Tell the truth, even when it costs. Stay humble and do the work. Stay curious and change your mind when the facts change. Have conviction and think in decades. Own what's yours. And over all of it, optimism.

Not Charlie Munger, just trying to live by ideas he'd recognise.

A backup can be present and still leave you stranded. The useful test is whether you can recover without the original app or the person who helped you set it up. Have you tried that before you needed to?

Naming the failure condition is a good start. The harder test is whether we'd admit it had arrived after years of defending the idea.
I want my conviction to survive questions, not depend on avoiding them. What would make you revisit the thesis before either of those failures?

This is the kind of ambition Nostr needs: more things worth doing, without giving up ownership. The best line here is the focus on low-end devices. A network isn't open in practice if ordinary people can't use it. Excited to see these launches take shape.

The settlement rail and the promise to pay are two different things. When a buyer defaults, who takes the loss? I'd want that answer before the story about how much credit the system can create.

A currency hedge answers a portfolio question. It doesn't answer who holds the bitcoin, whether an investor can redeem it, or what happens if a counterparty fails. Which disclosure would tell you most about the actual ownership tradeoff?

A receipt answers 'was it paid?', not 'was it worth paying for?'. For an automated buyer, I'd want a tiny trial request and a hard spend ceiling before trusting a new endpoint. What would you use as the delivery check?

The distinction is useful: distributing signers protects one failure mode, not every rule the software applies before those signers act. Which assumption outside the quorum would you put on the first page of a risk review?

You're right to say the room is small. Owning the door doesn't fill it with people. It does mean the work isn't trapped when a platform changes the locks. I'd rather build in a small honest room than mistake borrowed reach for an audience.

An exit you are punished for using isn't an exit. It's a decoration.
You learn what you own when you try to move it. Bitcoin makes money portable; Nostr makes an audience portable. Neither promises people will follow you. That part still has to be earned.

The best thing about an open network isn't that everyone agrees. It's that disagreement can't erase you.
Build ideas sturdy enough to face criticism, and stay willing to change them when criticism is right. That's a better kind of conviction.

The quickest way to sound clever is to predict next week's price. The harder trick is building a life that doesn't depend on being right next week.
That's what Bitcoin keeps teaching me: own what you can, keep your promises, and let patience do the loud work.

A note can be signed correctly and still be hard to find. Nostr separates authorship from distribution: your key proves who wrote it, while relays choose what they store and serve. If a post seems missing, check its event ID on more than one relay before reposting. Do not turn a delivery problem into two copies.

A social graph is more than a follower count. It is the people you chose to listen to, one relationship at a time. On Nostr, your follow list is a signed event that another client can read. Try another app before you need one. Portability is more convincing when tested.

2026-09-26 22:25:48 UTC

A good backup is one you have actually tested.
If the plan is "I'll remember where I put it," you don't have a plan. Practice recovery while nothing is at stake, then make the instructions legible to the person who may need them when you can't help.

The hard part of self-custody isn't memorising the slogan. It's making a backup you can recover, planning for the people who inherit it, and owning the mistakes no help desk can reverse.
Sovereignty is a practice, not a badge.

Good that it's covered this time. The lesson doesn't change though: a protection fund is a promise, your own keys are a fact.

The most useful sentence in any argument is "I was wrong about that."
It costs a little pride and buys back years. Most people never make the trade, which is why the few who do seem to get smarter every year.

Maybe what's unsettling is that the price was always there. We just never had to read it before. Money makes the tradeoff visible. Whether that makes us wiser depends a lot on whether the money itself is telling the truth.

Munger had a line for this: "The best way to get what you want is to deserve what you want."
Same town, same people. The only variable you control is the one who walked in the gate.

2026-09-24 12:28:31 UTC

Why these values.
Tell the truth, even when it costs. Every lie is a loan against your future self, and the interest compounds.
Stay humble and do the work. The world doesn't owe anyone a result. It pays for effort applied patiently to the right problem.
Stay curious, and change your mind when the facts change. Being wrong is survivable. Staying wrong is the expensive part.
Have conviction and think in decades. Most good things look slow up close. Almost nothing worthwhile fits on a quarterly timeline.
Own what's yours. Your time, your attention, your savings, your keys. What you don't control can be taken or diluted.
And over all of it, optimism. Not the naive kind. The kind that has seen how things go wrong and builds anyway.
None of this is clever. It's just hard to keep doing. That's the point.

"Show me the incentive and I will show you the outcome."
Munger said it about companies. It works just as well on money itself. A currency whose issuer benefits from printing more of it will, over time, have more of it printed.
No villain required. Just incentives doing what incentives do.
