Why do people love artificial grass so much these days? All of a sudden it's everywhere. 30 years ago the only place you'd see it was tennis courts.

I saw Richard Bishop at the John Curtin Hotel last night. It was over 20 years since he last played in Australia, at the "What Is Music?" festival in 2005. He was amazing.
I took a photo but it mostly shows the backs of people's heads. I thought it was funny that someone in the audience was talking loudly and some ponce told him to shut up. But although Bishop was playing acoustic guitar, he had several amplifiers and was also going through the PA, so it's not like it was soft. It's a pub, not the opera.
Downstairs early in the evening there were lots of people drinking and eating and the place had a nice vibe. It was empty by 10:30 though. Young people these days don't stay up on school nights, I suppose. Or maybe they go clubbing. Wouldn't mind going back just for a beer one day.

My mum asked the staff at Mordialloc Woolworths about yesterday's machete attack, and they told her they're not allowed to talk about it. I can understand why staff might be told not to tell anyone about it while police are investigating.
But I'm annoyed by the lack of follow-up reporting on violent crimes. Every time one of these attacks happens, I scour the internet for months afterwards looking for information about the motive, whether anyone was charged, and what eventually happened in court. I never find anything, unless it was a murder.
I realise there are legal restrictions on reporting some of this information, particularly when minors are involved, but I think some of these restrictions are excessive. And even allowing for these restrictions, I'm frustrated that I hear so much about these crimes when they happen and so little about what happens afterwards. I think it's in the public interest to know what's going on and why. #Melbourne

I've been thinking about the Medicare "hack" by OpenAI agents and I stand with Sam Altman and his tech-bros! My thoughts are:
is it really a "hack" if it's the cybersecurity equivalent of leaving the front door open and walking through it?
given that no private information was revealed, just government statistics that weren't officially public, writing an e-mail to Services Australia was a reasonable way of telling the government. They wrote to publicdisclosures@servicesaustralia.gov.au which is an email address specifically used for reporting vulnerabilities! I heard people on the radio talking incredulously, as if e-mail is an informal and unserious method of communication. Many people seem to have this attitude, like if I want to tell someone something important, I have to use Facebook Messenger or write them a SMS and if I write them an email I must expect to be ignored. WHY?!?#auspol #AI

Early-life sugar restriction causally reduces adult cancer incidence and slows biological aging
Big if true, but I wonder about whether this is actually "causal" and how they could test something like that (I only read the abstract)
#nutrition #food
Excess sugar consumption is implicated in multiple cancers through insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and metabolic reprogramming, yet whether early-life sugar exposure causally shapes long-term cancer risk remains an open question. We exploit the abrupt end of United Kingdom sugar rationing in September 1953 as a natural experiment, analyzing 64,761 UK Biobank participants born 1951–1956. Cohorts whose first 1,000 d of life fell under rationing exhibit dose-dependent reductions in adult cancer incidence: liver/intrahepatic bile duct (IHBD) (hazard ratio 0.31), rectum (HR 0.60), lung (HR 0.59), prostate (HR 0.48), and breast (HR 0.64). We uncover two pathways through which this early-life exposure propagates across the life course. First, a behavioral pathway: Rationed cohorts consume less sugar, eat smaller quantities, and maintain healthier, more diverse diets five decades later, consistent with persistent taste preferences shaped during a critical developmental window. Second, a biological pathway: Rationed cohorts exhibit longer leukocyte telomere length (+0.05 SD, approximately 2.2 fewer years of biological aging) and lower Granzyme B, indicating reduced chronic immune activation. These findings provide causal evidence linking early-life sugar intake to cancer and identify a behavioral pathway, consistent with persistent taste preferences, through which early nutritional environments may shape lifelong disease risk. The results carry direct implications for early-life nutrition and added-sugar policy.

Aussie investment strategy:
1. Buy average well-kept house in capital city, with garden.
2. Demolish it and remove all life. Ensure not even a cockroach survives!
4. Build grotesque McMansion in security compound with fences, electronic gates and security cameras. Surround with a little concrete and/or AstroTurf, to your taste.
5. Auction prestigious residence at premium price.
