In case you want to see the North Carolina A&T students marching to vote and don't want to click LinkedIn, here's a Black newspaper reporting with the embedded video. They had to march for an hour to reach a polling station after the republicans eliminated the one near campus. Watch the video. The young people are fighting for their future. Everyone in their 30's, 40's 50's and 60's need to wake the hell up. https://thegrio.com/2026/10/16/north-carolina-at-unc-greensboro-march-polling-locations/

If you are a fan of Ann Leckie's Radchaai universe, you may want to read RADIANT STAR. The story is not centered on the civil war itself, but on what happens when a military unit sent to annex a distant planet gets trapped there when the intersystem gates go down. The native people and Radchaai struggle to stay alive cut off everything they normally rely on. She still uses all the weird gender names but its a good read.

Scores of really great international films debuted, including some good ones from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. lf you love film keep an eye on your art houses this fall.

#Books #Reading #BlackMastodon #BlackFedi #BlackTwitter I completely forgot I was in the middle of talking about the books I read while recovering from surgery. The following ones are all authors that I’ve read before and enjoyed their works. They are very different from each other, but that’s what makes reading fun. So many authors can take you on a journey you didn’t expect before you picked up their latest offering. Three posts follow. 1/4

P. Djèlí Clarks’s novella THE HAUNTING OF TRAM CAR 015 is a fun read. We are back to 1920’s Cairo after the Jinn have broken through the human/magic border and become established in Cairo. Society benefits from technological advances but there’s a down side to the arrival of ghosts and other miscreants. Ministry agents (like Ghostbusters) gets assigned to solve the tram mystery. He is also the author of the novel A DEAD JINN IN CAIRO. 1/3

I've been stuck in the house recuperating from a hip replacement. I bought 12 books to last me the 6 weeks I'm home bound. Well....2 weeks in and I've finished 6 of the 12 books. If someone ever said to me that there could be TOO much reading time, I would have fought them. But here I am, with too much reading time. We are surely living in a Rod Serling Twilight Zone episode.

The main stream Democratic party needs to wake up and smell the roses. People are tired of their complacency. NYC comes in very similar to DC. https://www.thecityreporter.nyc/2026/06/23/mamdani-election-darializa-chevalier-claire-valdez-brad-lander/
Critics trying to minimize the fact that some moderates won are missing the point. Progressives don't need to win every seat, just enough to outvote the established main streamers who are afraid to fight.

#Voting #DC #RankedChoice #BlackMastodon #BlackFedi #BlackTwitter
Ranked Choice results in tonight. The Democratic Socialists gob smacked the established Dem party. They got 35 of the 48 seats. That's on top of our candidate winning mayoral primary and a progressive to replace Eleanor Holmes Norton. My ward elected a woman labor leader, and Dem Socialist to represent us on the City Council. First time this generation DC voters had an option and we spoke clearly!

Even if you don't live in DC, pay attention to our primary because Trump uses DC to practice what he is going to do to oppress the states. He announced Thursday he didn't like the candidate that was in the lead for the mayor's race (a Black, progressive woman). He threatened to take over the city if we elect her. That is a threat of voter suppression in its purest form. https://wtop.com/dc/2026/06/i-wouldnt-like-it-trump-threatens-dc-takeover-if-janeese-lewis-george-wins-mayors-race/

A reporter rode out there on a bike from NYC. There were few sidewalks, no bike lanes. He had to bike much of it on the highway with very narrow shoulders on the side of the road. When he got there it was hard to find an entrance you could walk into. His conclusion was that it was too dangerous to bike there.

#abolition #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Policing #EricAdams The police are part of the Prison Industrial Complex (PIC) and with any complex infrastructure that has a fixed goal, any effort to reform is usually a quick fix strategy, or not given sufficient funds and time to create meaningful change. When these type of systems are challenged, their very survival depends on them finding ways to subvert the change or work around it. 2/

I wasn't planning to do an abolition thread this week, but the Adams mess and the announcement today of yet ANOTHER investigation into one of his appointee/police cronies, https://gothamist.com/news/city-investigators-seize-cash-from-nyc-sheriffs-office-hours-after-mayor-adams-indicted-on-corruption-charges, gives me an opportunity to remind people why the police cannot be reformed. (i know we are all wondering did Adams appoint anyone who is NOT corrupt?!) 1/

I strongly recommend you read the briefs that were filed with the International Court of Justice so that you can educate yourself on what is happening in that region.

Hezbollah was not involved in the Oct 7th attack. Don't conflate the two organizations. They are different, they have different functions and agendas. Peace can be achieved in the region if Israel goes back to the 2 state solution that was proposed before it assassinated Rabin for agreeing to the Oslo Accords. Peace is achievable without ongoing slaughtering of innocent civilians which is a war crime and crime against humanity.

But Netanyahu wants it badly. How long are other countries supposed to exercise restraint in the face of aggression from Israel?

