This week's Surveillance Report is a reminder that privacy failures are not abstract.

Dashlane says attackers obtained fewer than 20 encrypted password vaults after brute-forcing/abusing 2FA enrolment flows. Encrypted vaults are still serious: weak master passwords can become the real failure point once attackers have the vault offline.

The Pentagon has acknowledged that US personnel have been targeted using commercial location data. That turns the data broker industry from a consumer privacy scandal into a national security problem: the same ad-tech surveillance that follows ordinary people can expose soldiers, officials and families.

Europe is accelerating digital sovereignty work through projects like Euro-Office, Nextcloud and Tuta, aiming to reduce dependence on US Big Tech for office, cloud and communications infrastructure.

Meta's AI support chatbot was reportedly abused to hijack high-profile Instagram accounts by changing account access. It shows why AI support systems need strict guardrails, human review and proper authentication boundaries.

Defence bulletin: Carnival, Charter, Ultrahuman, PayTel and Atlas Menu all reported data exposure. Android users should apply the latest security update. WordPress admins should urgently check WP Maps Pro and Kirki. Tor Browser, Mullvad and Proton also have useful privacy/security updates.

Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEz8mlRYWog

#Cybersecurity #Privacy #DigitalRights #DataBrokers #WordPress #OpenSource #SurveillanceReport

A quiet, joyful moment from the wedding morning.

Before the ceremony and the formal parts of the day, there were these little flashes of happiness happening naturally in the room. The kind of moments you cannot really stage, because they come from people feeling comfortable, present, and part of something meaningful.

That is what I love about candid wedding photography. It captures the feeling around the day, not just the event itself.

What kind of moments make a wedding photo feel alive to you?

https://photos.beitmenotyou.online/p/beitmenotyou/966366565918331177

#Photography #WeddingPhotography #Pixelfed #Fediverse #CandidPhotography #WeddingMorning #FamilyPhotography #BeItMeNotYou

A gentle family moment during the wedding morning.

Among the getting ready, the movement, and the little bursts of excitement, there are always quieter moments that say just as much as the big scenes. The wedding morning begins in the soft glow of getting ready.

There is something special about these early moments, before the ceremony, before the full rush of the day, when everyone is still settling into the emotion of what is about to happen. I’ve just published a new post on Hermes AI and Agent, looking at how portable AI can support self hosting, Linux learning, and everyday IT support.

The idea is simple: AI should not take over your machine or quietly make risky changes. It should sit beside you, explain what is happening, help organise your notes, review commands, summarise logs, and help you build reusable troubleshooting workflows.

In my setup, the mini PC becomes the home base for self hosted services and long term notes, while a USB SSD becomes a portable field kit for helping with other machines.

That feels much closer to the original spirit of personal computing: understand your tools, repair your systems, and stay in control.

Would you use a portable AI assistant for self hosting or computer repair?

https://beitmenotyou.online/hermes-ai-and-agent-portable-ai-for-self-hosting-and-it-support/

#AI #HermesAI #SelfHosting #Linux #Homelab #DigitalSovereignty #Privacy #OpenSource #TechFreedom

The UK debate around under-16 social media restrictions is not just about children being online.

That part matters, of course. Children should be protected from harmful platforms, addictive design, and exploitative algorithms.

But the bigger question is this:

Do we really want ordinary adults to hand over passports, driving licences, or biometric data just to access social platforms, games, comment sections, or online communities?

Age verification sounds simple until you realise what it can become: a gatekeeping system for everyday internet access.

Child safety should not become an excuse to normalise digital ID checks across the open web.

How do we protect children without building a surveillance checkpoint for everyone?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znCTwPSPeMc

#Privacy #DigitalRights #OnlineSafety #UKPolitics #AgeVerification #CivilLiberties #FreeSpeech #SelfSovereignty

The UK is edging closer to some form of under 16 social media restriction once the consultation closes on 26 May.

The real concern is not just children’s access. It is the infrastructure needed to enforce it.

If every platform has to prove who is under 16, adults may be pushed into routine ID checks, biometric scans, passport uploads, or third party age assurance just to use ordinary websites.

That is a huge privacy shift.

Protecting young people matters, but the answer should not be normalising digital identity gates across the open web. Better parental controls, digital literacy, privacy respecting design, and stronger enforcement against genuinely harmful platform behaviour would be far less invasive.

Do we want a safer internet, or an internet where everyone has to identify themselves first?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SThOhWf4iWo

#Privacy #DigitalID #OnlineSafety #UKPolitics #SelfSovereignty #FreedomTech

Another reminder that convenience is never neutral.

GOV.UK Chat has launched inside the GOV. The UK app is an AI-powered way to ask questions about government services. That sounds useful until you look at the privacy layer.

The official notice says it uses a unique identifier linked to GOV.UK One Login creates conversation history, analyses usage, retains conversations and linked data for 12 months, and states that collected data may be shared with other government departments, agencies and organisations.

That does not mean everyone should panic. It does mean we should ask why a public information tool needs a login-linked history at all.

AI can make government services easier to use. Still, public sector AI must be held to a higher standard: minimal data, clear deletion, no mission creep, and no quiet normalisation of digital ID.

Would you ask a government AI chatbot sensitive questions?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vF7PVIN10NA

Encrypted DNS is useful, but it is not invisible.

David Bombal's latest demonstration is a good reminder that privacy tools have limits. Pi-hole, Unbound, Cloudflare DNS, Quad9 and browser "Secure DNS" settings can help hide DNS lookups, but they do not automatically stop an ISP or network observer from seeing the websites you connect to.

The weak point is SNI (Server Name Indication). It is part of the early TLS/HTTPS handshake, and unless Encrypted Client Hello is properly supported, it can still reveal the domain you are visiting.

