Anyone have any idea how to troubleshoot an old Gameport joystick? It was tested working on WinXP, but when I took it home Win95 said it wasn't connected properly. Do I need to get a second joystick/soundcard, or are there other things I can do to test? Eg. how can I check the gameport device configuration?

Hey #music people who know about #piano education: I need a few books that will help me get from "was a promising student 30 years ago" to "can play acceptable parlor/swing piano" or at least keep me busy for a year or two on the way there. I can read music, I've played various instruments but very little piano since I was a kid.
I'm thinking maybe a couple of technical etude books and some enjoyable music to play. I think I might have some Scott Joplin sheet music lying around already.
I'm ready to put in the time but I just can't pay for lessons.

Do you know the story of the slogan, מיר וועלן זיי איבערלעבן (mir veln zay iberlebn, we will outlive them)?
When the Nazis sadistically forced Jews at Lublin on the death march to sing, they started to sing לאמיר זיך איבערבעטן, (lomir zich iberbetn, let's reconcile), a religious song about reconciliation with God, but without enthusiasm.
Then (according to the story) someone chose to change the lyric to מיר וועלן זיי איבערלעבן (mir veln zay iberlebn, we will outlive them, i. e., the Nazis). Then the singing became so enthusiastic that the Nazis stopped the singing and dancing.
Now today, the slogan is used in a general anti-fascist manner. People get it done on banners or for tattoos.
According to a reliable source, recently it has been sometimes referred to as a "traditional Yiddish anti-Zionist slogan.
Antizionists MAY use it of course! But please don't claim that it is a "traditional Yiddish anti-Zionist slogan," because it most decidedly is not! Please don't erase the memory of those who were exterminated by the Nazis.
I have a very low opinion of someone who would do something like this. It shows a total lack of any sense of duty or loyalty to anyone but oneself, and also a complete detachment from reality.
People who would deliberately or unthinkingly rip those words out of their historical context, and appropriate them for the service of their personal political goals (however admirable; I was getting court martialed for refusing to follow IDF orders around the time a lot of those people were getting born), have neither the sense of responsibility to honor their ancestors, nor the honesty to confront the world as it is rather than is it would be personally convenient for them to be, nor the wisdom to assume anyone else's frame of reference even for the sake of learning.
Such people are (or choose to be) only capable of projecting their own ideas and prejudices on others in whatever way benefits and comforts them personally.
It is the same "post-truth" attitude that fuels the
Inquities of the Right (including Zionism, by the way!) and even if it does not offend you as it does me, know that no good will come of it.

One of my earliest memories concerns the air raid sirens from the first Gulf War, when I was five or six. I remember the Safe Room, which had brown packing tape over the power outlets and around the windows, supposedly to help protect against chemical weapons. Our building didn't have a bomb shelter.
I remember being woken up night after night, to go sit in the Safe Room with the brown plastic tape. There was also a record player and a couple of couches. For some reason—I'm not sure if this is an authentic part of the memory—there was nothing on the walls, just blank, slightly dirty white paint, even though our apartment walls were always full of pictures, books, decorative porcelain plates...
Despite tge tape, we still had to put on gas masks. I had a special one for kids, with a hood and a big blue briefcase looking thing with the filter and a respirator fan.¹
So night after night, go to bed, have a nightmare, get woken up, go to the weird bare room with the packing tape and the record player, and sit there with the gas mask on until the all-clear came.
Eventually, I just refused to go to bed. I put my foot down and told my parents that I won't sleep until after the air raid, because I'm tired of being woken up in the middle of the night every night.
These past few days I can't stop thinking about that feeling. #Minneapolis, this is what you are feeling now. The unbearable tension of waiting for the blow to strike, so that it should come and go already...
This is what war feels like.
And I still don't want to sleep. But I have to, for my babies.
¹This made me mad. I wanted the same cool looking grown up gas masks the grown ups had. My mother once let me try hers on. It turned out that my little six year old lungs weren't strong enough to pull air through the filter.

We finally got a car last month, after a year of bus and bike travel, but with the state of public transit where we live made it too difficult with the twins, who just turned two in October. It's a used car, in pretty good condition. Or so I thought...
Even though I'm employed (in this economy? Thank God), we are at the end of the rope financially. We are living paycheck to paycheck and very deeply in debt. This car repair bill is really more than we can handle right now, and I really hope that you can help me raise the money before the car just dies completely.
Please help. It's $900-$2000 for a used transmission, and $1000 for labor. I'm going to put the middle number here as a goal.
For what it's worth, I'm an immigrant and child of immigrants, and the only wealth I got from my parents is their love for me, and the love of learning they instilled in me. Insofar as I have anything at all, it goes back to those two things.

Since we are having a big day for antisemitism, here's a thought:
As a Jew (and a human being who cares about humanity, including Jews), I am simply not interested in any political theory, movement, or tendency that doesn't include a credible theory of antisemitism, and a serious praxis around it.
This includes Zionism, whose theories of antisemitism range from self-serving projection to magical, essentialist trash, and whose praxis ranges from bad-faith weaponization to compulsive violence; and it also includes antizionism, whose theory ranges from self-serving projection to outright denial, and whose praxis ranges from bad-faith projection to compulsive glorification of violence.
To the right, we are mascots or useful tools (or targets, for the honest ones), and on the left we are in a peculiar situation where we are required to be on the side of everyone else, no matter what, to be considered for a tentative membership in humanity, but no one (including us) may be on our side, because some of us have been known to do bad things.
It's an absolutely intolerable situation which, Divine guarantees aside, directly threatens our survival, since if we can't have reciprocal allies on the left we don't have anyone, and a small nation cannot survive in this world without allies.
This is why I've pretty much abandoned politics, aside from making angry and cynical statements such as this.

Hey any #math people here? I have a math problem that I need someone to explain to me like I'm 10.
The math problem is like this: if I have a 2d projection of a 3d landscape, things get smaller as they get farther away. So let's say that there's an object that is moving from position 1 to position 2. I know how much smaller this object gets, but I don't know 3d coordinates or anything, only 2d. I want to calculate what should be the apparent velocity on the projection. Obviously on the y axis it should be slower! But by how much? I have to figure this out only from the change in the object size.
Yes, this is #GameDev math.

2025-06-08 14:09:44 UTC

Another question for folks knowledgeable in #Godot #GameDev. I'm working on a game with 2d hand-drawn (not rendered) backgrounds and sprites. I can simulate perspective by drawing a grayscale depth-map of the walkable areas, and use that to scale size and speed for things that are at a greater distance (depth). So far so good. It's adequate, but not very flexible. What if I want my character to be able to crest a hill in a scene that has a flat angle viewpoint? It would need to actually go "backwards" a little, but be obscured by the top of the hill... This would also mess up the Y-sorting and everything.
So my question is, what are some considerations for trying to do this in a 3d world, but fake the 2d look? An invisible 3d mesh to move on, billboarding, and so on? It should look the same, kind of along the lines of the old LucasArts adventures.
Obviously whether or not it's "worth it" is a judgment call, but I'd like to have a little more information on what it looks like to implement this.
EDIT: This is silly, why make things more complicated when they already work?!!
