"The closest analogy I would give would be that the main openings in chess were well-studied, but AI discovers a new opening line that had been overlooked based on human aesthetics and convention.
In fact, the von Mangoldt function itself is celebrated for it's connection to primes and the Riemann zeta function--but its piecewise definition appears to be odd and unmotivated to students seeing it for the first time. By the same token, in Erdős#1196, the von Mangoldt weights seem odd and unmotivated but turn out to cleverly encode a fundamental identity \sum_{q|n}\Lambda(q) = \log n, which is equivalent to unique factorization of n into primes. This is the exact trick that breaks the analytic issues arising in the "usual opening"."
One might say some relatively low-hanging fruit was left on the tree out of habit to use probabilistic methods in this field? Not dismissing the interestingness of the result, but when an expert goes "ah, that makes sense, and people generally just don't try that known piece of tech", it's not like a "my goodness, that's so crazily unexpected and new, it's alien mathematics" moment.

That said, I'll absolutely not say that someone vibe coding up a cool UI for some underlying tool they've worked can get enjoyment out of seeing the result. I was taking the answer in the quote as being something more visceral, about the sense of accomplishment of managing to get something so ridiculous working.

First time I've seen a mathematics paper acknowledge the ONI. I know in the US you get/got a lot of cool pure maths funded by AFOSR, but here it's basically just the ARC in my experience so far. I cautiously say that I'm glad if there's another potential funding body that will regularly give grants to pure maths.

FWIW I think university rankings should be taken with a grain of salt, but then so should predictions by functionally-a-CEO pushing a big change as part of his platform.

2026-02-10 23:00:22 UTC

**Then:** (2023 news article)
"University of Adelaide vice-chancellor Peter Høj told a staff merger forum in July that if the two universities merged now, the new institution would be “very very close to being in the top 100 already”
He predicted the new institution – to be named Adelaide University and scheduled to open in 2026, pending parliament’s support – would be ranked around 110th on the Times Higher and QS immediately after amalgamation.
“So, if we prepare ourselves really well for 2026, if we are not already at least on one of the key rankings in the top 100, it will not take long for us to get there,” Høj said."
==================
**Now** (email to staff)
"A brief reminder that the Times Higher Education survey is now being sent to researchers, inviting their participation.
The survey seeks input from publishing scholars on the quality of research and teaching undertaken by higher education institutions globally. It plays a critical role in informing a university's score in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, both in the overall ranking and across subject areas.
We are very proud that Adelaide University launched at 133 globally, but we know it will take consistency and effort to maintain and improve on this.
If you receive the survey, I would be grateful if you would take the time to share your thoughts. Your feedback is a critical part of this process."

Having taught first-year calculus, including things like geometrically deriving \(\tfrac{d}{dx}\sin(x)\), and estimates on errors from Taylor polynomials, and also liking the kind of foundational subtleties in analysis that can be broken down to understandable chunks, I agree that Archimedes' argument involving more than one round of estimates (post 2/3 in the below mentions \(256/153 < \sqrt{3} < 151/78\) as going into the process of calculating the bounds for π. Once my colleague Raymond Vozzo and I tried to work out what was the clearest/simplest way to completely rigorously define π or 𝑒, in the sense of analysis. It's not trivial!

@nprofile…xuzd @nprofile…47dl I personally would have said 'injections' rather than bijections. For instance injecting some sensible uncountable set of functions to the reals. Proving Baire space or Cantor space is (classically) in bijection with |R is a pain. Not saying the lazier statement is trivial, as the reals are anything but trivial, but it would illustrate a useful idea: anything containing an uncountable set is uncountable. I'd hate to accidentally let a student walk away thinking that to prove something is uncountable it needs to be by constructing a bijection with P(|N)....

@nprofile…t5a9 If you had to ask me, the key idea is that there are two ways of measuring the topology of certain higher-dimensional shapes described by polynomial equations: one that involves calculus (so something vaguely analogous to how electromagnetic fields are described), and one that only involves cutting out curved "slices" of the shape using more polynomial equations. The conjecture is that the latter, which can on the face of it measure at least *some* of the features that the calculus-based approach can see, actually captures everything.

