As the Arctic warms and tundra thaws, minerals long trapped in frozen soil are leaching into rivers, turning them orange and acidic. A study from northern Alaska found “rusting” waters to be more metallic and acidic than drainage from metal mines. Read more on E360 →

There is an alternative to climate breakdown, political extremism, and economic tensions.
A set of bold policy proposals, including hefty wealth taxes on billionaires, sharp reductions in working hours, a change in diets and a shift of investment from materially intense sectors, such as industry and mining, to education and health.
If these and other measures are taken the incomes of 89% of the world’s population would double by 2100 and global heating would be kept below 2C (3.6F) over the preindustrial average.
This vision provides a positive alternative to the grim projections from far-right techno extractivists, nationalists and billionaires who claim the future will inevitably bring more fossil fuels, climate disruption and inequality.

5.5 tonnes per hour is the amount of methane emitted by a single oil and gas site in the United States — equivalent to running about a million SUVs — according to an analysis that names and shames the worst methane leakers in the world.
The super-polluting plumes from oil and gas facilities have a colossal heating impact on the climate but often result from poor maintenance and can be simple to fix.
It is "maddening" that such easy action to fight the climate crisis is not being taken. People should be angry.
Stopping the leaks can even be free, given that captured gas can be sold – methane is the "natural gas" that fires power stations.

Healthier soil retains more water during droughts, and it’s less likely to erode during heavy storms. If we remember those times and places — and there are so many — where people have behaved magnificently, it energizes us to act, and raises at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. Rachel Carson, author of "Silent Spring" published in 1962. The book documented the environmental harm caused by the indiscriminate use of DDT, a pesticide used by soldiers during World War II. Carson accused the chemical industry of spreading disinformation, and public officials of accepting the industry's marketing claims unquestioningly.
The book was met with fierce opposition by chemical companies, but it swayed public opinion and led to a reversal in US pesticide policy, a nationwide ban on DDT for agricultural uses, and an environmental movement that led to the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency.

"CO2 can take hundreds of thousands of years to be fully removed from the atmosphere by natural processes following its emission... Scientists say that even if CO2 emissions were to be reduced to net zero, global temperatures would begin to stabilize, though not fall substantially."

"It is my genuine belief that the only way we will be able to avoid the worst consequences of this emerging existential crisis is if we create a critical mass of people who demand the changes required. For that to happen, we need to rapidly spread awareness, because the general public still lacks much of the basic knowledge that is necessary to understand the dire situation we are in. My wish is to be part of the effort to change that."

A quick heads up: Filmmaker Ken Burns has released his latest documentary on Leonardo da Vinci. In two 2-hour parts, the film offers a thorough and engrossing biography of the 15th-century polymath.
Currently airing on PBS, the film can be streamed online through December 17th.

Ah, I responded to your first post, before I saw n=5. So we agree as far as the other ships redshifting into nothingness. Though here (in n=5) you continued with:
"As he becomes close to the event horizon himself, do their images get brighter and less redshifted, or not? What happens after he crosses the horizon? Can he see them better then?"
I think as he approaches they would not get brighter because they are also continuing toward the event horizon in the same (or similar time dilated) reference frame.
Upon entering the zone where all EM is being pulled into the whirlpool-like gravity well, light no longer escapes. Nothing is visible after that.
When he crosses he ceases to exist as well due to extreme gravity. He wouldn't see anything, not because all light is subsumed but because the observer's atomic structure is converted into fundamental particles under irresistible gravity.
But who can say for sure...

Interesting thought experiment.
I think they wouldn't see anything "ahead" since light is no longer moving outward. Prior to the event horizon they'd see the other ships redshift and fade into blackness as they crossed over one by one... and very slowly due to relativistic time dilation.

The #Pando forest is one of world’s oldest beings. DNA from "Pando" — a vast forest made up of a single root system sprouting nearly 50,000 cloned quaking aspen trees — seems to confirm that it is one of the oldest organisms on Earth. Researchers sequenced hundreds of samples from the Populus tremuloides and found that it is between 16,000 and 80,000 years old. They were also able to track patterns of genetic variation throughout the tree, offering clues about how it has adapted and evolved over the course of its extensive lifetime.

With record-high Mediterranean temperatures and a year's worth of rain falling in mere hours, Spain has been devastated by the weather phenomenon known as DANA.
Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos (DANA) is a Spanish phrase that translates to isolated depression at high levels. It was the most severe DANA recorded in the 21st century.

In The Climate Book, Greta Thunberg has gathered the wisdom of over one hundred experts — geophysicists, oceanographers and meteorologists; engineers, economists and mathematicians; historians, philosophers and Indigenous leaders — to equip us all with the knowledge we need to combat climate disaster. Alongside them, she shares her own stories of demonstrating and uncovering greenwashing around the world, revealing how much we have been kept in the dark. A compelling and comprehensive exploration of the climate crisis that grips our planet.

"Each week, people in the U.S. eat the equivalent of three burgers' worth of beef. If people in the U.S. and other heavy meat-eating countries could cut back their beef consumption down to just 1.5 burgers a week, it would actually make it possible to feed 10 billion people by 2050 without any further deforestation."

Telling people that most scientists agree that human-caused climate change is happening can help to nudge their thinking in that direction.
Personal conversations help. Start with things they care about, such as food prices, national security or fishing. There is a climate-change angle to almost everything.
The next step is to listen carefully and connect the dots between a person's experience and local climate information.
For an enduring shift, the message needs to be personally relevant. That’s because “climate change is affecting the people and places and things that we love right now,” says Anthony Leiserowitz, the director of the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.
"It has taken me about 20 years of slow, careful, loving, supportive conversations to change their mind."

"Indigenous peoples depend on forests for subsistence farming and grazing animals. High-income countries contribute the most to climate change, yet tree-planting initiatives risk unfairly displacing Indigenous people in low-income countries."
"People should not just plant trees but 'grow' them. This means knowing what species suit an area and how they are connected to the lives of the local people and wildlife. Growers should make use of local knowledge and spend time and money caring for young trees."