This matters because many people assume that encrypted DNS means private browsing. It does not. It protects one layer. It does not hide everything.

The lesson is not "don't use privacy tools." The lesson is to understand what each tool does, what it does not do, and where metadata still leaks.

What do you use beyond DNS privacy?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-tPCwxdxpY

#Privacy #EncryptedDNS #SelfHosting #CyberSecurity #SNI #DNS #DigitalFreedom #SelfSovereignty

Linux is pushing back on AI slop, and honestly, it matters.

Kernel maintainers are tightening expectations around AI generated security reports: verify the bug, keep it concise, explain impact clearly, and do real human work before dumping noise on maintainers.

There is also movement around Rust in the kernel, ModuleJail for reducing unused module attack surface, Lightroom CC running on Linux through Wine, Vivaldi 8.0’s redesign, Firefox’s upcoming UI refresh, Fedora dropping Deepin packages, and more concern around Bitwarden’s direction.

A busy week, but the bigger theme is clear: Linux is growing up without losing its backbone.

What stood out to you most?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SGqX7rgrEo

#Linux #OpenSource #CyberSecurity #Privacy #FOSS #DigitalSovereignty

      Nostr

The Trump IRS settlement story is one of those moments where the quiet wording matters.

Reports say the deal creates a nearly $1.8 billion "anti-weaponisation" fund linked to Trump dropping his IRS lawsuit over leaked tax returns. Critics say the fund has weak guardrails, limited oversight, and could be used to compensate political allies, donors, or even 6 January defendants.

Reuters also reports the settlement bars the IRS from pursuing audits into Trump, his family, and his companies for past tax years.

LegalEagle's point is blunt: this is not just about one lawsuit. It is about whether public money can be redirected through vague legal machinery while accountability gets pushed out of sight.

When government power becomes a payout pipeline, transparency is not optional.

Should public settlement funds require direct congressional approval and full public reporting?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIBCjzz-bmk

#Privacy #Corruption #Accountability #RuleOfLaw #DigitalRights #SelfSovereignty

Mastodon

Reports say Trump's IRS settlement creates a nearly $1.8bn "anti-weaponisation" fund after he dropped his lawsuit over the leak of his tax returns.

Critics warn the fund has weak guardrails and could pay political allies, donors, or even 6 January defendants.

When public money moves through vague legal machinery, transparency should not be optional.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIBCjzz-bmk

#Accountability #RuleOfLaw #Corruption

Bluesky

Trump's IRS settlement reportedly creates a nearly $1.8bn "anti-weaponisation" fund with weak guardrails.

Critics warn it could pay allies, donors, or 6 January defendants.

Should public money require full transparency?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIBCjzz-bmk

#RuleOfLaw #Accountability

Signal

LegalEagle has covered the Trump IRS settlement, and the reporting around it is seriously concerning.

AP and Reuters report that the deal creates a nearly $1.8 billion "anti-weaponisation" fund after Trump dropped his lawsuit over the leak of his tax returns.

Microsoft Edge has been caught doing something every privacy conscious user should care about.

A researcher found that Edge was decrypting saved passwords and loading them into plain readable memory when the browser started, not just when you actually needed one for a login.

Microsoft first treated this as expected behaviour, because an attacker would already need access to your device or session. But that is exactly the point. If malware, a stolen session, or a compromised machine is already in play, leaving every saved password sitting in memory makes the damage far worse.

Microsoft is now changing Edge so saved passwords are only decrypted when needed, but the bigger lesson remains:

Do not use your browser as your main password manager.
Use a dedicated password manager.
Turn on 2FA.
Use passkeys where possible.
Avoid SMS for security codes if you can.
Do not confuse convenience with protection.

Your browser is for browsing.

A VPN is still useful, but it is not magic.

Wyden’s warning cuts to the heart of the problem: if a VPN hides your real location, government systems may treat that traffic as foreign and push it into looser surveillance rules under FISA 702 or Executive Order 12333.

That does not mean “never use a VPN”. It means understand the tool. A good VPN can hide your IP address from websites, apps, trackers, and dodgy public WiFi. A bad VPN can become another data broker with better branding.

The deeper issue is bigger than VPNs. It is the internet’s surveillance architecture, the third party loophole, and the idea that data loses protection once it passes through someone else’s servers.

Privacy tools matter. So do laws that stop the state buying or collecting its way around your rights.

Do you still trust commercial VPNs, or is it time to rethink the whole privacy stack?

https://odysee.com/@NaomiBrockwell:4/Wyden-VPNs:9

More background:
https://www.wyden.senate.gov/news/press-releases/wyden-padilla-markey-warren-jacobs-and-jayapal-ask-dni-gabbard-to-warn-americans-that-using-vpns-may-cause-them-to-forfeit-their-rights-against-warrantless-surveillance
https://massie.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=395818

#Privacy #VPN #Surveillance #FISA702 #DigitalRights #SelfSovereignty #Encryption

On 19 May, the TAKE IT DOWN Act moved from law to enforcement.

People in the US can now ask covered platforms to remove non consensual intimate imagery, including AI generated sexual deepfakes. Platforms must remove valid reports, plus known identical copies, within 48 hours.

That matters. A fake nude is not just “content”. It is identity theft, sexual abuse, coercion, and a loss of control over your own body online.

The NO FAKES Act pushes the same fight into another area: voice, likeness, image, and digital replicas. It would recognise that your identity should not be harvested, cloned, sold, or used by AI systems without consent.

Both raise hard questions around enforcement and speech, but the principle is simple: consent should travel with your body, your face, your voice, and your creative identity.

