Thank you, I always appreciate you. They live in Denver, so visiting is a big production, and she exudes this low-level radiation of guilt about how I don’t visit enough, so thinking about going up there is also dread-inducing. It’s sad to say, but her & my stepdad are both just unpleasant people and a real drag to be around. I don’t know how I might navigate her end of life as an only child, and am unclear if I even owe her that, or if I’m just chickening out. I’m obviously suffering from some confusion but I am determined to get it sorted here sooner than later. I’m not willing to go through that any more.

I just got a “what do you want for your birthday?” call from my mother wherein she firstly didn’t listen to me very well when I tried to answer, and then proceeded to yell and curse about all the horrible things in her life- all the injustice the universe has meted out on her- for HALF AN HOUR, and I basically froze. I wanted to say “You can’t call me and yell,” but I couldn’t. 1/2 of me was panicked and the other half of me was resigned, because she obviously paid no attention the other times I have mustered the strength to push back or to hang up, and what’s the use?

It stressed me the fuck out and when she finally deigned to end the call after saying goodbye three times over 10 minutes, I was just, I dunno, defeated. Depressed. I drove to pick up some burgers to go, and all the joy had just been sucked out of me, and I spent the whole drive ruminating how her treating me like that all my life has really fucked me up to the point of costing me so many opportunities, and so many poor choices, and goddammit the 12 steps say we’re not going to regret the past but fuck that’s a tall order at 64 years old.

I’m closer to no contact than I’ve ever been, but I’m held back… because of fear? Guilt that I can’t do that to an 83-year-old?

Fuck this. I need my heart rate down, I need a nice weekend, I want to call my kid, because they know of which I speak. I think I’ll just disappear into my book. Bleh.

What is this garbage? How did it even end up on my shelf? I truly do not know. It has short “answers” to dumb questions like the title that are perhaps semi-factual but rather generalized. There’s a question and answer or two per page and it goes on for 298 pages. After the 5th “Native American legend” in 10 pages, I noped out of this piece of garbage. Life’s too short.

DNF - did not hardly even start. Zero stars, zero fucks given. I am going to recycle it instead of putting it in the LFL and making my whole neighborhood dumber.

2026 Book 11: Chasing New Horizons, Inside The Epic First Mission To Pluto by Alan Stern & David Grinspoon

At first glance, this looks like it could be dry and complicated, but it was a serious page-turner. The narrative spans everything from the nascent idea through getting NASA approval and funding, the design, building, launch and years-long mission to Pluto as well as the actual science behind it. There were a lot more twists and turns than I knew about, despite following the mission pretty closely back 10-15 years ago, and it’s filled with suspense even though we all know the eventual outcome. The authors don’t spare a little editorializing either. They scorn the efforts to demote Pluto from planetary status and make a strong case against the group of planetary scientists who did so - I am firmly in the author’s camp on this.

The success of this mission is the sort of thing that makes me proud to be human, and this book helped me experience that all over again.

2026 book 9: Richard Rohr, Everything Belongs.

I can’t really recommend this. It’s dense and he over-complicates things, which strikes me as all too common with Christian theology. I give him points for his earnest move towards unity with the message of all the world’s religions and he is pretty critical of the Catholic Church, although he is a Catholic. The root of the problem for me is not being able to accept the idea of the divinity of the historical person we/they call Jesus.

It’s a lot of peace, love & universal harmony, which are maybe lessons Christians need, but I’m not finding my route there through his church. 2 stars for effort. ⭐️⭐️

2026 Book 7: David Bowie, The Oral History, by Dylan Jones. 517 pages (!)

This was widely praised in reviews, but while it’s a treasure trove of information and insight, I found it a bit disjointed. It’s made up of snippets of interviews with hundreds of people who knew Bowie, presented in a sort of chronological order, so the narrative voice changes sometimes 2 or 3 times in a page. Still recommend, I’ll give it 3 Blackstars.

Yeah… I’m at my dad’s house, halfway across the country right now, helping him out. He’s got mild dementia, and is also just physically very weak. I’ve been sorting mail, cooking, giving his home caregiver a few days of vacation, mowing (6acres!) trimming, talking to Medicaid, emailing lawyers, and now talking to his neighbors who would like to buy his property. My parent is rapidly becoming my child. I love him and we have had some great talks this week, but my heart is kind of breaking, and the anxiety attacks around all this are really just no fun.

