@nprofile…mlqn @nprofile…0aul There are "3D mice" that are pressure sensitive, but they're more like joy sticks or track points in function. You can push them forward and back, left and right, up and down, and some also let you "twist" them clockwise and anticlockwise. You normally use them as an augment to the keyboard and mouse instead of replacing one of them.

@nprofile…5dmj I've written an operator! to do a matrix transpose before because I had to move things back and forth between three different coordinates, and I thought it was too busy to keep writing out x.transposed() everywhere. Running an OCR over all of them and sticking the output into an LLM and asking it would probably be the best you could do to bulk process that kind of stuff.

The worst part of dieting is how much you have to think about food. Normally, the extent of my thoughts on food were: "I'm hungry," "what is there to eat," "this looks good," or "this would've been better if…" Those thoughts were in the moment, occurring and resolving naturally, but now I spend so much active thinking about weights and ratios.
Technology does alleviate some of the pain of measuring out 150 grams of eggs at 120 calories per 100 grams to subtract from the allowance of 1800 calories per day, but doing that stuff day after day wears at the soul. Instead of enjoying my time eating a sandwich at lunch, I'm wondering if this 21 grams of mayo was worth 150 calories; if I could've skipped breakfast and gotten 260 calories of chips instead; and what can I get for dinner that'd be less than 720 calories.

I look at Twitter sometimes to peruse the artwork that gets posted there, and after taking the time to specifically look at the "for you" page to see what people are talking about, I don't really see how people can say it has a right lean. Save for the election day, the overwhelming majority of takes have been left leaning and half the right leaning takes only show up because people quote post them trying to make fun of them.
Maybe I'm not giving the torment nexus enough credit on how good it is at homing in on getting a rise out of people, or maybe I'm weird enough (in the true "abnormal" way instead of "alternative culture" way) that it's missed completely on keeping me in "my bubble," but now I'm even more curious about why people are saying the things they are about Twitter.

@nprofile…5dmj I can sort of see what you're saying. I was originally thinking along the lines of:
code -> effect
effect -> desire
desire -> code
where your points are the first and last with the intent prediction being in the middle. It depends on if you consider that a separate category or if it should be included at all on the topic of code.
Now I've got errant thoughts about if you could treat a program and memory snapshot as a logical programming language of some kind in order to define a desired change and generate all code changes that could bring it about.

2025-01-21 20:38:25 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…5dmj How about something like "what ought the program do even if it does not?" I've noticed when I'm investigating a bug I'm not only trying to find where the problem is happening and how the code, as written, works but also trying to infer what it was designed to do regardless if the code follows it or not. It is a meta model of the code, so it might fall outside what you consider a "programmer's 'mental model' of code."

Look at this; notice how despite calling push_back with four different objects, only "A copy construct" will be printed between "Before push_back" and "After push_back."

How are you keeping them? If you're keeping them directly inside the vector than you're probably slicing all your objects. Inheritance based polymorphism only works if you're taking pointers or references to the derived objects or with derived objects have the same size as their ancestor (i.e. no non-static member variables).

@nprofile…5dmj @nprofile…g9h8 Wisdom allows one to know when, where, and how to experiment, I agree. A highly knowledgeable person will have experienced enough Piss & Shit Frameworks to realize they're all fungible between each other and can often have more friction in their use than can be tolerated. I do think a very intelligent person could come to the same conclusion without the experience, but just the little bit of extra experience on top of zero makes things a whole lot easier, 10 * 10 == 1000 * 0.1.

2025-01-19 18:45:13 UTC

@nprofile…5dmj @nprofile…g9h8 I view the mind as being made up of intelligence, knowledge, and wisdom. Intelligence is ones ability to learn, to see patterns and make associations, what IQ tries to quantify. Knowledge is what one knows; it's all the factoids and experiences that can be recalled without thinking. Wisdom is the merging of those two. A wise person is one who has a large bank of knowledge to cite and an aptitude of seeing subtle patterns to pick salient ideas for whatever one is thinking about. Wisdom is how efficient one is at applied thinking.
I do not believe one can improve the fundamental ability of intelligence but one can increase one's knowledge thus increasing one's wisdom. "Brain exercises" show one how to think in order to improve some function of the mind, so they're bits of knowledge optimized at increasing wisdom but are sold as increasing intelligence.
I think you have a similar view to mine. To put your advanced academic study improving your thinking in unrelated topics idea into my system, the academic study increases knowledge but is irrelevant to intelligence. An intelligent person will get more out of studying, he will more likely see a way to tie the topic to a problem he encounters in the future, but his thinking mechanisms will remain unchanged.

@nprofile…uk08 I have no experience with semantic triples, but it seems to be borrowing terms from linguistics. Subject/object are used to describe the syntactic role of their referents. "Target," to me, sounds like a semantic descriptor more akin to patient in the agent/patient pair. "Target" is also a little dubious with some predicates: "the soup tastes good" "the soup" feels like it fits better for the "target" of "tastes" than "good" does.

@nprofile…t054
From what I have read, correct me if I am wrong, it is primarily an optimization when used on functions.
Not really, at least anymore. At most it hints to the compiler to inline, insert the function's instructions wherever it's used, but the compiler is under no obligation from the language to do so. The inline keyword in C++ has evolved to mean that a function is allowed to have multiple definitions among different translation units (files, basically) as long as those definitions are the same. This allows one to write a function definition in a header file without needing it be static, a unique version in every translation unit.
Say I have a static variable in a namespace:
namespace stuff {
uint8_t x = 69;
}
Careful, static is an overloaded term that has different meanings depending on context. It can refer to the storage duration (stuff::x has static storage duration because it belongs to a namespace scope), or linkage (stuff::x has external linkage because it isn't static or const). Usually when people talk about variables or functions being static, they are talking about the use of the static keyword, so one could say you don't have a static variable.
What are some potential DRAWBACKS, if any, to making this inline?
inline isn't really a case of drawbacks and advantages because of its change to "multiple definitions allowed" meaning. There are cases where inline is required (your example were it to appear in a header file included in multiple translation units would need to be inline), cases where inline doesn't make a difference (static inline on a namespace scope variable or function has the same meaning as static), and cases where inline isn't allowed (any block scope variable).
As an aside, you have to reach for compiler specific stuff if you want the "optimization" version of inline. GCC and Clang can use __attribute__((always_inline)). It's unconditional, so it's easy to find this hurts more than helps.

My family put on a music channel that's using AI images /video, and they don't notice at all. This stuff is going to be everywhere without protest beyond from the people online.

@nprofile…5dmj Function graphs are used a lot in reverse engineering. Do you mean something like that? Ghidra can do it, but it works in assembly.

@nprofile…al36 These two? They're a pretty popular pairing in fan art; they even show up a couple of times before the anime started when it was just a mange. They're Legoshi (main character, wolf) and Jack (side character, golden retriever).
It's been almost seven years, so it has a little more staying power, but we'll see in the coming years now that there won't be anymore anime and the manga ended.

I wonder why the Beastars anime was specifically ended a season early instead of just leaving it in limbo to pick it up at a later time. Unless they're doing something dumb like literally "Beastars: Final Season: part 2."

@nprofile…5dmj Pre-seasoned raw meat always has the vibe of slightly out of date, so I'm unsurprised they'd bury it in salt to mask that.
