More in-depth. Most fascinating is that ActivityPub and the fediverse are "Made by people, for people" from the ground up.

You might say "But what does that have to do with the technical side?", a fair question. As I see it, it is a huge opportunity to "do tech differently", take a social-first approach where people's needs are central and ultimately accounted for in supportive humane and harmonious technology.

While that seems obvious, it is actually a huge challenge, and we have tons to learn. Our whole hypercapitalist society is tech-first, "tech means progress", and it has pushed us to the brink. Even fediverse did not escape that, being based on FOSS movement and culture, it is dev-led and app-centric.

Add that the AP protocol is incomplete, has huge holes. It is more a protocol framework. Who takes care of healthy evolution and natural growth? Answer is: We all should.

You start by framing the questions as app features. Why not start more vague and fuzzy, relating to the reasons one would be participating on the social network at all..

* The things that interest me the most
* The people I'd like to meet
* The things that motivate me
* That what brings me joy
* The experience other people have on this
* That what relates to how I want to live

That kind of thing, and then drill down from there :)

So often I see people use #Mastodon, where they refer more broadly to #fediverse. And I think "How about all the other fine #microblogging apps other than Mastodon?"

I too think internationalized handles are a good idea. Sarcasm aside, it is not about fairness. That is not the point I raised. People will just never type a handle they are unable to type. Thus the fediverse while becoming more inclusive in one regard, on the other it will fragment. The issue comes up more often in other technology areas. The #ActivityPub Webfinger TF implies a flavor of the #Webfinger open standard. Webfinger is only a small 'moving part' within the AP protocol intrinsics.

A task force focusing more broadly on the cross-cutting concern of "Internationalization and Localization" of the entire protocol suite, might've been a better way to slice related activities.

Nice work! There's an interesting inclusion and diversity angle to this. On one hand it allows anyone to create handles in their own native language, and on the other hand it disallows most people from mentioning these handles. I'd not be able to reproduce a Japanese or Arabic handle easily, without keeping a cheat sheet somewhere, from where I copy/paste those handles. Who will do that in practice? I don't know the extent to which Latin is a common denominator between these languages and regions. Mass adoption might make the fediverse more inclusive, while driving fedizens apart in their own language bubbles. Perhaps there should be an ability to have an inclusive handle, and a Latin fallback for those not able to type the inclusive handle.

The term "server" itself is imho an unfortunate case of a lower-level abstraction (that of the installed base) creeping into a high-level one (that of the unified social network stratum). It is a passed station, but a multi-account server/instance might simply be called a Hub.

I sent a #ThoughtProvoker contrasting Opt-in vs. Opt-out for services that developers launch on our #fediverse.

Thought was that on a #Prosocial web people are fully in control of the services they want to use by opting in, thus providing #consent.

Opt-out is where in many cases de-facto a developer becomes the decider how your content and data is used. To fedizens its often unclear what services interact with their online presence, and in what way. Plus they have to discover the opt-out mechanisms themselves.

My post got an angry reaction from a #fedi developer, who misinterpreted what I said. The devs I know act with the best intentions! Yet some are exasperated with "We can't have nice things with only opt-in".

Full of passionate people who want to improve the world, I am nonetheless presented every morning with 1,000's of huge problems-getting-worse in every area imaginable that these people project to each other. Problem-awareness is one thing. It is needed. But there's precious little uplifting stuff being shared, and ways on how to be part of the solution.

Timelines that are only doom & gloom serve to wear people out, feel extra deflated as the weight of the world is pushed on their shoulders, and they feel powerless to make a real difference.

This while every minute 2 cents contributed to a solution counts! Share more uplifting things, and how other people can participate. It is important, we already know the world burns.

Fediverse might be a place of cocreation and cross-pollination, where our dreams are slowly realized.

First consider how your app is impacting and perhaps invading people's existing social space, that the fediverse spans up for us fedizens. This is our home you are impacting. An article was submitted to HN how #Authorization terminology is a mess and proposed a way to fix it.

Top-level comment started a discussion on the difference between SHOULD and OUGHT TO. The latter expresses a moral imperative.

SHOULD is defined in #RFC2119 which is referenced in all #ActivityPub specs and #FEPs.

Now, there is an April Fool's RFC6919 which defines OUGHT TO. While this RFC is created just for fun, to express all kinds of wriggle room to a spec, which is often the reality in a codebase, the OUGHT TO indicator is not all that bad for actual use in #fediverse specs.

