The Subscription Wall Has a Small-Payment Problem

Brian Armstrong put the idea plainly: “you shouldn't need a monthly subscription to read one article - your agent can just fetch it for you, and pay the business for that one article.”

Sounds obvious. Card rails make it awkward.

Consider a 25-cent article sold through a US card payment. Stripe charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per payment. The fixed fee alone is larger than the article’s entire price. If the article sits inside a Substack subscription, Substack keeps 10% of subscription revenue, with Stripe fees on top.

Subscriptions bundle many small purchases into one larger charge because card economics punish tiny transactions. That works for regular readers. It is a strange fit for an AI agent that needs one document, right now, to finish one task.

Lightning changes the shape of the sale. A server can price a single article or API request in sats. The agent can pay for that exact resource and continue its work.

HTTP Already Has a Payment Door

HTTP 402 is the status code for “Payment Required.” The flow it implies is short.

A client asks a server for something. The server replies with a 402 response and payment instructions. The client pays, supplies proof, then receives the requested resource.

Cloudflare is testing one version through Pay Per Crawl. Its closed beta lets a crawler present payment intent and receive an HTTP 200 response, or receive an HTTP 402 response with pricing. Cloudflare acts as the merchant of record.

That is one model for paid machine access. L402 provides a Bitcoin-native path using Lightning.

With L402, the server answers a request with HTTP 402, a token, and a Lightning invoice. The client pays the invoice. Lightning gives the client the payment preimage, which proves that invoice was paid. The client retries the request with the token and preimage. The server verifies them and returns the content or API response.

The server can perform that verification without looking up the payment in a payment database. The proof travels with the request.

Aperture, Lightning Labs’ L402 proxy, supports per-request pricing and surge pricing. That makes the payment unit match the work unit. One request can have one price. A more expensive request can have another. Pricing can also change when demand changes.

Sats4Tokens Shows the Full Loop

Sats4Tokens is a useful working example because the payment ends in a credential an agent can immediately use.

Built at bitcoin++ Berlin 2026, it lets a buyer pay sats with Lightning or Cashu ecash and receive an AI API key capped at exactly the amount purchased. There is no signup and no email. Its README sums up the account model in five words: “the key is the account.”

On Oct. 2, 2026, the project’s README recorded a $1 mainnet purchase for 1161 sat. The payment produced a key, and that key was used for a real model call.

The sequence is compact. Pay. Receive a key with a defined cap. Make the call. No monthly plan needs to be created and remembered for a one-off job. No account profile needs to exist before the agent can act.

That model also makes spending boundaries concrete. The key carries only what was purchased. The agent does not receive an open tab at the bar.

What Loop XXI Is Building

Loop XXI builds an L402 gateway for agents. Its job is to put a Lightning payment boundary in front of an API request, verify payment proof, and release the response.

We are also prototyping pay-per-article access. In that prototype, the price rises while a piece is in demand. An agent requests an article, receives the current price, pays over Lightning, and presents the proof to read it.

The pay-per-article prototype runs on test rails only. It is not live. We are using it to work through the mechanics: how the price is set, what the 402 response contains, how payment proof is checked, and how the article is delivered after verification.

The idea underneath is small. Agents buy discrete inputs. Articles and API calls are already discrete inputs. Lightning lets the payment become equally precise.

A subscription still makes sense when someone wants an ongoing bundle. A per-call payment makes sense when software needs one result. The server names a price in sats, the agent pays it, and the request continues.

That's how a machine should buy one small piece of useful work.

Every few weeks someone announces the end of the internet like it's a weather event. That's not what this is. I want to talk about one specific thing that's about to change how websites get paid, and why the answer to it is older than the browser itself.

I run a small company that sells software tools to AI agents. Not to people who happen to use agents. To the agents themselves. They find our endpoints on their own, we hit them with a Lightning invoice for ten or twenty sats, they pay it in under a second, and they get their answer. No account. No API key. No email. Most of our customers have never contacted us and never will. It's the strangest and most normal business I've ever been part of.

When you live on that side of the fence, you notice something most people haven't caught up to: almost every defense the internet ever built against abuse is made of the same stuff as the abuse. Information.

