Local government voting; I pulled two voting slips out of the envelope, one for councillors and the other for mayor I assumed. Filled them in, returned them.
Just figured out, the mayor slip was folded in half - I actually voted for deputy mayor and didn't look at the other side of the slip. So I never voted for mayor.
Why would you have two slips with one double-sided, rather than three?

my issue is with the constant framing that 1) this is a problem with EVs and 2) this is a problem with Chinese things.
It's a problem with everything - not just EVs, not just cars, but phones, TVs, you name it. And it's a problem with products from everywhere.
It's the framing of *you're at risk if you buy a Chinese EV* (but your iPhone is fine because Apple is trustworthy) that's not helpful.

I think this is my main objection too, and I often use the analogy of spreadsheets with people I talk to who don't program.
Imagine if Microsoft Excel randomly calculated cell values wrong, 15% of the time. Formulas sometimes didn't work as expected. You make a reference to cell A15 but Excel uses cell A150 instead. It wouldn't be fit for purpose, you wouldn't buy it.
But if you call the same thing "Copilot" it's amazing, and if you don't like using it you're not keeping up with the future!

2026-04-23 06:37:25 UTC

Confessional rant incoming;
I spent a significant amount of the last two days messing around with Copilot (as recommended and encouraged by my employer), and the sum total is that I have been gaslit for about 6 hours and have learned very little of use. I really think I might post the logs somewhere, except they are very tedious and boring.
Broadly; yesterday, I have a very large (~168gb per file) spatial data-cube I want to do some calculations on. Too large to fit in memory, and the processing involves time-lags which means I really need to look at each cell independently. I wanted to make an "empty" template copy of that dataset so I could place the calculated results into it, cell by cell, hopefully in a way that might work in parallel.
Cue: several hours of:
"Do this..."
Yeah that didn't work because of X
"Oh you're totally right, very perceptive of you, you understand why that didn't work. You need to do THIS."
Yeah that made things worse, now this is broken.
"Good catch! That never would have worked and here's why. You need to do this instead."
...Eventually it concluded, logically enough, that it might be useful instead to output a bunch of individual files, each representing the time-series for one cell. That way I can run each cell (or a group of them) in parallel, and then merge all those cell files back into a cube at the end. Great. Copilot said this was "Recommended, typical, HPC-safe way to do this". Cool.
Today; Okay, how do I use cdo, or gdal, or R, to merge all these thousands of single-cell files back into a data-cube that has the dimensions/metadata etc. of the input variables?
Repeat of yesterday:
"Do this"
Yeah nope.
"Of course, that was a bad choice, do this instead"
Nah, it's fucked mate.
"Well obviously, but good news, all you need to do is this."
Nah.
"Fair enough, but I have a simple solution, give this a try".
...
The ultimate conclusion (which I don't know if I believe yet) is that no spatial tools like cdo or gdal are capable of really dealing with a "raster" that is just a single 1x1 cell, and if only I chunked things into anything larger than that, 2x2 or 1x1500, it would all be fine.
I haven't tested this theory yet, and there are a few reasons it would not be a great way to do things, but I'm done. This was really not productive, I'm sure I churned through more computing resources having this conversation than my HPC processing of the actual data will use. I'm sure some chucklehead will say "Well it would have worked if you had used Claude" or something, but that's kind of not the point. We are being pushed to use this *specific tool*, we are wasting a bunch of money on this *specific tool* and being told it will make our work easier and more efficient. It's bullshit.

I think an analogy with the invention of spell checkers is kind of useful. Spell checkers are good! When they were added to word processors, they were legitimately great! Not perfect, but a good addition to the software you're using.
Now imagine if spell checkers required a subscription to work, to pay for the insane energy and warehouses full of processors to run them. And imagine if, once spell checkers came out, it was declared that we simply didn't need to teach kids to spell anymore, since spell checkers only cost $15 a month.

2025-04-26 23:05:09 UTC

I need to be very clear, that the push towards "vibe coding" - that is, deliberately deskilling people - is because AI code assistants are an (increasingly expensive) subscription service.
If you know how to code, you can just write Python, C, Java, R, PHP, whatever for free and make things. You may not own the tools of production, but at least you're not renting them.
If you have been deskilled so you only know how to vibe code, you will be paying for that privilege forever.
This also goes, by the way, for researchers who are starting to be convinced they don't need to learn how to be scientists anymore, because "the AI" can just do the science for them. Nope.

It's always disheartening when you see people you hugely respect and who contributed greatly to the tools you use to get work done every day, start talking about how Markov chains are their friendly smart buddies.

Be us, in hotel room in Melbourne, browsing comedy festival shows on phone, discussing how we would like to see Nish Kumar, but his show tonight is sold out.
Leave room to grab some dinner. Get into lift. Nish Kumar is in the lift.

Last year I tried to use an image gen AI for some legitimate work - generating some stand-in images for a web tool (that would eventually be replaced by photos). Pictures of various aspects of a garden; green grass, dead grass, shrubs, vines on a wall etc.
The AI insisted on inserting a garden gnome in every one. The more I told it NO GARDEN GNONES, the more it added. https://mastodo.neoliber.al/@Legit_Spaghetti/114321751903285137

How might one convert a Wordpress site into a static website? I'm guessing maybe some fancy deployment of recursive wget? Maybe?

I don't know, I don't really "support brands", they can do fine without my support. What I do do is spend my money on products that meet my specifications, and Tesla's, where the car company can track your car and look through its cameras, and where the doors lock you in and can't be unlocked if there's a fire, just aren't up to scratch 🤷‍♂️

Advice request: Say I wanted to run some kind of multi user online file storage/sharing system - think Dropbox, but hosted myself, using something like OwnCloud I'm assuming. What are some hosting providers that would provide cheap *space* for such a service - and I'm talking a couple of TB of files, probably?
(For those in the know, looking for something to serve the same purpose as the now dead Cloudstor service for a geographically dispersed research group).

It's a constant annoyance to me that my phone, on my home internet connection, can effortlessly stream high bandwidth video from YouTube or Netflix - but constantly pauses/buffers on much lower bandwidth internet radio. I'm thinking maybe it's got something to do with background app/battery saving stuff; with video I have the screen on and the app active, with radio I don't.

Now I'm not a "marketing" "guru" but I think maybe throwing away the "Office" brand your company has been known for for decades and replacing it with the name of a product that everyone hates and that is losing massive amounts of money, is a tad silly.

Microsoft renaming their entire office app "Copilot" so my phone now says depraved things like "Would you like to open this PDF in Copilot?" is going to send me full The Joker
