These robots are obviously weapons. They’ve always been obviously weapons. It’s always been pretty clear that it’s only a matter of time until the military deploys them. And US law enforcement too, because they are basically paramilitary forces now.

Boston Dynamics took money from DARPA to develop their humanoid platforms. DARPA sponsored a series of humanoid robot competitions. Do these folks think they’re doing it for pure science? Everyone in the game has always known DARPA is trying to make remote-controlled or autonomous robo-soldiers, and these companies are spending money on prototypes because they want to sell them. I don’t know how it could have been more clear.

#AI appears to subvert this pattern. Despite initial appearances, their output contains no communication beyond the superficial—they *are* nothing more than consumables, shallow and disposable. There is no human to communicate with. Over time they provide no insight into the people living in our era, aside from our overarching vanity.

I sometimes wonder what future archaeologists will think of the artifacts *we* leave behind. Will our debris help our ghosts speak to our future investigators? Or will they find nothing but incoherent noise?

One effect of using LLMs in code that I have readily observed in my own workday is the DDoS effect, where it’s much, MUCH cheaper for various unrelated parties to use LLMs to generate bug reports—and sometimes “proposed solutions”—but it costs much, much more for maintainers to wade through the voluminous reports to figure out which are actually substantial.

There is probably never going to be another opportunity like this to study the impact that shutting down this data center has on disinformation bots. I’m looking forward to reading about how many seemingly US-local conservative accounts are actually sock-puppeted from Russia.

Sure. AI is inevitable. But we invented Do Not Call registries to combat robocallers. And we invented two factor authentication to combat phishing scams. And we invented the spam filter to combat spam. And someday soon, some bright young woman or man will invent a tool to combat the scourge of AI imitation and fraud. That, too, is inevitable. There’s an AI “meeting transcription and summary tool” for video meetings at my workplace that comes with a disclaimer that it should not be used if anyone does not consent.

I never consent.

Last time I said I didn’t want to use the tool in a meeting with a group of people I’m new to meeting, the meeting organizer asked “may I know why?” and I responded “Because I don’t consent,” and gave a blank stare. The organizer was visibly annoyed.

This is a pattern with all these AI tools. Non-consent is perceived as an annoyance. The people refusing to use it are perceived as a problem, not the tool. Consent is an inconvenience, not a right to be respected.

Someone mentioned Victor Papanek on Fedi today, and I’m reminded of his story about the 5 MPH bumper regulation that was proposed in Washington DC in 1972: the regulation said that a 5 MPH collision should not damage lights and other safety equipment. Car manufacturers predictably complained about the rule, claiming that it would add $300–$500 to the cost of each car. Papanek claimed that he could make a compliant bumper in 10 minutes for under $5.

Papanek’s solution was called “the hoagie”: two planks of wood with 60 empty beer cans between them. He attached the contraption to a car and drove it into an office building at 10 MPH and the car sustained no damage.

Papanek’s solution was, of course, not commercially viable. But he did prove the point that such a device was plausible and need not cost a fortune.

Elon’s “woke mind virus” comment is plausibly a *direct* reaction to workers demanding more control of their work conditions.

I did have a “scream at the podcast” moment when JS Tan equated #AI to compiler tools and languages, suggesting that AI merely raised the abstraction at which workers operated; that is a category error. AI does NOT raise levels of abstraction like a compiler; it is a probabilistic transformer that *deletes* the direct transfer of abstraction from language to machine code.

This is (very, very probably) false; you are actually quite predictable. Advertisers know that people look for e.g. swimwear in the summer. You are “people”. OpenAI has way too many monetary commitments that depend on them increasing revenue manyfold, which is never going to happen with customer budgets trending the way they do; and Anthropic is now forced to hike up token rates eight- or tenfold in short order, which will surely cause the majority of corporate subscribers to vastly reduce their AI deployments, and reverting once again to investing in people. Either of these companies stumbling will cause the market to take a critical look at all the data center and silicon contracts that are in place and ask whether any of it will ever be fully executed. And once *that* happens, the dominos will fall.

I’m glad to (finally) see some buyer’s remorse in the corporate ranks about their rapid deployment of #AI, often at the expense of jobs (or so they claim).

Costs are rapidly rising. Software quality is plummeting. Morale is tanking. The workers are getting angry. People are swamped with slop. About the only ones happy with this change are sociopaths who live increasingly solipsistic lives with a sycophantic word extruder (and maybe some jaded senior developers who want to get paid as much as possible while the going is good and no longer care what happens downstream).

I’m hopeful that the end is near. The bubble is deflating. The growth is flatlining. We are finally past the Peak of Inflated Expectations and are now descending into the Trough of Disillusionment. Deployments are getting walked back, people are getting rehired, AI budgets are reduced.

The best time for this to have happened was two years ago. The next best time in now.
