it looks like we may not be waiting very long -- ArtCraft, the genAI toolkit, has launched a straight up clone of Adobe's suite, with the same UI, shortcuts, file format support and everything. But it's "clean room," because nobody at ArtCraft has decompiled any Adobe software at all! Riiight? https://arstechnica.com/ai/2026/10/software-is-over-bold-ai-developer-takes-aim-at-adobe-with-open-source-clones/

I guess, sure, if everyone with a business and customers could spin up their own bank whenever they wanted

The original parecon theory text actually refers to money being deposited into and withdrawn from "the society account," meaning there *is* a general standard for the *unit* of currency -- just not the *amount* of it. I thought it was easier to say "mint"

2026-08-25 13:05:35 UTC

- reply

Yeah, I remember parecon. Every worker has two jobs, which are balanced so that if you *really* want to be, say, the director, you only get to do that half the time, and the other half is the very worst job in that workplace. Probably customer service, lol
Money doesn't circulate. You get paid, and then you spend your money, and the expense goes into the books of wherever you spent it, but they don't get "revenue". Basically, every workplace is also a tiny, tiny treasury that mints the same currency for its own workers, in amounts negotiated with the consumer councils. Though actually this system was conceived in the 2000s on the substantially accurate assumption that we wouldn't need to use paper money
Businesses don't own anything, though. If they need the use of a factory, they have to negotiate that with every other business that needs that same factory, and any nearby citizen's councils, for that year and only that year

You might be looking for "Syndicalist," an old and fairly successful form of market anarchism in which trade unions govern the economy of their trade themselves.

In any case, I don't really think that an instance subscribing to a *specific* relay, even one with open registrations, constitutes opt-in consent for all its posts to be relayed just anywhere, by anyone, for any purpose. If my posts ended up on Bluesky just 'cause my Mastodon server relays to other Mastodon servers, I'd be upset.
This thing with tags.pub may be less bad than that, but @npub1764…nuj0 doesn't see an issue at all...

2026-06-28 06:10:08 UTC

- reply

tags.pub uses "clone" accounts that repeat posts from a particular user, so it's not quite like a regular relay. A fair number of people who were ok with their posts ending up on servers they'd never heard of, *weren't* ok with the cloning aspect

2026-06-28 05:55:36 UTC

- reply

The line that @npub1764…nuj0 is taking is, if your server subscribes to a relay with open registrations, that constitutes consent to share all posts with the entire internet.
The fact that lots of server operators didn't think that was what it meant does not seem to have made much of a difference to him. He keeps on describing the service as "opt-in," because it's not engaging with any instance that doesn't relay like that.

Race science is *bad* science, but I think excluding it from the category of science entirely only helps other scientists feel better. Any time a social scientist uses IQ for anything, their science is bad in the same way.

Some Atlas Network connected right wing groups are signing up chuds to InternetNZ, the charity that controls the .nz top-level domain. They're not happy that the new constitution specifically enshrines #Māori participation.
If you've got NZ$21 to spare, you can do something about that. Sign up here, and vote on things when the opportunity presents. Citizenship not required.

I'm thinking over how I want my own IDE to work, and I think the "everything on one screen" thing's appealing, but I also want mine to run on phones... I might be able to get it down to two screens with some work...

I'm not sure I credit there being a difference that matters between "generality and unopinionated design" and "designed for AAA workflows".
When we say software's "unopinionated," this means much the same thing as when a person's like that: it goes with the flow. In game engines, that means an engine that uses the design philosophies already present in other game engines -- but the ones that the creators worked with, specifically, which means no Clickteam, and no Zillions, though both existed when Polycode was being developed. Ivan Safrin wanted a free and open alternative to Unity, which meant he wanted a game engine in the sense that Unity was a game engine.

So if you're going to carry ideas in bags, you want a single big bag
And not put too much in at once, so that if i walk fast, ideas don't fall out
And so I spend most of my life working on one project, though there are other things that interest me, just because I don't like being a bag hanger
I can't switch to boxes because... This is just an analogy, work with me here.

Baggy context?
Other people have boxy contexts, which can be stacked, and they can carry the stacks without working *too* hard, usually
I have only a bag. A big one, but it's hard to reach the ideas at the bottom. And even if I get more bags, they don't stack. I could hold my arms out straight and get someone to hang bags off me, I guess, but not for long, and trying to walk around like that is a terrible idea

When I have to move a chair that doesn't fold, I may well be able to lift it myself, but I really need a second person carrying the legs, because the chair is too *bulky*.
Suppose I've made, like, so much moonshine that I really need barrels to store it in, but those would attract unwanted attention because it's Prohibition or something, so I have to fill my truck with the bottles, and it's inconvenient. But neither the moonshine nor the bottles it's in are *bulky*. How do I succinctly describe the moonshine's inconvenient quality?
I need this word for an analogy to describe a common mental problem with my flavor of autism, which I currently call "bulky context," as I find context switching *inconvenient*, but not actually difficult, as long as I don't need to do a bunch of contexts in a row. But I also want to capture how context, for me, is unusually *fluid*, and may escape the container I've put it in if I don't pay attention.

I can tell I'm going to be in bugfix for a while before I start making a new game, even if it's just an example sim for a jam or whatever.