Should digital identity rights become a basic part of online safety law?

https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2026/05/ftc-begins-enforcing-take-it-down-act
https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/1367

#Privacy #Deepfakes #AI #DigitalRights #Consent #SelfSovereignty #NOFAKESAct #TakeItDownAct

I’m building Freetafa as a work in progress, and I’d really value your thoughts.

The site is an interactive digital presentation called The Architecture of Autonomy. It explores digital identity, privacy-preserving authentication, passkeys, decentralised systems, and the open web in a way that is meant to feel accessible, visual, and thought-provoking.

It is still evolving, so I’m looking for honest suggestions.

What would you change?
What feels unclear?
What should I add?
Does the flow make sense?
Is there anything that would help make the message stronger?

Have a look here:

https://freetafa.com/

#Privacy #DigitalIdentity #Decentralisation #SelfSovereignty #OpenWeb #Passkeys #Encryption #DigitalFreedom

Most social platforms still work like rented land: your identity, audience, posts, feeds, and moderation all sit inside someone else’s walls.

My new post breaks down AT Protocol, the open framework behind Bluesky, and why its ideas around portable identity, Personal Data Servers, relays, App Views, custom feeds, and modular moderation matter for a freer social web.

It is not perfect. It is not fully decentralised yet. But it asks the right question: what if your social identity belonged to you, not the platform?

Could AT Protocol help move social media away from platform lock-in?

https://beitmenotyou.online/at-protocol-overview/

#ATProtocol #Bluesky #Decentralisation #SelfSovereignty #Privacy #OpenWeb #SocialMedia

NBTV’s latest episode breaks down the Surveillance Accountability Act, a bill introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Lauren Boebert on 23 April 2026 to restore warrant requirements for government searches of Americans’ personal data.

The core point is simple: your money, location, messages, health records and metadata should not become a shortcut around the Fourth Amendment just because a company, broker, or local system holds the data.

The episode also highlights the private right of action, meaning people could sue when government employees violate their constitutional protections.

Privacy is not a niche issue. It is the foundation that lets journalism, protest, dissent and real freedom survive.

Should governments need a warrant before accessing data held by third parties?

https://fountain.fm/episode/inQeOAFgm6M8QpIsd9Py

#Privacy #Surveillance #DigitalRights #FourthAmendment #DataBrokers #SelfSovereignty #FreedomTech

ActivityPub is one of the most important building blocks of the open social web.

My new guide breaks down federation in plain English: how independent servers communicate, why Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Lemmy, WordPress, and others can connect, and why this matters for people who want more control over their online presence.

The big idea is simple: social media does not have to live inside one company’s walled garden. Nostr is one of the most interesting attempts to rebuild social media around user control instead of platform control.

No central server.
No locked account.
No algorithm deciding what you are allowed to see.
Just keys, relays, clients, and a much simpler idea: your identity should belong to you.

I’ve written a new blog post exploring Nostr as a decentralised social protocol, why it matters, and how it fits into the wider fight for privacy, free expression, and digital self-sovereignty.

Could Nostr become part of a healthier social web?

https://beitmenotyou.online/nostr-decentralised-social-protocol/

#Nostr #Decentralisation #Privacy #SelfSovereignty #FreedomTech #OpenWeb

Online privacy and age checks are heading for a collision, but there may be a better way.

This month, the EU highlighted its privacy-focused age-verification system, built on zero-knowledge proofs. The idea is simple: prove you are old enough without handing over your identity, birth date, or personal data.

That feels far more aligned with digital rights than uploading IDs or facial scans to third parties.

Read the link below:
https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/faqs/eu-age-verification-solution

Technical details:
https://ageverification.dev/

Can privacy-preserving verification protect children without normalising digital surveillance?

#Privacy #DigitalRights #SelfSovereignty #Decentralisation #FreedomOfExpression

Apple and Google are finally rolling out end to end encrypted RCS between iPhone and Android.

This matters because the default messenger is where most people actually communicate. For years, cross platform chats often meant falling back to SMS or unencrypted RCS, leaving people less protected unless they deliberately moved to Signal or another encrypted app.

This is a genuine win, but not a privacy finish line. The feature is still rolling out in beta, it needs iOS 26.5, the latest Google Messages, and supported carriers. You should still check for the encrypted lock or label before trusting the chat.

Default encryption is good. User verification, metadata awareness, and independent encrypted apps still matter.

Is this enough to make default messaging trustworthy, or should Signal remain the safer habit?

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/05/victory-end-end-encrypted-rcs-comes-apple-and-android-chats

#Privacy #Encryption #RCS #Android #iPhone #DigitalRights #SelfSovereignty

France’s Linux sovereignty shift is bigger than an operating system swap.

It is about control.

France is moving government computers towards Linux and asking ministries to plan how their software, security, and networks can become less dependent on non-European tech providers.

That matters because digital infrastructure is now public infrastructure. If a government, business, newsroom, community, or individual relies on systems they cannot audit, change, or leave, their freedom depends on someone else’s rules.

Linux is not magic. Migration takes training, support, planning, and patience. But open systems give people and institutions more room to adapt, verify, and build on their own terms.

The bigger lesson is personal, too: check your own dependencies. Your cloud storage, backups, email, website, messaging, documents, and operating system all shape the extent of you control.

Is digital sovereignty only for governments, or should we all be thinking this way?

https://beitmenotyou.online/frances-linux-sovereignty-shift/

#Linux #OpenSource #DigitalSovereignty #Privacy #SelfSovereignty #Decentralisation #FreedomTech

Self-custody is becoming a bigger conversation in Bitcoin, and not just among Bitcoiners.

At Bitcoin 2026, speakers including Joe Kelly and Congressman Nick Begich argued that self-custody should be treated as a civil liberty, linking private keys directly to financial sovereignty and personal freedom.

