computers come in three major genders (windows, macos, linux) and many other less common genders.
the hardware is 99% the same between the genders. the main difference is outward appearance (gender expression), how you interact with them (gender roles), and what forms of institutional coercion they are subject to (the patriarchy)

there are only two hair colors: brown or blond, which the doctor determines for you when you're a child. if you dye your hair it doesn't change your true hair color. if your hair changes as you age it doesn't change your true hair color. if your hair doesn't match what your doctor chose, your parents are encouraged to dye it to match your legal hair color. you can only date or marry someone with a different hair color. when you sign up for a website you have to tell them your hair color.

i love how in DK64 each Kong uses a different form of currency in shops. DK uses yellow coins. Diddy Kong uses red coins. Tiny Kong uses purple coins. Lanky Kong uses blue coins. Etc. They can't use each other's coins.
So, in theory, diegetically, Diddy Kong could not lend money to Lanky Kong, or pay him for goods or services, because they use different coins. I wonder what the shops do with those different coins...

@nprofile…vsjg hmm ... I think haskell can. statements are monadic or applicative expressions in a do block. and you can compute new kinds of block statements with BlockArguments too.
i'd also say forth counts. it's not unusual for most of the conditional and looping constructs to be computed from some much more primitive forward and backward [conditional] branches.
but i guess you meant something else that would exclude these examples?

"should new C projects be started in 2026"
all software projects are C projects, unless they are going out of their way to avoid C by being bare metal projects, or they are targeting a virtual machine (which itself is a C project, but it purposefully removes any correlation / contact with the outer environment) ... which is the same thing, since nobody writes for bare metal these days without targeting a virtual machine first.
as long as I have to use C based FFI it's a C project.

There's a point here that should be reiterated for anyone doing programming language design, or any text-based user interface: Certain characters that are very easy to type on US keyboards, like [ ] { } \ ` and so on, tend to be much harder to type on any other keyboard.
When I first got into programming, the Portuguese keyboard i used meant the learning curve was even steeper in the beginning.

suppose a god gives you the ability to tell whether any probabilistic event is exactly a 50-50 probability. you could use this ability to detect whether a coin flip is fair, for instance.
you could also use this ability to tell if a six sided die is perfectly fair, but it would require testing lots of different combinations. so my question is: how many different ways of representing a fair coin via a six sided die, do you need in order to be able to conclude that the six sided die is fair?

One thing i'd love to change in C is to support named arguments for functions, whenever a function is declared with parameter names.
It's probably super cursed to implement in old compilers but I think most of the time it would be an unambiguous boon to the readability of client code. Also any time the wrong names are passed it would be an error, so it could catch some mistakes too.
C already has designated initializers for structs, this would be like expanding it to function arguments.

@nprofile…ral2 In a Hilbert-style deduction system this |- X -> Y only follows from X |- Y in propositional logic because of the deduction theorem. Inference rules operate at the top level, so A |- B doesn't mean "A implies B" it means "whenever A is provable, then B is provable", so there's no way to apply this rule inside an implication. i.e, adding this rule breaks the deduction theorem.
(I guess this is why natural deduction and sequent calculus are usually preferred over Hilbert-style deduction.)

i think classical music is overrated among musicians. among the general public classical music is unpopular because it's old. there's no innovation. it's the same few dead composers reproduced and repackaged over and over again.
but people do listen to new instrumental orchestral music, even classical style. it shows up in soundtracks to films and games. people listen to these willingly, because people want to listen to new music. not listen to the same dead composers for the rest of eternity.

imo, the big difference between science and pseudoscience, is that in science, an idea can be improved upon and replaced by a better idea, so there is a history of shifting standards as the science improves;
while in pseudoscience you always refer back to the original version of the idea, or to the person who had the idea in the first place, & they become a kind of standard that you can never improve or replace.
once you see this distinction, you start to see pseudoscience everywhere.

if the person who submitted code couldn't be bothered to write it, don't review it. blanket rejection is not just appropriate & efficient, it's necessary.
code lives in the minds of its developers, as mental abstractions that provide leverage on the domain. generating code without that mental labor is like building a lever without a fulcrum.

1. do not assume their inability to communicate in a form of English that makes you comfortable has any bearing on their intelligence or ability to do the job.

3. do not use a lot of slang and idioms on purpose to trip them up.
4. do not correct them, you're not here to teach them English, they're not here to learn English. stay focused on the job.

how does this system handle dates before 1 CE? it's easy! in the spirit of unicode han unification, we use out-of-band signaling to determine if the year is positive or negative 😊 just change the font! if the month letter is written in a serif font, then the year is negative.

2024-04-22 23:38:17 UTC

new date system idea: YMDD where:
- the month is represented by a letter of the alphabet (e.g. A is jAnuary, B is feBruary, C is marCh, D is aprilD, ...)
- the day is represented by two decimal digits
- the year is represented by the corresponding unicode codepoint 😊
so that would make today's date:
ߨD22

2024-04-22 23:02:28 UTC

what do we call month/day order confusion.
dates are a strong point against working only with positional arguments.
