LMMS :unverified:

(Temporarily inactive again, as I stopped having time to run this account. We'll be back shortly)

Unofficial news about the free, cross-platform DAW.

I report on changes in LMMS with a little summary and some thoughts, plus a link for the interested :)

I also boost interesting posts about LMMS from other people. Images without alts and posts that are missing necessary CWs will not get boosted.

There was an end-of-year report I forgot to report on:
- 📯 https://lmms.io/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37706
- :github: https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/discussions/8199
And with this I go back to my cave… I stopped having enough time to run this account again, so your source of news is going to have to be the official github and forums for now. Sorry! I'll come back once I'm less busy again :blobcatheart: thanks for the continued support.

regulus79 fixed a bug where some samples in AudioFileProcessor would cut off before their actual end depending on global sample rate when played in a beat clip. A very *specific* bug, certainly.
https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/pull/8176

The "about" dialogue was broken for a bit - when compiled with clang, it would show as "GCC Clang 21.1.6" instead of "Clang 21.1.6", and the architecture/operating system info was simply missing on all builds. This got fixed in two separate PRs.

After more than a year of work, beat patterns finally have previews. Screenshots and explanations are in the linked PR
https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/pull/7559

2025-12-06 21:44:05 UTC

LMMS projects now remember which platform (e.g. linux, windows, darwin) they were saved on.
https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/pull/8116

2025-12-06 21:08:55 UTC

LMMS now has a setting for default autoscroll state ^^ no more annoying scroll behaviour in fresh instances
https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/pull/7851

2025-11-25 14:42:12 UTC

A minor bug that caused clips with just one note to be resized when quantized got fixed.
https://github.com/lMMS/lmms/pull/8131
You can find an in-depth explanation of what was going on as well as some side-effects of this fix in the PR description.

2025-11-18 10:52:35 UTC

Fixed a minor visual issue caused by instrument windows being wider than they should've been.
https://github.com/lMMS/lmms/pull/7805
(note: a similar issue exists with instrument windows growing taller than they're meant to be, which will be fixed as a side-effect to https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/pull/8096 )

2025-11-12 17:24:08 UTC

The minimum Qt5 version got bumped from 5.09 to 5.15 - you will probably not have to care about this if you're not a packager or dev of LMMS though.
The main benefit of this will be reduced code complexity and improved maintainability, since a lot of old workarounds were able to be removed.

The piano roll window now automatically closes if there is no valid clip selected. Empty projects also now automatically create a new clip when the piano roll is opened, so beginners aren't confused as to what to do.

After a lot of work by many contributors, we finally managed to merge the Qt6 branch into main. This means you can build the master branch with Qt6 instead of Qt5 now.
Note that nightly builds are still using Qt5 for now, since Qt6 support is still fairly new and may be less stable.
https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/pull/7339
https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/wiki/Compiling#using-qt6
edit: a minor correction - windows MSVC builds seem to have Qt6 enabled by default, so you windows users can try Qt6 without compiling it yourselves ^^

The integrated file browser got some major improvements. More details are in the PR description: https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/pull/7679
The TL;DR is that it behaves more like a regular search now, instead of being largely useless (in my personal opinion)

2025-11-03 14:03:22 UTC

Audio resampling was reworked a bit, and among other things you now cannot set the interpolation mode on export anymore, since it can conflict with some instrument plugins. Overall, resampling should now be more performant and less buggy.
https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/pull/7858

2025-10-21 20:39:43 UTC

You can now open samples in SlicerT from the file browser in LMMS' sidebar
https://github.com/lMMS/lmms/pull/8100

2025-09-10 17:09:55 UTC

You can now glue all notes in a piano roll by simply not selecting any before using the glue action.
Previously this told the user to select some notes first. This change brings glue in line with the other actions, for which this behaviour already existed (where applicable)

Thinking of migrating this account somewhere that supports posting in markdown (or basic html).
would be real handy for linking PRs without having to clutter the text with full links for example…
So if anyone knows a good instance to move to that:
- federates with most other instances
- doesn't run on *key
- is similar in vibe (has to be IT themed, preferably with other projects already there)
- is well moderated (not m.s)
- will stay up (not just a single person as op)
…then pls do tell

We're back!
I can't summarize everything that changed since I last posted (in 2023!) so I'll just do two recent ones.
---
Fastigium fixed crashes in several old VSTs by disabling address space layout randomization (ASLR) in LMMS' VST backend
- https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/pull/7987
---
Monospace-V reverted the duration of some bundled samples that seem to have gotten longer recently - this increases compat with projects from LMMS 1.2
- https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/pull/7948
