Tonight for #monsterdon we're watching "The Guyver" (1991), with Mark Hamill and I'm sure some other people as well. It's an early nineties live action remake of... an anime series? Manga? Both? It is going to be _some kind of thing_, that's for sure.

I finally swapped out the crappy white plastic wire doohickey I've been using to suspend my phone in portrait mode at eye height during #monsterdon for a janky-looking but super secure setup using a bunch of the lightweight camera rigging gear we uhhhhh happen to have lying around. Huge improvement in convenience, but also in rigidity! No more phone bouncing up and down due to keyboard motion.

(there is also a danger to the specific people using the tool, as we've privately discussed, and the risk of which I've personally witnessed being pretty horrifyingly realized; but fortunately, very fortunately, this seems to be an unusual outcome rather than a common case. It's always¹ possible to forge an uphill path. It's possible to write legible Perl, safe shell scripts, and fast Python, too.

I think we both agree that the danger to the craft and industry comes from pairing a tool that rewards and conceals low quality with an outreach effort to get new developers to learn with it.

This morning I was running down the list of things to check before going on a camping trip in a place reputed to be absolutely gorgeous, trying to decide if I should bring my mirrorless camera.

Arguably the Linux kernel put the entire user community in a vulnerable position when it allowed its complexity growth to outstrip its ability to be maintained by a volunteer community. We've all been on borrowed time with it since then.

Forking the kernel to avoid the fallout of it incorporating slop is a pragmatic position, not one stemming from conceptual purity. The Linux kernel has never really been that pure. But the maintenance project did work, and now it may not.

But the direction of the technology is not aimed at getting a whole lot better in a hurry. Training is running out of data, the people being scraped are running out of patience and sharpening their countermeasures (and going on the offensive, metaphorically and physically...), and loans to hucksters are coming due.

Seriously though, my main anecdotally informed position is that slop prototypes really can be extruded quickly, and they can be good enough... if they're built on extremely labour intensive foundations. The only truly unqualified success story I've seen at $JOB has been a fully hands-off implementation of a cryptographic protocol implementation... which has a formal behavioral conformance test suite and a proven-correct-with-formal-methods abstract protocol. (And it still runs about 20× slower / with about a 20× higher power envelope than the traditional implementation, with 4-5× the code volume. But it *does* run, correctly.)

I have not seen anyone successfully cultivate a vibecoded app into a maintained one, or even a debuggable one. But I sure have watched several dozen brilliant people try very hard for the last half year, Monday to Friday, nine to five.

I don't think it's impossible but I am not seeing it happen, and everyone's afraid to ask why.

The suspension clearance of the wheels doesn't make a lot of sense - they should have a lot more vertical clearance than that, and they would definitely benefit from some kind of coverage to prevent easy puncturing - but otherwise they make a certain amount of internal sense. Good job, props team.

Debian (and presumably its derivatives) sets HISTCONTROL=ignoreboth systemwide by default¹ ².

(On the opposite end of the scale, setting HISTTIMEFORMAT to any value at all, including '', causes the shell history file to preserve not just commands but seconds-resolution timestamps of command entry time. Super useful for my purposes and preferences!!)

I love reading through a codebase liberally annotated with comments noting ideas and techniques cribbed from blog posts, textbooks, research papers, personal correspondence.

I feel like a lot of that ends up in pull requests instead of codebase comments now. That's not necessarily a bad thing, except that pull requests tend to be locked inside walled gardens while git repos move the history durably and fluidly.

Anyhow. Just something I really enjoy. Thanks to those who do that. Love it. ❤️

"Espresso" is a squiggly sort of beast, epistemologically speaking, but there is general consensus that you get espresso when you brew coffee under enough pressure to extract non-water-soluble oils and also to emulsify some gases in the brew. Low-pressure methods like Aeropress (0.25-1.5 bar) and moka pots (2-3 bar) can produce intensely flavoured coffee but they fall short of the 4-9 bar pressures that produce "true" espresso.

1. When something is slow, you look carefully at the output of a profiler or a query plan & make measured suggestions about what to improve;

2. When something breaks badly, you gently but insistently ask what & why until you truly know, then the next time similar work is needed you bring up how to avoid doing what broke last time; and

3. When someone lacks info, you make them feel good for learning instead of bad for not knowing;

I have a feeling, not yet filtered into reasonable thoughts & distilled into a proper argument, that the next phase of free software should focus on..:

1. software written by people (as opposed to businesses or their LLM pseudopods),

2. for people (as opposed to "customers" or other businesses),

3. using participatory processes (as opposed to projects like Android that accept no contributions, or have closed bug trackers or mailing lists),

4. emphasizing users learning & changing core code.