The argument is simple: if you do not control the keys, you do not fully control the money.

Read link below:
https://bitcoinmagazine.com/news/bitcoin-self-custody-framed-civil-liberty

Should self-custody protections be treated as a basic digital right?

#Bitcoin #SelfCustody #SelfSovereignty #Privacy #Freedom #Decentralisation

Privacy tools are getting more practical.

This month, Dataiku released Kiji Privacy Proxy, an open-source tool that masks personal information before prompts are sent to external AI services like OpenAI or Anthropic.

Instead of handing over emails, phone numbers, or sensitive details, the proxy strips or replaces them locally before handing them over. Self-hosting is not just for homelabs. Governments are starting to get it, too.

This month, FOSS reported that the Dutch government is building code.overheid.nl, a self-hosted Forgejo platform for publishing and developing public-sector open-source software.

The point is simple: if source code is public infrastructure, relying on proprietary platforms outside government control becomes a risk. Open source governance matters more than ever.

This month, the Linux Foundation announced that Linea Stack is moving into vendor-neutral governance under LF Decentralized Trust as “Lineth”. In simple terms, a major piece of decentralised infrastructure is no longer tied to one company.

For anyone who cares about self-sovereignty, open systems, and reducing central points of control, this is worth paying attention to. Decentralisation means more when the infrastructure itself is community governed.

Read link below:
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/press/linea-consortium-becomes-premier-member-of-linux-foundation-decentralized-trust-contributes-linea-stack-as-newest-code-project

Additional context:
https://www.lfdecentralizedtrust.org/blog/announcing-lineth-a-production-grade-zk-rollup-stack-joins-linux-foundation-decentralized-trust

Can technology really be decentralised if the core infrastructure stays under one company’s control?

#Linux #OpenSource #Decentralisation #SelfSovereignty #Privacy #Web3

Authoritarian Finance often hides in plain sight.

OFAC says it sanctioned five people and seven companies operating in Nicaragua's gold sector, including two sons of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

The Treasury says this network helped the Murillo-Ortega regime raise funds, maintain political control, and benefit from activities linked to seized U.S.-owned property.

This is why supply chains matter. Sustainable investing cannot just mean polished branding, climate language, and a clean fund label.

FT Adviser reports that European ESG funds continued financing Kremlin-linked companies and Russian sovereign debt even as Russia prepared for war in Ukraine.

That should force a deeper question: can any investment really be called ethical if it ignores authoritarian power, Corruption, surveillance, and state violence?

ESG without human rights is just reputation management.

What should "sustainable" investing actually exclude?

https://www.ftadviser.com/content/5f6f2f56-d218-46db-98c4-103ab6d47a7a

#ESG #Ukraine #Russia #Investing #HumanRights #SustainableInvesting #Freedom #Geopolitics

Canada's Bill C-22 should worry anyone who uses encrypted messaging, not just Canadians.

EFF says the Bill revives last year's surveillance push, with powers that could pressure digital services to assist lawful access requests, expand metadata retention, and create secrecy around access orders.

That is the danger with "just one backdoor". It never stays local. Once one government normalises access to encrypted communications, others point to it as permission.

Encryption protects ordinary people: families, journalists, activists, abuse survivors, whistleblowers, and anyone who wants private conversations to stay private.

Privacy is not a loophole. The debate around online age verification is growing, especially for anyone who cares about privacy, freedom of expression, and digital rights.

The European Commission is promoting a privacy-preserving age verification system designed to let people prove they are over 18 without revealing personal identity or browsing data. The goal is to improve online safety for minors without creating a surveillance-heavy internet.

Supporters see this as a better alternative to ID uploads, facial scans, or broader tracking systems. Critics argue the implementation still needs careful scrutiny to ensure privacy is genuinely protected.

This could become an important test for whether online safety and privacy can coexist.

Source:
https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/faqs/eu-age-verification-solution

Additional reporting:
https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/eu-urges-fast-rollout-age-verification-app-protect-minors-online-2026-04-29/

Something about the timing of these stories feels off, and I do not think people are wrong for noticing it.

We have scientists reportedly missing or turning up dead, with officials looking for possible links. Utah has become the first US state to target VPN use as part of online age verification rules, and digital rights groups are warning about the privacy risks.

Critics argue the law could pressure websites into broader surveillance, make privacy tools harder to use, and weaken anonymous access to information. Copy Fail is a reminder that Linux security is not just about choosing the right distro. It is about patch discipline.

This is a local privilege escalation flaw, so it does not magically break into a system from the outside. But if an attacker already gets a foothold through a weak app, stolen credentials, a compromised container, or a malicious script, this kind of bug can help them climb to root.

That matters for self hosters, VPS users, Raspberry Pi projects, Docker hosts, Kubernetes nodes, CI runners, and anyone running services exposed to the network.

Patch from official repositories. Avoid random quick fix scripts. Reboot when the kernel update needs it. Your containers only look isolated while the host kernel stays trustworthy.

What is your patch routine for Linux systems?

https://beitmenotyou.online/copy-fail-linux-privilege/

http://2ggk73giu2ipothw7wyt5fuetvnpsfbga45o7zjj45csgb2ekliuslid.onion/copy-fail-linux-privilege/

#Linux #CyberSecurity #SelfHosting #Privacy #OpenSource #DigitalSovereignty

Public USB charging ports are handy, but they also ask you to trust something you cannot see.

That port in an airport, hotel, café, car, train, hospital, or shopping centre might be fine. It might also have been tampered with.

That is where a USB data blocker comes in.

You plug your normal charging cable into the data blocker, then plug the blocker into the USB port. It only allows power to pass through and stops data from passing between the port and your phone.