#Abolition #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #BLM #TransGender #Allyship #LBGTQ+ After some speechifying we marched to the Supreme Court building, and then onto the Heritage Foundation with a big “FUCK PROJECT 2025,” banner. And there in front of the headquarters the group formed a dance line, complete with a DJ! Just like that a party happened with queerness on full display in front of the Heritage Foundation. Some of their staff went on the roof and just stared. 5/7

I recognized most of the main stream speakers and organizations but I realized I didn’t know any of the folks on the stage from the trans community. They clearly were icons, celebs and activists well known in that community but I didn’t know any of them. On the surface that looks fine because I am neither trans nor queer, but as the day went on, the fact that I didn’t know them bothered me. What kind of ally was I? 4/7

#Abolition #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #BLM #TransGender #Allyship #LBGTQ+ I was first struck by how upbeat the gathering was. For a little while I was looking for a word to describe what I was seeing….it came to me after a bit. The word was JOY. Yes, the topics were serious, but the crowd was joyful, feeling safe, and comfortable in who they were and the life choices they made, feeling free, and demanding the right to have their genders and reproductive choices protected. 3/7

#Abolition #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #BLM #TransGender #Allyship #LBGTQ+ I’ve always been a part of groups who were allied with the queer movement. They always are included in our causes because that community, particularly trans women are among the most marginalized and vulnerable groups out here in this country. But this event was specifically centered around the trans and queer community. As the day developed I realized I had never been to a march that was centered on that community. 2/7

I want to discuss abolition in the context of grassroots allyship. This weekend the first Gender Independence march was held in Washington, DC. A group I support was a local group providing allyship and logistical support. The march was organized mainly for trans people and the queer community but of course many allies were there; the abortion rights folks, the Women’s march and of course various BLM groups. 1/7

The Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management at Harvard announced their Fall 2024 speaker schedule. They are examining the intersection of health and incarceration. This series is always excellent, and its not just theoretical. They have some abolitionists in the mix who highlight real life impacts and usually propose some solutions. Check their website for dates and speakers. Starts Sept 18th. https://www.hks.harvard.edu/centers/wiener/programs/criminaljustice/news-events/diagnosis-of-incarceration

Recently the kora master Toumani Diabate passed away. Another great kora player is Ballake Sissoko whose work I have posted from time to time. Recently, he teamed up with a cello player and they made some music together! (My grandkid and my daughter play cello so I'm all over this) Here's Sissoko and Vincent Segal with "Musique de Nuit." Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajLfTWzFjY8

This spending by Sasse is a prime example of how Republicans and other brown nosers appointed by DeSantis kill educational quality. Tenured faculty are pushed out and not replaced but "consultants" grow at a phenomenal rate. Governance by consultants. This was our old dean's method at the law school. Now she is president of Barnard. Just waiting on the revelations which are sure to come out there next year. Oh and these people repress dissent as well.

EVeryone must pay attention to all the campaigns , not just the ones at the top. AiPAC has now eliminated two progressing representatives by pouring millions into their opponents' campaigns. Yeah y'all want Harris/Waltz but do you want another crippled presidency where the President cannot move the agenda forward because she doesn't have enough House and Senate votes?

#Abolition #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #GunViolence Here’s the link to the story in The Gothamist. When you read it, ask yourself if the city is getting its money’s worth from predictive policing software, and whether it's benefiting these nine neighborhoods at all. 7/7

#Abolition #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #GunViolence The police can’t and won’t work towards building safety. They are reactive only. But we know that no one in those nine areas wants the violence to continue. And they can’t all move someplace else. The problem has to be tackled by the community listening to what everyone, including the rival groups, think safety looks like. In an ideal society the city would help. That's not going to happen. We are the only ones who can keep us safe. 6/7

#Abolition #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #GunViolence Here’s how reform efforts on transparency can help. Community led violence interrupters now have concrete data. They can concentrate on talking to the people in those nine areas, which I am certain they are already doing. Who is talking to those two rival groups? What does safety look like to them? What would they need to see in place to eliminate the need to shoot others they think are threatening their safety? 5/7

#Abolition #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #GunViolence In all of these communities housing is inadequate, schools are under resourced, there aren’t sufficient employment opportunities, and nothing for youth to do. In one neighborhood the majority of people killed or shooters are youth between 16 and 20 and they are members of two rival groups. One woman reported 5 people from her building were shot – 3 fatally. Can you image the amount of trauma these residents are carrying? 4/7

#Abolition #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #GunViolence One expert stated that 7 of the top 10 precincts with gun violence were in the top ten for over 30 years! That begs the question – what is the city and the police doing with all that money that is going to those precincts. More money and more cops haven’t put a dent in the problem. A closer look at the data suggests why. Many of the 9 blocks are around or adjacent to housing projects. Intentional divestment happens in these communities. 3/7

The study, based on analyzing police data now made available to the public (transparency). The Gothamist identified 9 blocks where 10 or more people were fatally shot during the time period. Just 4% of New York City’s 120,000 blocks account for nearly all of the city’s shootings, according to the data. Even more interestingly, some of those blocks had generational violence meaning the same blocks were sites of gun violence over decades. 2/7

#Abolition #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #GunViolence Gun Violence is a major issue for grassroots groups trying to build strategies for community safety. This is an area where transparency and harm reduction (police reform) can be used to help shape approaches to community led safety. The Gothamist published a report on where gun violence was happening in NY between 2020 and now. Despite the narrative that violence is rampant in NY, the areas of gun violence were localized and specific. 1/7

Thanks to everyone who followed me over to the new server and to all new people. For the new people: I post mainly about matters relevant to communities of color, particularly Black folks. I post about abolition, what it is and why it’s needed. I post on African music and cultural events in the DC/NY corridor. I’m a lawyer and retired law prof. I do pay attention to notable trials. I don’t do free lifting for white folks who can look up things on the internet.
