My 12y old is fascinated by retro tech.
Playing with cassette tapes and stuff all the time.
Trades messages and dumb little python/scratch programs with his buddies at school with actual 3.5" floppies.
Burning CD's for the lolz.
They learned about encryption in a "spy school" class, and they joke about how it is secret in the sense that almost nobody can read their messages because they don't have the tech. A fun security through obscurity angle.
Kids these days...

ICE still very much out and about in my neck of the woods. Sure seems like that announcement that the surge was ending was just another lie.
Good thing the media didn't uncritically regurgitate it so that people sheltering in place wouldn't come out prematurely. Oh wait...
That whole "purpose of a thing is what it does." Who needs official state propaganda when capitalist media behaves like this.

In our neighborhood today a teen was just taken from his car. Groceries left in the front seat. Probably he was just out shopping for his family who are sheltering at home.
We've been seeing this at the grocery store, young kids doing the shopping with their parents on a video call. The assumption maybe is the kids are natural born citizens and definitely not criminals or whatever so ICE would leave them alone.
I case you were wondering, ICE is still terrorizing #Minneapolis

This is breaking my heart right now 💔
We have tried to really limit the news we share with our kids, especially the scarier stuff, but our 6 year old knows enough of what is going on to be able to come up with this sign on her own, she made it for me to take to a protest.

@nprofile…x9q9 Not just protesters. Completely warranted to be carrying a bunch of this if you are just kind of going to be out where you might encounter ICE, which is pretty much anywhere in the twin cities at this point.
Absurd, literal warzone advice, but is what it is.

@nprofile…4kae We are helping stand out at school in our neigborhood. The report from faculty is that members of six families were snatched this morning. Kids are super distracted - the ones who are even showing up, and teachers and faculty are too.
Standing there with a whistle just in case feels silly. "We can't solve this from here" is absolutely correct.

The liearrhea coming out of the mouths of Trump and Noem is disgusting. ICE executed that women in Minneapolis this morning. I've seen video I wish I hadn't
Trump needs to be removed. Along with his whole corrupt administration. I hope a dog bites Noem in her stupid fake face. Fuck ICE

Curious how @nprofile…s37t and their upcoming #cosmic DE might leverage this. Or if they even need to? maybe they skip past the experiments phase since so much of what they are doing is in #Rust already anyway?

@nprofile…5q8k Did a quick text search for "capital" and "land value tax"; neither mentioned.
I wondered if it arrived at any similar ideas as Henry George who in "Progress and Poverty" made the case that land being treated as capital/property is a root of a lot of this sort of issue, and proposed the land value tax as a potential solution.

A crucial smartphone app is a good map.
Organic Maps has been my go to map for the last few months - a pretty good alternative to the OS bundled spyware map.
A few UX quibbles or feature sacrifices you might have to be willing to make, but in my mind at least, totally worth the tradeoffs

Know someone who has taken to using LLM to fill in pull request descriptions. Sometimes they are just ... okay. Other times they are 100s of lines of prose to describe dozens of lines of code changes.
And TBH I am not reading these massive PR descriptions he couldn't be bothered to write himself, and I'd be surprised if he even read them himself
In much the same way I glace over "art" that is machine generated. Not worth my attention. It communicates nothing of value