It is a simple bit of kit, but a useful one, especially when you are away from home and need a charge without giving an unknown socket access to your device.

It is not magic, and it does not replace good phone security, updates, or common sense. But for travel, public charging, and unknown USB ports, it adds a cheap physical layer of protection.

Would you use one when travelling?

https://amzn.eu/d/099HG9uO

#Privacy #Security #CyberSecurity #TravelTech #DigitalSafety #PhoneSecurity #DataProtection #SelfSovereignty

Bitcoin self-custody is increasingly being framed as a civil liberty tied to privacy and sovereignty.

At Bitcoin 2026, speakers argued that self-custody should be protected, while France reportedly dropped plans to require disclosure of self-hosted crypto wallets with balances over €5,000.

Read the link below:
https://bitcoinmagazine.com/news/bitcoin-self-custody-framed-civil-liberty

Should self-custody be treated as a protected right?

#Bitcoin #SelfCustody #Privacy #SelfSovereignty #Freedom

Today, Sir David Attenborough turns 100. For a century, he has helped people see the natural world not as background noise, but as something alive, fragile, beautiful, and deeply connected to us.

His documentaries changed how millions understand wildlife, climate, oceans, forests, and our responsibility to protect them.

Happy 100th birthday, Sir David. Microsoft once called Linux a “cancer.”

Now it talks like a friend of open source, owns GitHub, promotes WSL, pushes Copilot into developer workflows, and is building more of Windows around cloud, AI, telemetry, and managed infrastructure.

That shift is not just culture. It is power.

Open source does not only need code freedom. It needs infrastructure freedom too. If your tools, repositories, operating system, cloud compute, AI assistant, and identity layer all sit inside one corporate ecosystem, how much choice do you really have left?

This video digs into the argument that Microsoft’s “love” for open source was never simple kindness. It was a long game for control over developers, workflows, and the future of computing.

Are we building freely, or just building inside someone else’s cage?

https://youtu.be/0NGdHSvRH9M?is=Wt_3JNOGMRGOFciO

#OpenSource #Linux #Microsoft #GitHub #Copilot #Privacy #DigitalFreedom #SelfSovereignty #Decentralisation #FreeSoftware

Privacy tools are not magic shields. They only work when the projects behind them stay awake, move quickly, and help users patch before a known weakness becomes a real threat.

My new post, Privacy Tools Patch Discipline, looks at recent Tor Browser and Tails updates, the Copy Fail Linux kernel issue, and why using privacy tools also means building better update habits.

Self-sovereignty is not just choosing better tools. This week’s Techlore Surveillance Report is a reminder that privacy is never just one app, one setting, or one update.

CopyFail shows why Linux users need to check their own distro’s security status, not just assume the kernel patch has landed everywhere. Apple’s iOS fix shows how deleted Signal messages could still leave traces through cached notifications. Utah’s VPN law shows how age verification keeps spilling into wider surveillance pressure.

Then there’s Microsoft Edge storing passwords in plaintext in device memory, compromised WordPress plugins, cPanel flaws, breaches at ADT and Vimeo, and supply chain risk around Bitwarden’s CLI.

The positive side? Proton is moving towards post quantum encryption, Mullvad is working around iOS networking limits, and Maryland is pushing back against surveillance pricing.

Digital safety is a stack. Your OS, browser, password manager, phone, VPN, and updates all matter.

What part of your setup would you check first?

https://odysee.com/@techlore:3/copyfail-explained-the-largest-linux:3

#Privacy #Security #Linux #CopyFail #SurveillanceReport #DigitalRights #SelfSovereignty #CyberSecurity #OpenSource #VPN

      Serious Linux kernel alert.

Dirty Frag has now surfaced within a week of Copy Fail, and this one needs immediate attention.

Reports describe Dirty Frag as a local privilege escalation issue that can allow an unprivileged local user to gain root access by abusing kernel memory handling around zero copy paths.

This is not something to treat casually.

The concern is bigger because this was disclosed before most distributions had official patches or CVEs ready. AlmaLinux has testing kernels available, but many users should still be watching their own distro advisories closely.

Do not panic, but do act:

Update only through your official distro channels.
Watch official security advisories.
Do not run random “fix” scripts from social media.
If trusted sources recommend it, check temporary mitigations involving ESP4, ESP6, and RXRPC.
Be extra careful on servers, VPS systems, shared machines, homelabs, Raspberry Pis, and anything exposed to other users.

Copy Fail was already a warning. Dirty Frag is another reminder that kernel updates are not optional housekeeping. They are part of basic digital self defence.

Are you checking official distro advisories before trusting online fixes?

https://youtu.be/Q6gdCTNI4mo?is=zz27VwH7xMy2NiYS

#Linux #CyberSecurity #InfoSec #OpenSource #Kernel #Privacy #SelfHosting #DigitalSecurity

Cloudflare has published a useful breakdown of how it responded to the Copy Fail Linux vulnerability, CVE-2026-31431.

The important bit: this was not just “patch and hope.” They reviewed exposure, validated behavioural detections, hunted for signs of exploitation, rolled out runtime mitigation, and moved patched kernels across their fleet.

They also say there was no customer impact, no customer data at risk, and no service disruption.

For anyone running Linux servers, self-hosted services, containers, CI runners, or shared systems, this is the real lesson: patching matters, but visibility matters too. You need to know what your systems are doing before a crisis lands.

Patch your kernel. Follow your distro’s official advisories. Be careful with random “fix scripts” floating around.

What does your Linux update routine look like right now?

https://blog.cloudflare.com/copy-fail-linux-vulnerability-mitigation/

#Linux #CyberSecurity #Privacy #SelfHosting #OpenSource #DigitalSovereignty #Cloudflare #Security

AI is moving fast, but the safety rails are still being built behind it.

