An anthropologist I know worked in Papua New Guinea for like 20 years because he was studying Coca-Cola and the fucked up stuff they did to intentionally change cultures there. While he was there, he had children who grew up in the particular cannibalistic tribe that was hosting him. When he came back to New York with his kids as teenagers, they were like FUCK NO and went home to PNG and stayed tribal members, leaving their parents behind in NY. When they were still in NY, I remember talking to them about the things they missed in PNG: friends, close knit community, but mostly freedom. The kids had a lot of autonomy and lots of ways to exercise their own agency. They said they missed being able to walk into any random house to see what they had to eat (and being welcome to it). When they got to NY, they did that to the neighbors and learned really fast it isn’t socially acceptable. They said they will always prefer PNG, despite having to fight a brutal Indonesian occupation. They said everyone who leaves to “become modern” comes back because being modern is a hard, miserable life. I think about them from time to time, like now, when modern life is hard and miserable.

If my spouse wants to prank me, all he has to do is pretend to give bad advice about pets to his friends over the phone while I’m within earshot. “Put peroxide on it” will make me nearly grab his phone.

IQ is pseudoscience that keeps being embraced by scientific communities because of cultural bias in science. That aside, though, I’ve noticed I like low IQ people a lot more than others and the people who mention IQ least of all. 🤔

All I did was take little animal figurine toys my kids don’t want anymore and hid them in the plants along the sidewalk and now my house attracts every kid from all around who visit them every day. They don’t even take them but visit them every day. I’m so moved by their joy.

even if they add yard waste, it would help A LOT

they don’t have a good enough mix of materials to compost is my guess. They need to add more *variety* to it. So…compost more?

If you are cutting down a dead or unwanted or unsafe tree in your urban yard, leave the trunk and the thickest branches that are safe to leave on. I see more animals and cool stuff using dead trunks than I see using living ones sometimes! It is so cool to see. https://extension.umn.edu/my-minnesota-woods-news/building-biodiversity-your-forest-cavity-trees-snags-and-deadwood

If people know you’re autistic, they will pay you less for your work. Even if they seem like they would never do that. Even if they aren’t doing it consciously. They see your work differently. It’s like the difference between paying a 13 year old to babysit and hiring a nanny with a degree in childhood development. If you are the latter but autistic, you’ll be paid like the former.

Saw a cringe video of ice agents moving a bunch of kids from one van to another and protesters are yelling, “fuck you, you fucking Nazis”, etc., and the kids look terrified. If you see something like this and are only gonna yell, then yell that people are working to rescue them and you’ll save them or something less scary than grown men screaming FUCK YOU. I guarantee you little kids don’t get who you’re yelling at.
