In a way, Iran wouldn’t have been in that position if the fascist in the White House hadn’t blundered himself at their mercy, but it seems rather clear to me that Iran is playing a careful game of keeping this an issue until the midterms, at this point.
(Though, Israel also has a big part in ensuring this doesn’t stop, Trump put himself at the mercy of his Junior partner. Though, given the US strength, if he really cared to keep them in line, pretty sure that strong pressure could be exerted)

Well, the Ormuz straight has non-trivial impact on the US.
Messes up the oil price, helium supply chain, aircraft fuel supply, etc.
Added impact if the also close the straight into the Red Sea and Suez.

And they played the game before, with carter.

By arrangement, you mean that the commission has a score / existing piece of music as an input, and produces an audio recording (possibly as a set of stems) as an output, or is this also includes cases where there is an original composition going on, but your output is still just audio files ?
Would it make sense, if you are requisition an original composition to ask for both audio+stem and access to the score ? (With some licensing rights to the score)

2026-06-08 14:47:43 UTC

- reply

Reading the FAQ, there are cases of musical commission where there's a lot more output than just stems.
(Thinking of Christopher Tin work, where the whole scores were published, with some author rights, but if you want to make your own Baba Yetu, you have a lot to go on from).
Also, Firaxis actually replaced the percussion line that Christopher Tin had used with a different set of drums, not sure what they needed to make that change. (Listen to Civ IV version and then to the Calling all Dawn version).
An anyway, awesome project, and super valuable contribution.

I think you really should read the whole thing first, I don’t think Anthropic is going to be so happy with it.
(A lot of religious people have ignored the Church Social Doctrine over the years, Anthropic CEO might do just that with the latest encyclical, but this is a serious takedown of inequalities, explicitly calling out gender inequalities (perhaps the first time the word "gender" is used positively in a church teaching.)
It also kind of relegates JP II theology of the body to the dustbin of history)
This text is about far more than just AI, btw.

Modern CPUs are wider than that, Sklylake would probably decode something like 5 nops per cycle, and I think modern AMD and Apple Silicon get to 8-wide, which would decode 8 nops per cycle. And given nops usually don't consume actual units, it is likely going to be on that order of magnitude.
Now, obviously this also depends on the performance of the fetch / memory hierarchy, but that looks like highly prefetchable.

Apparently it is meant to inflict damages comparable to France population and industry to the USSR. So world altering, but by itself unable to destroy everything.
Unfortunately using up these would likely result in a general nuclear war which would destroy everything, as soon as either Russia or the USA gets involved.

Consequently, France arsenal is hard capped at ~500 warheads, and it currently thought to be ~300 warheads. (Some margin for recycling, and for the futur, as losses do occur over time).

2024-08-30 19:37:05 UTC

France is the one country that still has a nuclear arsenal but has to recycle its military grade fissile fuel, as it has dismantled the Marcoule installations producing military grade Pu 239, and the Pierrelatte military U 235 enrichment plant. https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usine_d%27enrichissement_militaire_de_Pierrelatte
(The last military grade generating reactor shut down in 2009).
Tritium is still being produced (given its short half life in the range of a decade), nowadays from a Civilian reactor.

Is there a platform where the amount of work to do for drivers is manageable for a from scratch linux replacement ? (And distro could then pick between the rinux or the linux kernel on that platform, and then extend the work to other modern platforms one at a time)
Or are there a lot of drivers that can be used on most platforms, and that would need to get RIIR before such a kernel could replace linux ?

2024-08-30 11:38:42 UTC

I feel the driver situation could still kill such an effort, unless you can get a lot of important players on board to develop the Rust drivers too.
I wonder what would happen, if instead Rust In Linux did a harder fork, and stopped playing LKML politics with their tree, and be able to pull drivers from mainline, while they rewrite various subsystems in Rust
