#DeltaChat is crazy cool. I'm having a moment here with it since yesterday 💞

Read this if you want to avoid my rambling:

https://blog.feld.me/posts/2025/03/deltachat-is-actually-good-though/

I'd thought it seemed maybe interesting, but the fact it was based on email hit off some assumption I had, this idea that the email infrastructure can't provide security and privacy.

It can, they've done it. Update your assumptions :)

And they've done loads of other things really well - the onboarding is ridiculously easy, I was told to pick a name and an avatar, picked one of each, was waiting for more screens and such like, but... no, we were done, you're in, that's you.

Multiple profiles are baked in, and given great care. You just click to make a new one, pick a name, and it's done. All transparent and obvious.

Etc etc. Just so much care gone into it, I could keep rambling, I haven't hit a single snag. I clicked on the help menu from inside the app, and tons of really nice documentation pops up. Joy.

Oh last one, the desktop client is so light! Running the .deb here, and it snaps into life. I run old machines, and the Signal desktop app hits the system hard, while this is much quicker. My CPU is breathing a sigh of relief. (Just checked as this got me curious... They're both Electron. So I don't know why DC is so much snappier. Hmm. DC is working on a Tauri desktop client, too!)

Trying to convince non-techies in your life to move to #Signal because it's relatively easy to set up, while mumbling quietly to yourself about centralised servers and metadata and that time they added a cryptocurrency, might soon be a thing of the past.

Eh, pls #boost my request to #getfedihired, if you could spare two clicks? 🥺

I've been humming and hawing about posting this, it feels strange, something about generational guilt & working class shame & ... but it's either this or start putting my CV through LLMs to include every buzzword on the listing I'm applying to. I haven't been able to stomach that, even though I presume that's a lot of my competition.

I simply can't get to an interview. Historically, I've done three interviews and got the job each time, because I'm a real human being who is friendly and chatty and presents himself sincerely (or, that's my guess, anyway).

#Christmas miracles appreciated!

In #Ireland with my partner, but we've lived in different places and would move happily. I've a year experience doing an IT support role the last year, but have transitioned to this stuff later than usual.

Before I've done: bartender; bicycle courier for Deliveroo in #Berlin for two years (best job ever); private tutor for five years in #Lyon (mostly piano but also maths, Irish, English, flute, tin whistle); bookies clerk for a short period; a few other odd bits - one highlight was writing reviews for a theatre company.

Oh, very comfortably fluent in #French, pretty fluent in #Irish (my first love), and intermediate #German (which I would love to have a chance to go back speaking and learning).

Tech-wise, it's been mostly on the #Linux / #Emacs / #Lisp side of things. I would happily work on anything that is one or more of challenging, interesting, useful, or moral.

Money doesn't rule me. I want to live with a humane level of comfort, that's all.

CVs and references available, DMs open. Thanks so much for any and all help!

The #ocaml debacle with the ginormous slop #AI / #LLM "contributions" continues! It's round two, already! Oh no. With the same outcome, predictably. This time in the #julia community.

https://discourse.julialang.org/t/ai-generated-enhancements-and-examples-for-staticcompiler-jl/134054/18

The patience of the Julia people is absolutely immense here! I've huge respect for them after reading this (and the Ocaml people, only days ago).

The fundamental issue seems to be that the guy attempting this novel approach to software development thinks the AI "understands" what it's doing. So even if showstopping nonsense in the AI-produced code is pointed out to him, he comes back with - oh well, yeah, the AI gets "lazy", or some other sort of narrative that rationalises the slop, and presumes the "AI" is, by definition, really understanding what's going on, and smart, and capable, and all that.

Will there be no end to this nonsense? Each week the patience of a new set of #FOSS maintainers will be tested? It's Groundhog Day, but with all the quirkiness and charm removed?
