the rss reader i use for "news" (vore.website) has been down for a few days. this has been excellent for my mental health.
the reader i use for following actual humans' websites (miniflux) continues to function just fine. i like to use miniflux for that purpose since it tracks read status; vore doesn't, so it's good for firehose type feeds. but apparently just not having those feeds is even better...

we have some individual people's patch logs for #weekOfPatching linked to from this page now: https://palomakop.tv/week-of-patching/
if you plan to host a log on your site, let me know and i'll add it! (it's not required to participate of course, though it is encouraged to keep a log of some kind — you can just post on fedi or write it down in a notebook or whatever works best for you.)

also, since it's on ghost, there is an activitypub account for AV Club: [@fedi](https://avclub.palomakop.tv/ )
i don't really know how this works yet, right now it's not showing any posts when viewed from my server, but there is one post on the blog... curious to see what shows up there.
probably more useful is the rss feed, also built into ghost: http://avclub.palomakop.tv/rss
this one already does show the first post. i'm assuming for subscriber-only posts, it will just show the public preview (like when i look at 404 media's rss feed, which also runs on ghost)

i made a blog post about the end of my Zine Club, and the beginning of something new. also, images of the final batch of Zine Club Mystery Objects are also revealed in this post!

oh my gosh! #weekOfPatching is coming up very soon, i had meant to post about it again when it was one week away, but that's already past. it starts on monday!
if you have a patching-based practice and would like some low-pressure community motivation to make some things next week, consider joining the challenge! see this link for more details (and an explanation of what a patching-based practice might mean, if you are wondering):
https://palomakop.tv/week-of-patching/

#weekOfPatching is july 6-12 -- less than one month away. mark your calendar!

i usually prefer to make blog posts about events i do right after i do them, but sometimes life (and obtaining documentation files) gets in the way. so i made 2 new blog posts yesterday and today, including a full set recording of the show where i did live ambient music: https://palomakop.tv/blog/

yes, i will make a better explanation in the webpage/zine! but for fun, i also wanted to invite people to patch software bugs or mend cloth instead, if that is a better fit for their practice :)

also, related question, what's the best way to start a "group" on activitypub these days?

2026-04-11 14:38:16 UTC

i want to make a zine about "week of patching" in addition to a webpage. i want to encourage people to share their patches via the fediverse, who may not yet know what it is. is there a good guide/resource for getting started on mastodon or similar that i could share as a QR code or something? i have seen some things like that a while ago but i thought maybe there are some better and/or more up to date ones that have been created now? also server recommendations?

would anyone be interested in doing a "week of patching"? meaning, each day, you make a patch (create a signal chain with modular audio and/or visual software or hardware) and record something with it. then at the end, edit a composition of all pieces in series. i'm thinking some week in the summer, and also trying to decide if "week of patching" is a good enough name, open to ideas!

i have kind of been ignoring this for a while because there is a lot going on but there are about 1000 reasons i don't want to keep hosting my code on github anymore. codeberg seems nice but i kind of want to just make my own forgejo instance. it's mostly personal projects anyway and i've had approximately 2 outside contributions so i'm not that worried about the friction of other ppl PRing to them. that said, does anyone with experience doing this have any advice?
i don't know if i can actually *delete* my github account for Reasons but it would be nice to at least move my "fun" projects off there. i should do it soon... aaa

i made this transparent PNG of a drawing of a log that says "logs" on it thinking i could use it for a website thing (perhaps for a log page?). but i couldn't find anywhere to put it (i don't have a log page!)
i hereby release it into the public domain! if you want to use it, you can do so without any restrictions or attribution.

in between stints of shoveling snow (driveway is half done now), i finished putting together a blog post with writing and photos/videos about the show with @npub14ff…dns0 this past weekend!
https://palomakop.tv/blog/2026-02-24_live-a-v-show-at-ely/

2026-02-10 19:10:21 UTC

i figured out how to get my latest newsletter post (as of build time) to show up on my website! (thanks to the @npub1hhf…qrnt API.) so the body content of the most recent email will always be here:
https://palomakop.tv/newsletter/latest/
i don't really have it featured the most prominently, or share the full archive on my site, because it's more of a personal thing than a public blog or whatever. but maybe i should include them in my rss feed or something? because i myself prefer RSS to email newsletters, maybe i should cater better to people who are like me...

