should. So one goes to investigate, and finds that a lot of webdav servers are plainly broken and so are many of the clients, many failing something as basic as properly doing non-broken percent-encoding of paths & filenames (some of the servers fail too).

At this point the most reasonable option is probably writing a 9p client library or something. [diod](https://github.com/chaos/diod) at least works properly, even in unprivileged user mode.

Negative & positive tag filtering without stupid limits like danbooru's is essential.

It's kind of the *entire point* of a booru. At least, the sane ones among us don't.

BeOS had it as a thing by default.

> i've noticed that often gui programs change how they process input or stop responding to outside input altogether once the main window has been launched. maybe i'd attribute that to bad development though.

In some cases that's bad frameworks, in many other cases it's bad programming.

Part of the issue with GUI frameworks on UNIX-likes is that they adopt a view of a hard division between GUI & /somewhat/ interoperable POSIX CLI.

> meanwhile with cli scriptability is the default and expected behavior. in gui it's still very lacking.

I would say that CLI scriptability in UNIX-likes are also uniquely awful.

PowerShell did it better. Unstructured pipes simply shouldn't be a thing.

Ideally, programs would have mailboxes capable of receiving dynamically-typed messages with proper structure.

(And then of course LispMs didn't need pipes because the Listener allowed simply using Lisp.)

Lisp Machines had their own take on that.

Even Microsoft Windows has its own paltry imitation in COM.
