Due to the recent controversy and resulting defederations with some instances, we decided to move the postmarketOS Mastodon account away from Fosstodon. Thank you for hosting us since 2018 and best wishes to @npub1z3w…c039 and her new team!

Thanks to [@FediTips](https://social.growyourown.services/@FediTips ) for writing this excellent transfer guide: https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server/

Heads up on recent mesa upgrades in postmarketOS edge:
* Due to changes in the drivers for the Mali GPUs in Mediatek SoCs like MT8183, the recent update to Mesa 25 causes graphical display issues on Mediatek SoCs. A workaround is in preparation: https://postmarketos.org/edge/2025/05/05/Graphical-issue-with-Mesa-25-on-Mediatek-SoCs/
* The qcom/adreno bug that caused GTK4 apps to fail to start with the new GTK4 rendering backend has been fixed in the latest patch release! Related workaround will be removed once it is in flatpak: https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/merge_requests/6472

Heads up: "On certain devices (Adreno-based GPUs, e.g. OnePlus 6) Flatpaks apps using GTK4 might fail to start with a currently unknown reason.
As a temporary workaround, you can start flatpak apps with GSK_RENDERER=ngl as environment variable."

In our previous blog post 2025 Priorities: Reliability, Audio, Cameras and More, we asked "is there anything that you find terribly important that we have missed here?". And indeed, there was one thing that people would have liked us to focus more on, which is a better keyboard experience.
This was unbelievably great timing, because we are actually integrating a new keyboard with great new features!

🗨 As the Matrix.org bridge to the OFTC IRC network will likely stop working soon, we are now self-hosting our own bridge for postmarketOS related channels. The chats should continue to work the same as before, but let us know if you run into unexpected issues.
If you are a well known community member who runs one or more channels related to postmarketOS (e.g. for mainlining a specific SoC) and would like to use our bridge too, then let us know!
https://postmarketos.org/blog/2025/03/31/matrix-bridge-migration/

2025-03-30 19:24:47 UTC

As our community grows, we are increasing the focus we put on planning and organizing the work we do. Therefore we have been thinking hard about priorities for this year.
Read all about it on our blog:

Update regarding the Matrix / OFTC IRC bridge for postmarketOS channels (+ related like Sxmo): We will keep a bridge around. We have set up a selfhosted bridge and are waiting on OFTC to increase our connection limit before we can start using it, which will probably happen any day now.

2025-03-17 22:13:23 UTC

We will be able to spend a significant chunk of money on building our upcoming hardware CI system (and related software components) for improving the reliability of postmarketOS. For everybody who is donating to postmarketOS: you are amazing, thank you very much for making this possible! ❤️

Documentation is very important - one of the reasons that we are happy to announce that [@undefined](https://social.treehouse.systems/@undefined ) is our newest Trusted Contributor!
They currently do the following in postmarketOS:
* Working on the postmarketOS wiki; making sure the docs are up-to-date, useful and easy to understand
* Mainlining Broadcom Kona series chipsets (in pmOS soon!)
* Co-maintaining the Exynos 4 close to mainline kernel fork
* Occasionally tracking down bugs and regressions

To users of the postmarketOS Matrix and IRC channels:
Looks like Matrix is shutting down the IRC bridge to OFTC that we are currently using soon. We are considering whether to selfhost / possibly use an alternative public bridge instance / maaaybe it is not worth keeping a bridge around at all (meaning that we would move to matrix only)
Is it important to you that we keep a Matrix <> IRC bridge around?

xiaomi-davinci & xiaomi-surya now use u-boot and are merged into a generic qcom-sm7150 port:
> […] U-Boot comes with an EFI implementation that lets us boot the Linux kernel with systemd-boot and have U-Boot pick the correct devicetree blob instead of appending it to the kernel.
> This means that as long as a device is supported by the SM7150 Linux kernel fork and U-Boot, it can boot postmarketOS with no changes needed in postmarketOS!
Well done @npub1f36…pk0l! 🎉

We are excited to announce that @npub188a…xt96 is now a trusted contributor in postmarketOS!
He is a maintainer of our favorite tiling WM based Linux Mobile interface Sxmo, maintains quite a few Alpine Linux packages, contributed some cool pmbootstrap patches and recently made a talk "Introduction to postmarketOS" at SeaGL! 🥳

We're trying to track down those last few bugs and get them squashed so we can finally tag that 3.0 release. Please don't hesitate to report any issues you encounter!

2024-11-02 22:26:52 UTC

pmbootstrap got some big refactoring today to it's "apk" handling.
It will now always run apk on the host (no more slow apk through QEMU!) and should do a slightly better job at caching packages.
https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/pmbootstrap/-/merge_requests/2463
This should make some things like building packages go faster!
If you're already running pmbootstrap 3.0 alpha you can "git pull" and give it a whirl.

2024-10-31 19:35:54 UTC

We just shipped some major refactoring in our initramfs, removing some of the oldest tech-debt in the distro and finally making it possible to boot without first finding and unpacking the "initramfs-extra" archive!
This new unified-initramfs behaviour is now the default for most devices, and may lead to a slight boottime speedup!
https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/merge_requests/5636
We're hopeful this doesn't break anything, but if you do run into issues please go check out the tracking thread here https://postmarketos.org/edge/2024/10/31/Recent-changes-might-affect-booting/

The migration to our selfhosted gitlab instance will be delayed by a month:
* The much better migration method from gitlab.com "direct transfer" is currently not available.
* We are in contact with (very friendly!) gitlab.com support and they can hopefully enable it for us.
* If it is still not enabled in a month, we will use the "export and import" method instead, which means comments/issues/MRs are not associated with original users anymore.

some early bringup was done, but msm8998 support is quite flaky upstream and nobody has managed to get the panel up (if the phone itself manages not to crash)

> thanks to your donations we do not only have enough to pay the server bills. But we can also pay somebody to work part-time on postmarketOS from the donations, which will be a first since we moved to OpenCollective!
Let's see what the future brings, ideally we can do more like this in the future, in other areas of the project as well!
Again: thanks to all who make this possible, you are amazing! :BlobhajHeart: ✨