This video argues that we are already in an AI arms race, where labs are pushed to ship faster, compete harder, and hope safety keeps up. That is not a serious long-term plan.

The worrying part is not just smarter chatbots. It is models that can be manipulated, stripped of safeguards, used to find software vulnerabilities, or tested in environments where containment is not guaranteed.

The Mythos case from Anthropic is a useful warning. Even when a company behaves responsibly, the capability jump itself matters. What happens when the next lab is less careful?

We need mandatory safety testing, transparent reporting, proper oversight, and international standards before this gets away from us.

AI safety cannot be left to vibes and press releases.

https://youtu.be/HY930a15Fs8?is=f4dHDI3ltq8b-ol0

What level of AI risk do you think society is actually ready to handle?

#AI #AISafety #TechEthics #DigitalRights #Regulation #CyberSecurity #OpenAI #Anthropic #Google #Technology

A major human rights ruling deserves attention.

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has ruled that Equatoguinean lawyer and activist Anacleto Micha Ndong Nlang is being held arbitrarily and has called for his immediate release.

HRF says he was arrested after filing a complaint against security officials over an earlier kidnapping and torture. He has reportedly not been seen or heard from since March 2024 and is being held incommunicado at Oveng Azem.

This is what authoritarian power looks like: silence the lawyer, bury the complaint, isolate the critic, and hope the world moves on.

It must not move on.

https://hrf.org/latest/hrf-secures-victory-at-the-un-working-group-orders-equatoguinean-lawyer-anacleto-micha-ndong-nlangs-immediate-release/

How do we keep pressure on regimes that disappear critics?

#HumanRights #EquatorialGuinea #FreeAnacleto #Democracy #FreedomOfExpression #RuleOfLaw

The “Copy Fail” Linux vulnerability is becoming one of the biggest open-source security stories this month.

Researchers confirmed the flaw affects most Linux kernels released since 2017 and allows local users to escalate privileges to root access. Security agencies are already warning that active exploitation is happening in the wild.

For self-hosters, VPS operators, homelab users, and privacy-focused Linux users, this is a reminder that self-sovereignty also means maintaining your systems properly.

Open systems provide freedom and control, but they still require regular patching and operational discipline.

Read link below:
https://www.tomshardware.com/software/linux/cisa-flags-actively-exploited-copy-fail-linux-kernel-flaw-enabling-root-takeover-across-major-distros-unpatched-systems-may-remain-vulnerable-to-attack

Additional reading:
https://linuxsecurity.com/features/linux-kernel-copy-fail-container-escape

Are most self-hosted Linux systems actually being patched quickly enough?

#Linux #SelfHosting #CyberSecurity #Privacy #OpenSource #DigitalFreedom #SelfSovereignty

PlayStation is now introducing age verification for UK accounts, and from June 2026, unverified users could lose access to communication, broadcasting and some social features.

That means gaming is becoming another place where online safety laws, Identity checks, and platform controls meet.

The concern is not just one company. It is the direction of travel. More everyday digital spaces are being pushed towards proof of age, proof of Identity, or some third-party check before you can fully participate.

Protecting children matters. So does privacy.

Is this sensible safety, or another step towards normalised ID gates across the internet?

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/mxMmqk36tFA

#PlayStation #Gaming #Privacy #UK #DigitalRights #OnlineSafety #AgeVerification

Linux Mint is at a genuinely interesting turning point.

For years, Mint has been one of the safest recommendations for people moving from Windows to Linux. It is familiar, stable, simple, and friendly.

Now the project is preparing for a more ambitious development path.

According to the Mint team's March 2026 update, Linux Mint will move to a longer development lifecycle, with the next release planned for Christmas 2026. The release is temporarily being called Mint 23 "Alfa, although the team says the final name and versioning are not locked yet.

The big technical change is the installer.

Mint is moving away from Ubiquity and adopting the LMDE live-installer across the main edition. That matters because it brings Mint and LMDE closer together, reduces duplication, and gives the project a more unified foundation.

Current work includes:

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as the package base
Linux Kernel 7.0
Cinnamon 6.7 unstable
CJS 140
A new Wayland-based screensaver
LMDE's live-installer replacing Ubiquity

This feels like Mint trying to keep its beginner-friendly soul while accepting that the Linux desktop is changing quickly.

That is healthy.

Stable does not have to mean frozen. Familiar does not have to mean stuck.

https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=5019

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIxlujxZv9c

#LinuxMint #Linux #OpenSource #DesktopLinux #Cinnamon #LinuxDesktop

Mastodon's 2026 upgrades are a strong reminder that the open social web is not standing still.

Better tools, stronger community features, and a healthier approach to online Identity all matter as more people question closed platforms, algorithmic feeds, and corporate control.

The Fediverse is not perfect, but it is still one of the clearest paths toward a more user-controlled social web.

Are you ready to give Mastodon and the wider Fediverse another look?

https://beitmenotyou.online/mastodons-2026-upgrades/

http://2ggk73giu2ipothw7wyt5fuetvnpsfbga45o7zjj45csgb2ekliuslid.onion/mastodons-2026-upgrades/

#Mastodon #Fediverse #OpenWeb #Decentralisation #DigitalFreedom #SelfSovereignty #Privacy #BeItMeNotYou

Modern TVs are quietly becoming advertising boxes.

Linus calls them "advisions", and honestly, it fits. Many smart TVs now feel less like hardware you own and more like screens built to track viewing habits, push ads, and keep you on a manufacturer-controlled platform.

That is why a so-called "dumb" TV suddenly feels radical again.

