... but also because he was always clear about his "mode of engagement" - speaking as an expert on viruses. E.g., when the question was "should schools be closed", he pointed to the evidence that this would likely decrease transmission, but he also emphasized that this has social consequences that are outside of his area of expertise. /2

For me, a gold standard for good science communication is still Christian Drosten's "Corona Podcast" (NDR) - in part exactly because of your point above, that he engaged with new evidence over the course of the series (e.g., regarding the benefits of masking, airborne vs. droplet transmission) .... 1/

Yes, and maybe my example is a special case; and a sign of our absurd times, where in some areas (climate, vaccines, ...) publicly presenting the broad scientific consensus is already perceived as "activism" because the topic is so highly politicized.

"Modes of engagement" is a helpful concept - but I think I disagree that all activism is / needs to be selective.
For example, a climate scientists can acknowledge and even explain in detail the role of solar cycles, of model uncertainties etc; but still emphasize the main conclusion: that climate change is real, overwhelmingly anthropogenic, and reversing course requires cutting emissions.