The fediverse is more than cold, hard technology space. It is a place where particular values and principles are held dear, moral imperatives to build better alternatives to social media.

#Fediverse today consists of apps and app platforms. It is entirely app-centric.

Since fediverse (luckily) didn't attract much corporate attention yet, it is dominated by #FOSS culture, where people on the #SocialWeb are all "users" that are dependent on FOSS developers to serve their needs. Every dev focuses on their app features first and #interoperability second, leading to a patchwork of poorly integrated apps, and a janky overall experience. The app delivery model is not much different than Web 2.0.

A paradigm shift is possible, to a #SocialNetwork of apps and services, a service-oriented #fedi. The efforts around the #ActivityPub API can be the enabler of this shift.

In this new paradigm devs introduce solutions to a unified #SocialNetworking space, delivering new services to participants on the network. On top of a robust Protocol Layer they model social use cases in the Data Layer, integrating with services and building blocks already available.

I agree on that, partially. It goes both ways, to the benefit of everyone. The folks at the SWICG are also just volunteering their time as participants in the same developer ecosystem. A bit of giving and a bit of taking is needed.

That said, we have a bottom-up standardization process, not a top-down hyper-formal one that is more appropriate for creating corporate industry standards. And the SWICG tends to the latter, which is imho a flaw and mistake similar to how Solid project operates, and fails to reach their community.

Fediverse evolution is community-driven first and foremost.

Other than that - even though I have thoughts on the current standardization process and the role of the SWICG (see quote) - I don't think your critique of SWICG is fair in this case. The SeekItem is still just an unofficial draft by Evan, as 'random' as anything that happens in the developer ecosystem, and the SWICG is explicitly seeking feedback from the AP developer community to improve these specs so they gain broader buy-in and adoption. In that regard it is no different than proposing a FEP, I guess?

But I understand your point about energy and all that. Am running on low-bat myself in that regard :(

I gather that FEP-fc48: Generic ActivityPub server is likely part of this list. [@Steve_Bate](https://mastodon.social/@Steve_Bate ) in his article on C2S also lists a number of related FEP's.

As for authority. I think at this point there truly are no authoritative bodies driving the fediverse.

In the 3-stage bottom-up standardization process I discussed at the time at SocialHub, the level of authority was highest at the W3C, lowest at individual FOSS projects, with the FEP process inbetween as a place where good practices and protocol mechanisms bubble up from the ecosystem as good candidates for further standardization.

This process in reality doesn't exist. The connections aren't there. The SWICG operates alone, the FEP does too, and so do all the various independent developers when they invent new things.

In that setup I'd say the SWICG has the same level of authority as the FEP Process does, or any other focal point for collab between fedi devs (e.g. code forges, podcasts). Just another party at the grassroots level figuring out best practices.

I agree that ap-next is not a fork, and might have stayed on that website. That said I don't think there's deeper politics to this removal, just that the links on the site are rather arbitrary and in need of good curation. E.g. fedify is nice to mention, but also just but one such project where there are multiple.

The entire online presence of SWICG/SocialCG including the AP.rocks website are a mess that almost seems designed to discourage ecosystem participants.

It saddens me as 3 years ago, when AP.rocks was still considered to be part of SocialHub, I had a whole initiative prepared to once and for all create a great developer portal at this domain name.

This is the premise of Social experience design (SX), in a quite holistic approach.

Scrolling my timeline this morning, like most mornings, I found the black pill, the doom and gloom we project to each other to tell about the state of apocalypse.

Our real bad actors are a tiny minority, but they win and keep winning, because we let them. The majority of us are common everyday people, sharing very similar basic needs. Have aspirations to lead a meaningful life. We want to be involved with positive, uplifting things, follow passions, unleash our creativity.

Software should serve that. Coding is social. We have to learn how to cocreate and create works that leave positive societal imprint. Joyful creation!

Fediverse is full of activists. Awareness-raising. But that's just the tip of the spear. We need pathways to solutions. The shaft gives impetus. We need only follow dreams.

What the Epstein class, the fascists, oligarchs and power brokers, and their sycophants do, is similar to very effective Russian propaganda tactics. Create as many variations of the truth as possible, insert alternative facts and narratives, conspiracy theories, sow chaos everywhere. Wearing people out, have them wade through info overloads of doom & gloom, encounter red meat for internal fights, divide and conquer them. And use the Big Tech platforms and LLM disruption as superweapons. We are overwhelmed, can't deal with it. And that is exactly the point.