The Sceptre 75-inch 4K display is not the best panel on the market. The brightness, HDR performance, and motion handling are all limited. But it also has no smart OS, no built-in apps, no internet requirement, no ad tracking, and no data collection machine sitting behind the menu.

Just a screen.

Plug in what you actually want to use, whether that is an Nvidia Shield, Apple TV, mini PC, games console, or self-hosted media setup, and keep control of the experience yourself.

Would you trade some picture quality for a TV that respects your privacy?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJh72_O4pXE

#Privacy #SmartTV #DigitalFreedom #SelfSovereignty #DataPrivacy #RightToRepair #OpenTech

Leon LaGrey’s GrapheneOS episode is a proper reminder that privacy is not just about which apps you use. It is about the operating system under your fingers.

Modern smartphones are incredible tools, but they have also become tracking devices by default. GrapheneOS challenges that by hardening Android, reducing unnecessary trust, tightening permissions, and giving people more control over what apps can actually do.

The bigger issue here is age verification. Once phones are expected to collect identity or age data at OS level, privacy gets pushed out of the way and surveillance becomes infrastructure.

That is why privacy-first operating systems matter.

Listen to Leon’s episode, then read my piece:

https://odysee.com/@LeonLaGrey:1/Ep.-263-GrapheneOS_-Privacy-Focus-First-Phone!:9

https://beitmenotyou.online/privacy-first-os-battle/

http://2ggk73giu2ipothw7wyt5fuetvnpsfbga45o7zjj45csgb2ekliuslid.onion/privacy-first-os-battle/

#Privacy #GrapheneOS #DigitalPrivacy #SelfSovereignty #DigitalRights #OpenSource #Decentralisation

William Binney warned of a “turnkey totalitarian state”: the machinery of mass surveillance ready for whoever holds power next.

Section 702 is back in the spotlight after Congress kicked the fight forward with a 45 day extension. The danger is not just foreign intelligence. It is warrantless access, backdoor searches, and the normalisation of privacy as something the state can quietly take.

Surveillance powers should never be renewed without real warrants, real transparency, and real limits.

Privacy is not a loophole.

This week’s privacy warning is loud.

Utah has become the first US state, according to EFF, to target VPN use around legally mandated age-verification gates.

That matters because VPNs are not “loopholes.” They are basic privacy and security tools used by journalists, workers, abuse survivors, activists, and ordinary people who simply do not want every click tied to their identity.

At the same time, EFF is also highlighting the bigger pattern: platforms being degraded for profit, ALPR surveillance being hidden from public records, and border surveillance becoming more advanced, more normalised, and harder to spot.

This is why digital rights matter.

Privacy tools should not be treated as suspicious.
Public records should not be closed when surveillance expands.
And the internet should not be reshaped around control while being sold to us as safety.

Where do you think the line should be drawn between safety rules and privacy rights?

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/04/utahs-new-law-regulating-vpns-goes-effect-next-week

https://www.eff.org/event/effecting-change-enshittification

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/04/open-records-laws-reveal-alprs-sprawling-surveillance-now-states-want-block-what

https://www.eff.org/pages/zine-surveillance-technology-us-mexico-border

#Privacy #VPN #DigitalRights #EFF #Surveillance #InternetFreedom #FreeSpeech #SelfSovereignty #Decentralisation

California’s AB 1709 should worry anyone who cares about privacy, free speech, and the future of the open internet.

The bill would block users under 16 from social media platforms and push age verification into the centre of online life. EFF warns this could mean ordinary users being forced towards government ID, biometric checks, or other identity systems just to access the modern public square.

That is not safety. That is identity gating.

Child safety matters. But the answer should be education, parental tools, platform accountability, and healthier digital design, not mass verification systems that weaken anonymity and create new privacy risks.

Should the state decide who gets to speak online?

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/04/act-now-stop-californias-paternalistic-and-privacy-destroying-social-media-ban

#Privacy #FreeSpeech #DigitalRights #AgeVerification #OnlineSafety #Decentralisation #SelfSovereignty

The Linux Foundation’s decentralised trust ecosystem keeps expanding this month, with new members joining projects focused on identity, privacy, digital assets, and open infrastructure.

The bigger picture matters.

Open source trust systems are becoming a serious alternative to closed identity platforms controlled by governments and large corporations.

Projects around decentralised identity, proof of personhood, and privacy-preserving credentials are moving closer to real-world adoption.

For anyone interested in self-sovereignty, this is one of the most important shifts happening right now.

Read the link below:
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/press/lf-decentralized-trust-announces-10-new-members-adds-tokenized-assets-standard-as-a-new-lab

Additional reading:
https://www.lfdecentralizedtrust.org/blog/decentralized-trust-infrastructure-at-lf-a-progress-report

Could decentralised identity eventually replace platform-controlled logins and digital ID systems?

#Linux #OpenSource #Privacy #Decentralisation #SelfSovereignty #DigitalIdentity #Web3

Decentralised social media is no longer sitting quietly in the corner of the internet.

My new post, Decentralised Social Shift, explores why open social networks are becoming increasingly important in 2026. People are getting tired of platform lock-in, algorithmic control, data harvesting, and the feeling that their online identity belongs to someone else.

The Fediverse, Nostr, Bluesky, and other open systems are not perfect. Still, they point towards something healthier: portable identity, community choice, user control, and less dependence on a handful of giant platforms.

This is not just about tech. It is about who gets to shape public conversation online.

What would a more human social web look like to you?

Original:
https://beitmenotyou.online/decentralised-social-shift/

Tor:
http://2ggk73giu2ipothw7wyt5fuetvnpsfbga45o7zjj45csgb2ekliuslid.onion/decentralised-social-shift/

#DecentralisedSocial #Fediverse #Nostr #Bluesky #Privacy #DigitalFreedom #SelfSovereignty #OpenWeb

A major Linux vulnerability this month is a reality check for anyone in self-hosting.