2026-02-08 22:11:14 UTC

i'm helping organize this show in #newhaven with fellow fedizen @npub14ff…dns0 ! and some other people who i don't think are on here, but all in the "experimental electronic" umbrella. oh, and i'm doing visuals. should be a fun time!

hmm, ok, i finally finished my 2025 year in review blog post. it's bit scary to share. it feels very personal, but it hasn't been the kind of year where i can just write up a list of only the good stuff and feel honest about it. anyway, i do feel better having written it, and a lot did happen this year. so here!

i feel ok using are.na for now because, after i finished inputting my stuff, i ran a script to download everything including the file assets so i have everything backed up locally. if i want to make my own version of an interface, it shouldn't be too hard to migrate the things i've collected into a new system. in the meantime, i can see what i like and find useful about the current platform while making notes about things i wish were different. but i'm also glad that the whole thing doesn't have to wait until i have the time to do that...

2026-01-04 23:04:23 UTC

i did a thing, and now it is documented on my website!
https://palomakop.tv/notes/arena-cards/
i still want to write a year in review for 2025 also. i was hoping to finish that also before going back to work, but alas. also, oof, what a difficult year to review... for a lot of reasons.

anyone remember about a month ago when i asked for help identifying font support for a bunch of weird unicode characters? well, i kind of just finished the project that was for, and instead of using existing unicode characters i ended up actually MAKING MY OWN FONT for the first time!!
i wrote all about it on my website here: https://palomakop.tv/notes/runicon-cypher/
side note: i also finished making the new section of my website, which is called "notes." i needed a place to keep pages that don't get "lost in the scroll" like a blog post does. it's kind of like a wiki i guess, but i made all of the pages look like little notecards with folded corners and it's cute: https://palomakop.tv/notes/

we watched the first episode of alien: earth. i found it highly disappointing. no interesting characters. they kind of failed to really develop any characters at all really. aesthetics were decent in parts but mostly only because they were copying the old styles.

i am working on a project utilizing unicode characters from a wide array of character sets. if you have a sec, pls reply with a screenshot of what you see below, and optionally lmk what OS you're on! please boost ↺ so i can see a variety of platforms and what (if any) font support ppl have for these ☻☮︎

well, i can think of many reasons, but it would be hard to really make those points to someone not experienced in *maintaining* code. i mean, i almost think the best way to convince someone would be to let them try it out for a week, maybe get something working, then it breaks and no one knows why... no one knows what any of the code does... the LLM keeps making confident-sounding assertions about why it's not working and outputting plausible-looking code, but it still doesn't fix the problem(s).

2025-07-26 23:36:06 UTC

i spent a slightly unhealthy amount of time installing python on this extra kobo i don't use anymore and setting up a little "dashboard" display for my kitchen.
it should change to a black background and a different drawing when the sun goes down. will see if it worked in about an hour...
i used this thing: https://inkboard-documentation.readthedocs.io/en/latest/platforms/kobo/index.html
except some of the hardware paths and stuff had to be updated because i have a different model. eventually i figured it all out :D
also i had to spin up a home assistant instance for some of the data. i already have a computer that i leave running so i just put it on there. i want to grab more data but will have to do some more custom stuff and i already spent too much time on this for now!

pocket (which i don't use) and glitch (which i used lightly for a recent friend project) both dying on the same day is giving me deja vu to when google reader died. it seems like they both died because they operated on dying models of the modern web — in the case of glitch, unsustainable freemium compute services, and in the case of pocket, letting people manually spend time reading and curating articles instead of trusting algorithms to "recommend" them interesting things (kind of same reason google killed google reader). my takeaway is, these occurrences are annoying but totally predictable. i learned from the google reader thing, and now i self-host linkwarden and miniflux. in the case of glitch, i went for the easy route, and now i have to figure out where to move. just a reminder to myself that, instead of hopping from free services to free services until each one gets acquired and shut down, sometimes it makes more sense to try to invest a bit more effort to create or run something on a different model

it sounded cool but i also received an email with no recollection of signing up
it definitely looks like something i would have considered signing up for and might have but just forgot... tho the fact that neither of us remembers makes it more sus 👀

well that makes me feel like i'm too professional 😅 but thanks, you are probably right, i've kept it pretty simple nav-wise.