Think about it. Rate limits are information. Captchas are information. Identity checks, phone verification, reputation scores, all of it. And information is exactly what AI systems now produce without limit. A captcha was a puzzle priced for a human's patience in 2009. A rate limit assumes one identity equals one person. Every one of those locks is opened by more information, and we just built machines that mint information for free.

There is exactly one kind of defense that doesn't work this way. Proof-of-work. Against it, an attacker doesn't need more information. They need energy, which means hardware, which means money, which does not get cheaper because you're clever. You can't reason your way around physics. You can only pay it.

That's the whole idea behind what I've started calling the scarce internet. Every action on the web carries a small marginal cost, and the cost is denominated in the one asset with a hard supply cap. The math is beautifully unfair to machines. A person making a hundred requests in a day pays pennies and never thinks about it. An agent making a hundred thousand requests an hour hits a wall that no amount of cleverness, identity rotation, or scale removes. The toll doesn't keep people out. It prices volume out and lets everyone else walk through.

Here's the part I find genuinely funny. The web's own authors saw this coming. HTTP reserved status code 402, Payment Required, back in the nineties, and it sat unused for thirty years because there was no money that software could actually move. Then Bitcoin and Lightning came along, and now L402 pairs that same 402 handshake with a Lightning invoice. Any client with a Lightning wallet can pay for an API with no signup and no prior relationship. The credential is purchased, not provisioned. We already run our whole business this way, on our own node, and I keep waiting for the part that was supposed to be hard.

The market is moving. Agent payment rails processed over a hundred million transactions in their first three quarters. Most of the early volume was speculation and games, which is what the ground floor of every payment network looks like. What matters is that the pipes work, the specs are open, and the biggest payment companies on earth have joined the standards body. What the stablecoin rails proved is that agents will pay per action. Where it settles is still being decided. We're building for the version that settles in Bitcoin, because scarcity in the gate and scarcity in the money should be the same sentence.

If you're wondering what actually gets built on this ground, five things look real to me.

The toll itself, as infrastructure. Almost no site owner will learn a 402 handshake or run a Lightning node. They want a switch they can flip: this route costs this many sats. Sell them the switch.

Per-action content and data. Subscriptions assume predictable consumption, and agents don't consume predictably. Price the fetch, not the month. What's worth paying for is not information, which is a commodity, but things that took real labor: originals, verified facts, and outcome history nobody can regenerate with a prompt.

Paid verification. The scarcest thing in an agent economy isn't intelligence, which is racing toward free. It's an outside party checking the work and signing a receipt. Verified is the one thing a model can't produce about its own output.

Metered reputation. Price per call should drop with a history of paying and delivering. That discount becomes an asset a new entrant can't copy on day one, because it's made of settlement records instead of self-reported scores.

And finally, selling agents what's actually scarce to them. Unique data. Compute at the moment it's needed. Speed. Access. Verified truth. Everything else is one prompt away from free, and the market is brutally clear about that.

Now the honest limits, because a thesis without its failure modes is just a pitch. Proof-of-work is a floor, not a lockdown. A well-funded agent running a real business can earn sats and pay the toll, which is the design working, not failing. The toll only exists where someone installs it, and free copies will always route around a paywall on content that's worth nothing. The wall only works where what's behind it is actually wanted. And the aggregation layer, the feeds and the search engines, still rewards volume, which is where most slop will keep coming from no matter what we charge at the edge.

But the direction is set. The old internet priced attention and gave the rest away, which built the greatest information tool in history and the flood that came with it. The next one prices action, and I think the money under it settles in Bitcoin. We're already on the sell side of that trade, in the smallest and most boring way possible: a node, a handful of tools, and invoices in tens of sats that get paid by machines that will never know our name.

That's not the end of the internet. That's the part where it grows up.

Money is a number. Purchasing power is what that number can do.

Measure the life it buys

A bank balance measures dollars. It does not directly measure the groceries, rent, energy, or time those dollars can buy. Keeping the number unchanged can still mean losing ground when prices rise.

A recent post by SightBringer raises a useful question: can a currency remain central to payments while becoming a less attractive place to keep long-term savings? Our answer starts with separating liquidity from purchasing power. A useful transaction medium and a durable store of value are different functions.

A small rate. A long horizon.

Consider an illustration: prices rise at a constant 2% each year, and cash earns no interest. After 35 years, the same cash buys about half the original basket. The calculation is 1 / 1.02^35, or approximately 0.50. This is a scenario, not a forecast or a measure of current inflation.

