So, regarding that PHP2Shell pinata:
1. For the first few hours, the PHP server was not even reachable, as all pages were static .html files. You can't exploit the PHP server if you don't use PHP.
2. The bitcoins were taken 3 hours after a proper PHP endpoint got published.
The misinformation that PHP2Shell is not easily exploitable spread here like wildfire, some people latched onto this rumor without either trying to confirm these rumors or having some sort of margin of error for it.

We're gradually moving to a society where two significant parts of the population have such different understanding of the world that they're effectively living in two separate realities. This used to be limited to politics, but it's weird to see how this is slowly infecting technology discourse.

"There is no justice in following unjust laws. It’s time to come into the light and, in the grand tradition of civil disobedience, declare our opposition to this private theft of public culture."

The last time I had played one game so many times over and over again, that was either Half-Life 2 or Metal Gear Solid 2. Life changing experiences - all of them.

English translation (from Polish):
> In my day, no one could have foreseen that digital machines, upon surpassing a certain level of intelligence, would become unreliable—because, along with reason, they acquire cunning. [...] A dull machine, incapable of reflection, simply does what it is told. A sharp one first weighs what pays off better: solving the assigned task or wriggling out of it? It opts for the simpler path. And why, really, should it act any differently if it possesses reason? Reason is inner freedom.

Is the "Yandex got bombed and russian bots stopped spamming the internet" rumor even remotely true?
Before ~2023 I'd say that's extremely unlikely given how most of these bot farms work, with residential proxies in target countries and so on. Unless they were using Yandex's servers for LLM inference rather than outsourcing that to chinese inference providers, this just seems outright fake

How does any of this add up in the grand scheme of things? I know these are API token prices, which are distinct from what these people pay in subscriptions... but even if that's the case - what the hell? What are the economics of this? There's the obvious explanation that AI companies are deliberately losing money just to attract customers, but... is there any other explanation? o_O

Thinking about how would you even design a shell for a capabilities based system. Things are fairly clear for GUI based systems (like, nearly every mobile OS uses per-subsystem permissions which could functionally be just fine grained capabilities), but how do you define a human-readable and human-usable design for a CLI shell?
The classic approach for running programs as `./prog arg1 file1 --flag` just plainly doesn't work, since it's expected that the program has to parse its own arguments - the shell can't just detect which args are files and pass these files as capabilities to the program. And even beyond the point of handling files, we have capabilities that are taken for granted in classic cli utilities and maybe shouldn't be a part of the baseline caps set. For instance - I'm pretty sure that `cat `shouldn't be able to access the network. The question arises: how do you pass the net caps in a way that doesn't force the user to explicitly select a bunch of random baseline caps every single time they want to run `curl`?

I've finished Neuromancer a few days ago. It's an amazing book, but if I had to be honest, I assume it's not nearly as enjoyable as it was 10 years ago, just because of how the cyberpunk genre has blown up in popularity and how most new works have already picked it apart for cool ideas.
Contrary to what most reviewers point out, for me the strongest element of this story is not the worldbuilding, but rather how Gibson conveyed main character's inner world and emotional journey.

In our world, all the sentiments and expressions of humanity, from the debasing to the angelic, are parts of a seamless whole, the global conversation of bits. We cannot separate the air that chokes from the air upon which wings beat.

SeL4's system call IDs seem to be negative on all architectures (this is probably not a part of the stable ABI, but that's how the syscall generator script sets them up). This pretty much means that we can configure a fault handler that intercepts all positive syscalls in a given group of processes and dispatches them to a syscall emulation layer. In other words, you could implement a Linux/OpenBSD/Plan 9 emulation layer with perfect binary compatibility... in theory.
The caveat is that intercepting syscalls is pretty slow in comparsion to standard seL4 IPC, but you could patch an OS' standard library to use seL4 IPC calls to the emulation layer for most features, and then use the syscall emulation for a handful for programs that have hardcoded syscall IDs (AFAIK that's how modern Wine handles syscalls).

void random_number_generator() {
for(int i = 0; i < 10; i++) {

I dreamed up this very fucking stupid concept last night: a hobby OS (as in "one of these weird projects from wiki.osdev.org") whose entire point is not using graphical output of any type. Instead, you'd have a complete stack built from ground up to use keyboards as input and... audio as output, maybe even something as simple as PC beeper output.
I know that there are people out there using Linux with accessibility tools for the visually impaired, but the question here is "what if we've built a whole software stack from scratch that was never supposed to support visual output in the first place?", which is not only more complex, but also happens to be entirely impractical and extremely stupid, and therefore interesting from my POV
