Also to anyone in the know are there any boundaries we should be aware of when documenting protests online in Portugal? I would think sticking to facts, photographic evidence (excluding faces) with permission, and merely documenting schedules of planned activities would be within the boundaries of the law but in 2026 one never knows what the state will consider “terrorism.”

The treatment of peaceful protesters at the hands of police here in Portugal is unconscionable. I’ve seen photos of people with their skulls cracked open. They used dogs - DOGS - to break up protests and they’ve blocked off streets so there’s no way to leave. Find a protest today and show up - especially if you are an immigrant with means. It is the absolute bare minimum we can do to help remedy a situation that we have contributed to, intentionally or not.

I’m also working with some friends to launch an English language-translated news site covering the activities and the disproportionate violence at the hands of police. More to follow. Here’s the thing: America blew this by refusing to regulate these companies, allowing them to run rampant with users’ data, and through using them as back doors to surveil and control other nations. If we had any willpower to regulate their behavior - and that of our own government - this wouldn’t be controversial at all and Europeans would happily use US tech platforms.

AI companies urging the industry to “slow down” are full of shit. If you’ve ever worked at a startup or large tech firm, you know it’s bullshit. These companies are literally incapable of “slowing down.” They exist to make money as rapidly as possible, grow by double digits year over year, and capture more of our time and attention. This is them trying to create a cartel, and protect themselves likely because they know they’re all plateauing and there’s not much they can do beyond what they already do. And that would be fine, in the same way lots of software has been fine for several decades now. I didn’t need my web browser to do much more than it did already in 2006. I didn’t need my search engine to do more than it did in 2001.

But that’s never stopped a product manager or a CEO or a PE financier. They won’t slow down and any claims to this effect are lies.

100%. This is negligence. This is "we're sorry! the computer did it!" It's complete bullshit, and the companies and the individuals who ran these exercises are culpable and - if we had any semblance of a competent government that was not completely captured by industry - should be prosecuted.

I moved my family to Portugal in 2022. It’s the hardest thing we’ve ever done. But there’s not a day that goes by that we aren’t confident it was the right move. And we love our life here even though it’s challenging (Dutch is almost certainly more difficult than Portuguese especially if you know Spanish but it’s the hardest of all the Latin languages and as someone who never spoke a second language and who came here at 40 it’s not easy mode).

That said immigrants have strained the Portuguese system. We’re not the only reason prices have gone up and people can’t afford to live - but we’re part of it. And I struggle with that reality internally every day.

I continue to be blown away by all the features and functionality of recent Nextcloud 📱☁️💻 (npub1rk6…hv4q) releases. Document creation an editing is worlds better, Collectives are super handy and work exactly as you'd expect them to, and talk has built in video conferencing that just works. Honestly surprised at how functional and convenient and nice everything is. It's come a long way since its early days. Honestly, if I can run stable personal projects on this for a few more months I might switch business productivity over.

The only issue I had was that I had to switch to beta builds for the AIO containers because they wouldn't deploy for some reason. Maybe a bug in the version I started with a few months back.

Still can't locate who shared this on my timeline but it's a great, short documentary on life in Portugal before the revolution. No English subtitles but I managed to catch a good deal of it, and even if you just look at the footage it's not hard to figure things out. Worth a watch.