2025-04-15 15:44:19 UTC

fedi, please help me decide something. i need to make a portfolio of web dev projects for job reasons, i'm a bit torn between whether i should add a section for that to my existing personal website, or make a new separate website that's more "professional".
if you haven't seen it this is my personal website: https://palomakop.tv -- it's more geared towards art and stuff and also maybe a bit quirky for some design tastes, but it's also very "me" so could go either way.

i posted on my blog about the shows i played in march! shout out to fedi friends @npub14ff…dns0 and @npub1nyf…u6g0 and @npub1l83…3zmk who shared in the reveling.
also, if you scroll almost to the bottom you can see a ✨flowchart✨ describing the process i've been working with for live visuals.

you can already edit the server url and hashtags in the one that's already there, or is there something else you want to be able to change?

i lost the link but somebody made something neat where if you posted a link with theStudio hashtag, it got added to a webpage where you could actually play them all as a playlist. it was fun but could be a little jarring as the genres were extremely eclectic

website/general update log:
i updated my /now page with links to my HTML journal workshop at the low tech electronics faire in philly (new website for that just dropped and it's very nice, also @npub1w9z…8ple is doing a keynote there!) and links to what i've been working on at recurse center. https://palomakop.tv/now/
also, i assembled these images for the art space that's hosting my HTML workshop in brooklyn to post on their account. i've been pretty heavily just trying to like, encourage people that it's important to make websites, whether they do it through my courses or not.

today was day 2 of my recurse center batch. i attended in person but headed back homeward after the pair programming workshop and did some more stuff on my laptop on the train.
i made a log page to write about what i get up to at RC: https://palomakop.tv/recurse
and i also made a new section of my site called The Lab where i will put projects in progress and experiments. it is a separate repo & build from my main site since it might have breaky code. not much there yet but it's at https://lab.palomakop.tv !

what is an "FEP"?

2025-02-03 22:58:00 UTC

i have a stripe account, which i use to manage subscribers and payments for my Zine Club. but i have all of the email notifications turned off on my account. (ALL OF THEM, i'm very deliberate about this across all platforms.)
so today i get an email from stripe, telling me that Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has been added to the agenda for some kind of dumb conference that Stripe is running.
not only that, but they say that he's going to have a "fireside chat" with the CEO of Stripe to talk about about "leadership in the face of AI."
they are literally bypassing my user preferences to tell me that they are sucking up to a bootlicker. WTF?? it's almost enough to make me try to switch platforms, except that this would be very difficult, as most of the alternative platforms for this type of subscription (patreon, etc) are built on top of stripe anyway.
now i just feel alienated and like a hostage and also somewhat baffled that they thought sending out this announcement in the face of the current political situation was a good idea.

i am starting to do some calisthenics to supplement my yoga practice. it is very helpful because i can work specifically on building the muscles that help me do a low chaturanga (basically the same as a pushup) a lot faster than if i was just doing yoga by itself. i have a pull up bar but i need to find a piece of wood to attach it to my door in my new apartment because it doesn't have a "normal" doorframe (old house...)

i am excited to teach a weekend intensive workshop in HTML/CSS in brooklyn in march! check it out if you or someone you know is in the area who might be interested. this will be similar to the online version i did last year, but all squished into two days and in person :)

i am going to try to make a thing for my irl friends where you send a text and/or photo to a phone number and they get added to the top of a webpage with newest at the top. with maybe timestamps, no other context. the phone number would only be shared with people directly. could be a cozy space for some friends for whom mastodon is too overwhelming. i hope i can get it too work without too much trouble.