“Copy Fail” (CVE-2026-31431) affects almost every Linux system since 2017. It allows any local user to gain full root access with a small, reliable exploit, and it is already being used in the wild. 0

It was even discovered using AI-assisted scanning, which changes the pace of how fast these flaws are found.

This matters.

Linux, open source, and self-hosting are powerful, but they are not automatically secure. They shift responsibility onto you.

Real self-sovereignty means patching fast, reducing exposure, and actually understanding your stack.

Decentralisation without maintenance is just risk in a different place.

Read link below:
https://www.techradar.com/pro/security/an-hour-of-scan-time-is-all-it-took-copy-fail-flaw-impacts-all-linux-kernels-released-since-2017-so-patch-now-or-face-the-consequences

Are you actively maintaining your systems, or assuming they are safe by default?

#Linux #SelfHosting #Privacy #Security #Decentralisation #DigitalSovereignty #OpenSource

      Big week for Linux.

This Week in Linux covers Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, Fedora 44, Zorin OS 18.1, Trisquel 12, Linux Mint’s longer release cycle, Framework’s new Laptop 13 Pro, and Valve’s new Steam Controller.

What stands out to me is the direction of travel. Ubuntu is leaning into AI, but with a local-first, opt-in approach. Fedora is pushing newer desktop tech and better Windows gaming performance through NTSync. Zorin keeps focusing on people escaping Windows. The framework keeps making repairable, Linux-ready hardware feel normal.

Linux is not just “catching up” anymore. It is becoming the place where choice, repairability, gaming, privacy, and user control actually meet.

Which part of this Linux news week matters most to you?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by87gJcTTzA

#Linux #OpenSource #Fedora #Ubuntu #ZorinOS #LinuxGaming #FrameworkLaptop #SteamController #SelfSovereignty #DigitalFreedom

Ubuntu is moving toward AI, and Linux users are right to pay attention.

My new article, Ubuntu and Local AI, looks at Canonical's plans to bring AI features to Ubuntu while keeping processing local, modular, opt-in, and removable.

That sounds better than the cloud-heavy AI path many big tech platforms are taking. But Linux users do not just want promises. They want control they can verify.

Can you see what is installed?
Can you remove it cleanly?
Can you check permissions?
Can you keep your data on your own device?
Can Ubuntu add AI without weakening the freedom that made people choose Linux in the first place?

This is not just about Ubuntu. It is about the future of personal computing, open source, privacy, and self-sovereignty.

https://beitmenotyou.online/ubuntu-and-local-ai/

Will local AI become a tool for user freedom, or another layer of quiet system control?

#Ubuntu #Linux #LocalAI #OpenSource #Privacy #DigitalFreedom #SelfSovereignty #FreeSoftware

A critical Linux vulnerability disclosed this month is a wake-up call.

If your data sits on someone else’s server, you are trusting their patch speed, their security model, and their priorities. That risk is not theoretical anymore.

At the same time, self-hosting is becoming easier. New tools and plug-and-play systems are lowering the barrier, making it possible to run your own services without deep technical knowledge.

The shift is clear. More people are moving toward owning their infrastructure, not renting it.

Self-hosting is not about perfection. It is about control.

Read link below:
https://selfh.st/weekly/2026-05-01/

Are you still trusting platforms to secure your data, or starting to take that responsibility yourself?

#Linux #SelfHosting #Privacy #Decentralisation #DigitalSovereignty #OpenSource

Bitcoin is showing clear volatility again this month, and it is a reminder of what actually matters.

Recent data shows BTC holding strong above key levels while facing pressure from macro shifts like Federal Reserve changes and ETF flows. Short term uncertainty is back, even with long term confidence still intact.

This is where self-custody becomes more than a talking point. If you rely on third parties, you are exposed to both market swings and platform risk at the same time.

Bitcoin was designed to remove that dependency. Volatility is part of the system, not a flaw.

The question is not whether price moves. It is whether you actually control your Bitcoin.

Read link below:
https://blockchair.com/news/bitcoin-may-rally-ahead-79k-breakout-could-decide--e594727522cbe85f

Are you treating Bitcoin as a speculative asset, or as a tool for sovereignty?

#Bitcoin #SelfCustody #Decentralisation #Privacy #DigitalFreedom #Freedom

Prominence laws sound harmless until you realise what they can actually do.

Dylan Page warns that new UK and EU media rules could pressure platforms like YouTube to prioritise approved legacy media channels over independent creators.

On paper, this is about trusted news, public service broadcasting, and fighting misinformation.

But discovery is power.

If regulators or government-approved systems decide who gets "prominence," then creators are not competing on audience trust, quality, originality, or relevance. They are competing against a managed media shelf.

This matters for anyone who cares about independent journalism, small creators, open platforms, freedom of speech, and the right of viewers to choose what they watch.

The internet should not become television 2.0, with a few approved voices placed at the front and everyone else buried behind the curtain.

Who should decide what rises: viewers, creators, communities, or regulators?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXI2xaV17Ds

#FreeSpeech #DigitalRights #CreatorEconomy #YouTube #IndependentMedia #OpenInternet #UKPolitics #EU #MediaFreedom #Decentralisation

Copy Fail is a nasty reminder that Linux security is not about blind trust.

CVE-2026-31431 turns a tiny 732 byte local exploit into root on major distros by abusing the kernel page cache, AF_ALG and splice(). It is local, not remote, but it matters, especially on shared systems, servers, and containers.

Patch your kernel. Check your distro updates.
