Look for these other signs of drowning when persons are in the water:
Head low in the water, mouth at water level
Head tilted back with mouth open
Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus
Eyes closed
Hair over forehead or eyes
Not using legs—vertical
Hyperventilating or gasping
Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway
Trying to roll over on the back
Appear to be climbing an invisible ladder

I thought it might be. Except I agree with him. The judicial system found no wrong doing. Her brother Moses has a different childhood recollection which is on record. As someone who worked in UK criminal justice for 15 years you have to trust the system. If you think it's failed, you need to work to change it. But I'm not a big fan of the court of public opinion. So I wasnt offended by Alda's opinion, because he didn't defend Allen, he defended the judicial system.

I've noticed, if you wait long enough, there will always be a news story which challenges the doom laden one you have just been presented with. Or at least puts it in perspective. However the nature of the newscycle now means we don't want to wait for the less emotive story, & when it comes it's insufficient which is bc the previous one was so extreme in it's presentation, it (almost) suggested there was no solution. So we remain permanently angry. 2/

2025-02-16 11:01:50 UTC

I know there are lots of studies which demonstrate that rage gets clicks, & that keeping us permanently angry increases engagement (no matter how detrimental that may be for our health). Therefore framing is an important part of how news is shared. For example, headlines often appear at odds with reality, which is why digital media has shifted our reality to always believe the worst & to be dissatisfied with any solutions - the solution becomes something to be angry about as well.1/

I was thinking this morning about how news is presented (curated?) on the Guardian Web page. Does it set out to just give the reader an endless list of rage inducing/doom laden stories. Or is it feeding me these because I click on them (even though I try to limit my daily rage intake)? When I'm looking at Masto, I try and boost a range of posts to give a breather from the endless doom. I often wonder why digital media doesn't (appear to) do this?

Just had a quick Google re polling on the subject, & quite frankly it's all over the place. What's clear (as any good researcher knows!) is that your question very much influences the response. So all political colours of the rainbow have declared victory on this one. I do hope Labour decide to educate people about immigration, bc this will be the best (if not the quickest) way of changing minds. Sadly their current trajectory doesn't suggest this is Labour's goal.

I remember reading Andrea Dworkin when I was an angry feminist undergrad in the early 90s. Even then I could see how her terrible upbringing had affected her perception of men. Reading around the subject (as they say) helped me understand how simplistic a lot of her arguments were. And simplification & slogans do well for the right.

that's because their extreme weather events weren't extreme. Ergo making services run during what was normal weather events would be financially accounted for. We get extreme weather (fog for example) but whilst it affects services it's not frequent enough to be worth providing extra funding for (at the moment).

I think the problem is actually; the media insist on reporting it. Bad weather will disrupt travel, therefore it's relatively normal. If it's normal then why is it reported? (Obviously I'm excluding extreme persistent weather events caused by climate change for which we do need to find a solution).

I feel very uncomfortable seeing obese pets. This cat has multiple health problems because the owner over fed it & presumably didn't play with it sufficiently (if it was an indoor cat). I volunteer for a cat rescue, & it would raise red flags if any cat this size was brought in.

I'm not sure even that would make it bearable! It's a sad indictment of our British culture lol. But then I don't really find much British comedy that funny... Although I was surprised by how much I liked Ghosts. So I guess I can occasionally move with the crowd.

Mrs Brown's Boys is one of the most popular comedies on British television. It is not funny. The fact that so many British people like this outdated unfunny comedy show is the reason we voted to leave the EU. If you look it up it'll all make sense to you!

have you read Character Limit: How Elon Musk Destroyed Twitter
Book by Ryan Mac? I've just listened to the audio version. It's worse than you could possibly imagine (& I imagined it to be pretty bad!) It has to be said though; Jack Dorsey doesn't exactly come out of it smelling of roses either. It's not as though Twitter wasn't a dumpster fire before Musk took over. It's simply that Musk turned it into a raging inferno.

I covered patriarchal violence against women in my first dissertation in 1991 & again for my thesis in 2020, this time focusing on coercive control. Whilst DV awareness has improved this doesn't seem to correlate with anything effective actually being done about. Is that bc most of us still live in a patriarchal society? Yep. Look at the murder of Sarah Everard, & the tone deaf policing of the vigil. To say I am still full of rage is an understatement

I agree. I'm not disputing the findings of the study; that often these people are middle aged. However, whilst they've always been here, social media has galvanised them somewhat. Therefore, whilst young people may be radicalised by disinformation, middle-aged men are reassured by it, because it reflects preexisting beliefs. Social media brings these people together & helps them organise. But it didn't create the problem, stupidly did -sorry, not feeling v forgiving!