Another thick neurology book- I think this one was mentioned (I won’t say recommended because it was extra-curricular) by my therapist. Good insight into how we create our own reality through interoception, sensory input, and importantly, prediction based on experience and our social environment.

I got a lot out of it, but I’m going to label this don’t read unless you’re deep into the workings of the brain/mind it’s pretty dense.

2026 Book 4: The Nueces River by Margie Crisp. It looks like a coffee table book, but while there are photos and illustrations, it’s really a very thorough look at the entire river from its springs at the southern margins of the Edwards plateau, mile by mile to Nueces Bay near Corpus Christi. She interviews ranchers, has lots of historical background about early settlers and changes to the river’s flow and the surrounding landscape that it feeds, as well of lots of asides about canoeing sections and all the wildlife and plant life she encounters. The further reading alone at the end is about 400 books long. I really enjoyed this trip, because I thought I knew the river pretty well, but this expanded my view drastically. If you’re a Texan and interested in nature writing, I highly recommend.

2026 Book 3: All The Frequent Troubles Of Our Days by Rebecca Donner. Absolutely gut-wrenching, but I stayed riveted. Once in a while I would have to put it down for a minute or two and just breathe. The narrative is a bit scattered as characters come and go and it’s a little difficult to keep up with the names but these people were absolutely heroes.

A must-read though in our times, as fascism rears its ugly head again. I’m left asking myself “How did they/we let this happen?” and “What did they/can I do in the face of it?” Hard questions.

They had a bad sensor reading in the abort system at about -45 minutes, and this is where they had to do an “Is it the thing that the sensor reads, or is it just the sensor that’s sending bad data?” They ran it down pretty quickly and looked at previous data from that sensor, other redundant sensors, and concluded that the thing was fine, it was just the sensor. Might have heard them read through this on tv. This is the sort of work she did in the test phase of all those bazillion parts- dissecting data, writing the procedures
to test the things, and certifying the tests. Erin’s not part of the launch team- Orion hands the vehicle off to NASA and it’s out of their hands once they start stacking in the VAB. Those guys in mission control were basically doing the same thing, live with a fully fueled rocket. Nerves of steel, and they were right. They were able to make the right call because of all the work the test engineers put in during assembly. Erin was in some ways responsible for that data. That was a kinda tense moment, but we are on our way!

2026 Book 2: I went on a tangent after book 1 & wanted some history on the missions of California, and it just so happened that my spouse had boughtten me just the thing on a trip a few years ago, and I forgot. It’s kind of a coffee table book, but does have a good introduction and several pages of text about the history of each mission alongside the photos. Not too deep, but a decent overview.

2026 Book 1: Among The Ruins- Arnold Genthe’s photographs of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. Yeah, it’s a picture book, but I read all the expository text- a bio, timeline of events, and interesting info about the whereabouts of his collection, its decrepit state, and the preservation efforts undertaken to bring this to print. Overall, interesting to me in a specific way because 1. I was born and raised there, and 2. I’m still in the midst of a huge photo scanning and presentation project. The prints themselves are very nicely presented if perhaps a bit dark in the shadow detail. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

mine came out to see the band. He sat with my wife because he knows her, who was sitting with the guitarist’s wife and… her unattached friend. They chatted a bit & he bought her a drink, which caused a couple raised eyebrows, but that’s all.

Last night he came out to see us again, and since my wife didn’t make it, he sat alone at a table a ways off from guitarist’s wife &… unattached friend.

But yeah, old houses… ours was built in 1938, and it still has the breaker box from then, plus the “new” one installed in the 60’s. Starting tomorrow morning, they’re coming to replace all of the above plus the main service outside from the pole. Flak is a tiny label - a one-man operation with a roster of about 10 Austin bands - but he has been going all out getting us in-store appearances, getting the “new music” radio shows to play our singles, and fuck me but people are showing up and the thing is selling. The last 4 gigs we’ve done supporting the record have been a shit-ton of fun. 2 standing ovations from a sold-out Cactus Cafe can go to a guy’s head. 🤪 We played a pretty big room tonight and got a nice encore from the crowd there too. Carey looked like a drug dealer after the gig with the pile of cash from the tip jar on a table in back. 😄

When I was 22, I would have followed that girlfriend to Moab when she moved to be part of a graduate program studying Navajo. I thought my stupid band was more important. Instead I got addicted to cocaine and wasted 6 years flailing.

But if I had done that, I wouldn’t have the children I have now, and I can’t imagine a world without them.

Things turn out for the best, but never in the way you expect them to.
