In November 2024, the world watched in astonishment as the Syrian regime rapidly collapsed in the face of the rebel offensive. According to several Israeli sources, Prime Minister Netanyahu was captivated by what the militia led by the jihadist al-Julani had accomplished - the man who would soon become Syria's president under the name Ahmad al-Sharaa. "Al-Julani basically inspired the prime minister to topple the Iranian regime," says a source who took part in the security discussions at the time. "After what happened in Syria, he went to the Mossad and said that to overthrow the Iranian regime, they needed boots on the ground - armed fighters who could ignite unrest."

The inspiration from al-Julani gave birth to the Kurdish plan: arming and training militias in Iraqi Kurdistan and providing air support for their invasion of Iran from the west. Yet even before the Mossad began to concoct this scheme, it raised more than a few eyebrows across the defense establishment. Within the Mossad itself, there was genuine unease.

Syria was a fractured and impoverished country to begin with, several sources point out, and by 2024, after 13 years of war, it was utterly devastated. Comparing the Syrians to the Iranians borders on a loss of touch with reality. Iran, the sources add, is an economic power with a population nearly four times larger — a country of 90 million people, a third of whom are employed directly or indirectly by the government and the security forces.