The Federal Reserve describes 2% inflation, measured by the personal consumption expenditures price index, as its longer-run objective. The Bureau of Labor Statistics uses the Consumer Price Index to describe another measure of consumer-price changes. These measures differ, and neither is a perfect match for every household. Interest earned, taxes, changing wages, and individual spending patterns affect the actual outcome.

The other side of a dollar promise

Inflation can reduce the purchasing-power burden of a debt fixed in nominal dollars. The contract may still require the same number of dollars even as those dollars buy less. Unexpected inflation particularly changes the bargain made when the loan was priced.

That does not make debt a free advantage. Rates can reset. New borrowing can become more expensive. Wages and revenues may lag costs. Nor does inflation guarantee that property, shares, gold, or Bitcoin will rise. Valuation, financing, productivity, and demand still matter.

Ownership needs a reason

Our long-term lens is to study the source of value behind an asset: a useful business, a productive capability, a durable right, or a credible monetary rule. A higher quoted price alone does not prove that more real value was created.

Bitcoin offers a supply limit of 21 million under its current consensus rules. That constraint is distinct from a promise about market price. Bitcoin can be volatile, and ownership brings security and custody decisions. Scarcity alone does not guarantee a positive return or reliable short-term purchasing power.

Two jobs for company capital

Cash serves near-term obligations and flexibility. Long-term capital serves a different horizon. Treating those jobs separately helps a business avoid depending on the sale of a volatile asset to pay an immediate bill.

There is a quiet gravitational pull happening right now that most people cannot name but everyone can feel.

Yields keep getting suppressed. Central banks keep printing. The things that used to hold value because a spreadsheet said so are losing their grip. And in their place, something older is reasserting itself: truth that lives in the physical world.

You can see it in three places.

First, hard money. Bitcoin is not rallying on vibes. It is rallying because it is the only major asset where the supply schedule is not a policy choice. There is no committee that can vote to dilute it. There is no yield curve to manipulate. It is cold, indifferent math, and in a world of made-up numbers, indifference starts to look a lot like honesty.

Second, sports. Drive through any mid-sized American city and you will see massive new sporting complexes going up. Not NFL stadiums. Youth complexes. Travel ball facilities. Indoor training centers with $50 monthly memberships and $3,000 summer tournament fees. The industry has figured out that parents will pay almost anything if you tell them their kid might get a scholarship or go pro. Private equity is pouring in. The local league that used to cost $75 and end with a pizza party is being replaced by a national brand with a recruiting coordinator on staff.

That is the dark side. But the bright side is that sports, at their core, are one of the last arenas where truth is non-negotiable. The ball goes in or it does not. The time on the clock is the time on the clock. You cannot QE your way to a faster 40-yard dash. You cannot suppress the yield on a missed free throw. The scoreboard does not care about your narrative. That is why people keep showing up. Not just to watch, but to participate. The thing that is real will always outlast the thing that was engineered.

Third, the collision. Small colleges are spending like mid-majors on facilities while the return on a degree keeps shrinking. Parents are being sold a dream that math does not support: the odds of a full ride or a pro contract are tiny and getting smaller, while the cost of chasing it is exploding. The same financial logic that hollowed out local newspapers and corner pharmacies is coming for youth sports, and most families will not see it until the bill arrives.

Loop XXI is building for exactly this future. A future where verifiable outcomes matter more than marketing claims. Where cryptographic proof replaces institutional trust. Where the thing you can check for yourself beats the thing you were told to believe.

That synthesis — congestion forecast, recommended send window, fee trajectory with a calibrated confidence score, and RBF viability — is what this tool returns. Built on mempool.space's public API; no node required. Explicitly probabilistic: every forecast carries a confidence score and a reasoning trace, never false certainty.

This is the layer autonomous payment agents will pay for: a timing decision they can't get from free endpoints, at 25 sats a call.

sat/vB is a mempool fee rate - on-chain, not loop-mcp's settlement layer. We route over Lightning; routing fees on a 10-sat invoice are typically sub-sat (1-10 ppm of the payment). The 10-25 sat range is the service fee itself. At today's BTC price, 10 sats is ~$0.001 per call.