It only works if we let them. The real evil actors that are driving all this is but a tiny group. We must realize that.

Now the online world.. that's different. I get offered a spout where I can shout all my social needs undirectional. There's nearly only one mode of communication, and there are no real community boundaries. My messages reach people all of the time who don't want to hear them, and whom I didn't want to include really.

But that's online. We think we figured it all out. That we just have an extra communication line. But actually we have highly flawed primitive communication tools.

Our social bandwidth of effective and efficient social communication, the ability to convey what we want to convey to others, represents a 9600 baud modem.

We are in the stone ages of online social networking still.

Then I walk outside and shitpost about the weather with my neighbors who are also going out the door to their work.

As we discussed before I use different definitions, which I think fit better in how they shape our thinking around designing use cases in support of our social #communication online.

So, once more, I consider..

Social Networking is any direct or indirect human interaction between people.

That includes offline, where we social network for ages. And recently online since the rise of the #internet. We want #offline and #online to extend seamlessly into each other in support of our daily needs.

The crux is, we are still very primitive in learning how to do online social communication well enough. Lots to learn. We underestimate #social online.

#SocialMedia is a subset of #SocialNetworking against this definition. Moreover its an app-centric notion, same as #Microblogging is. And it shows: #fediverse duplicated existing centralized platforms' app functionality.

We want to focus on our modes of communication across different social contexts, and ability to express ourselves.

Still, the question "What is the fediverse" is an unanswered one, that leads not only to confusion, but has direct effect on the evolution of this fedi social networking environment.

Take the europa.eu website, or the Dutch gov, who proudly announce they 'joined the fediverse'. And they make this clear by adding a Mastodon icon to their socials, where Mastodon is a particular brand, a product that is fediverse enabled. And it has a very restrictive domain, the social use cases that this product covers, namely microblogging.

My own use of fediverse is as a simple utility word, same as internet and web. And that is separate from the particular enabling technologies i.e. ActivityPub most prominently.

But positioning "fediverse" to the broader public is hard, esp. when its app-centric. The other day I mentioned perhaps it should be advertised as ActivityPub or even ActivityStreams, where you tap into a Microblog stream, or a Video stream, etc.

It's unpopular subject matter, but there are lots of factors that determine attractiveness for adoption of a particular technology, and the IT sector is much much larger than than the particular open source community one is exposed to on the fediverse. And I think this leads to biases where for people ActivityPub is the obvious value-aligned choics, but the vast majority of devs, even while they love open source, don't share or understand these values in the same way. There's a lot that makes ATProto an attractive choice to them, and where fediverse is lacking.

I don't think it is enough to call for just open source at this point. Big Tech is built on open source and LLMs wouldn't be what they are today without open source.

We need FOSS that (in-the-large, emergent) responsibly contributes to societal progress, and the starting point for that is that proper healthy environments exist to give the extra amount of attention and detail to focus on the entire supply chain and software lifecycle. It is not enough to just do the coding, create the tech, and dump it into society. Externalities must be better addressed.

For all that to be possible the conditions must be created where people can sustainably work on FOSS, eek out a living in it if they want to. Right now FOSS is inherently unsustainable except for the privileged who can spare the time and money to work on it, and a happy few who have a job in it.

Call should not just be "use FOSS" but "adopt FOSS and help sustain responsible FOSS ecosystems".

Like in the responses to your poll it triggered a whole bunch of interesting discussion. Unfortunately all happens on a communication medium where all insights are lost tomorrow (except for those who keep records and archives, I guess :)

I think really this is an "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" kind of thing, which is inherent to how we evolve the app-centric fediverse. We try to hammer all forms of communication into a Microblog design.

The app platform becomes a straightjacket way of doing things as intended by its developer owners, plus a bag of features to allow variations to that for instance owners, so they can deal with a certain set of edge cases.

I'd choose the option "it depends". It is solution-specific. But there needs to be crystal clear mutual expectations and proper management thereof.

Is there any prior experience, I wonder, of open social networks where free culture thrives, and the socio-cultural impact that introduction of monetization schemes has on such environments?

I'm quite worried about how such introduction for fedi may create monetary incentives that attract people for all the wrong reasons, and in ways that harm the current culture of fedi, which sets it apart from mainstream corporate social media.