@nprofile…t5a9 In Devlin's book The Millennium Problems he spends nearly three pages at the start of the chapter on the Hodge conjecture explaining that it's really difficult to explain. He says "To the layperson, the very inaccessibility of the problem is perhaps its most interesting feature." And he had a lot of experience explaining mathematics to the general public, but nonetheless resorted to something halfway between understandable and accurate: so more or less neither.

Having a sketch of Connes' current ideas at the level of 19th century tech (sweeping a few things under the rug that got proved in the early 20th century) was a fascinating exercise. It reminds me of when arithmetic geometers give talks that give an on-ramp to a key modern conjecture in terms of some really concrete classical problem, like the congruent number problem leading to elliptic curves and then Tunnell's theorem, which is conditional on the BS-D conjecture.

From Sergei Artemov, talking next at the the NYC CT seminar. The best bit is in the last paragraph.
-----
Abstract: Non-compact proofs are used in mathematics but overlooked in the analysis of (un)provability of consistency. We focus on arithmetical proofs of universal statements (*) "for any natural number n, F(n)." A proof of (*) is compact if all proofs of F(n)'s for n=0,1,2,... fit into some finitely axiomatized fragment of Peano Arithmetic PA. An example of non-compact reasoning is the standard proof of Mostowski's 1952 reflexivity theorem: PA proves the consistency of its finite fragments.
It turns out that Gödel's Second Incompleteness Theorem, G2, prohibits compact proofs but does not rule out non-compact proofs of PA-consistency formalizable in PA. This explains why and how the recent proofs of PA-consistency in PA work: they essentially formalize in PA the explicit version of Mostowski's non-compact proof and use Gödelian provable explicit reflection to rid redundant provability operators.
These findings yield a new foundational reading of G2: "the consistency of PA is not provable within a finite fragment of PA," complemented with the positive message: "the consistency of PA is provable within the whole PA." This perspective suggests that Gödel's theorem does not represent a failure of the system to "know" its own consistency, but rather a structural limit on how that knowledge can be packaged into a single finite string.

2026-01-29 00:48:48 UTC

I've learned recently from snooping on discussions about formalising explicit estimates in number theory that integration by parts
\[ \int_a^b f'(x)g(x)dx = \big[f(b)g(b) - f(a)b(a)\big] - \int_a^b f(x)dg(x)\]
can be done with a pair of functions \(f,g\) (on an interval in the reals, with real values) when one of them (say \(f\)) is continuously differentiable (sure) and the other is merely of bounded variation (!). The point is that you take the \(dg\) in the naive undergraduate formula seriously, and use the Riemann–Stieltjes integral, rather than taking \(dg(x) = g'(x)dx\) as we teach students. And BV functions are precisely those where the R–S integral of a continuous function with respect to them makes sense.

My voice is not that strong, and does not count for much, but I do wish the IMU would publicly address what is going to happen to the ICM this year. The leadership would, I hope, either make a hard call sooner rather than later to shift venues, or explain why not. Or, at absolute minimum, let everyone know if there are ongoing discussions the outcomes of which will be announced in due course. I cannot imagine such discussions aren't happening.

@nprofile…wkcu Thanks. I'm interested in a very specific item: the use of = instead of a symbol for isomorphism (≃ or ≅ etc), which someone once suggested to me might have been a shortcut (before widespread computer typesetting, perhaps driven by typewriter usage) that people at the time could have used with full knowledge that it was really an isomorphism.

@nprofile…fws0 Well, that's that! If there are not abstracts I can't justify asking for them :-) Thanks for letting me know.

@nprofile…wkcu I wonder if there is an analogue of this for mid-century *French* mathematical printing.

@nprofile…fws0 Hmm, looking at a different conference on the same platform, I see that it has a similar setup, but the abstracts are linked from the schedule in that one. I don't want to make more work for anyone, but I hope that perhaps the abstracts will land at some point (not to mention slides etc after the fact).

2026-01-20 02:11:40 UTC

@nprofile…fws0 sorry to be a pain, but the link that says 'abstracts' on https://conferences.cirm-math.fr/3523.html points instead to a differently-formatted version of the schedule instead. Is this intentional?

@nprofile…u3x7 Since trying an AI system on solving mathematics problems is essentially experimental science, one might reasonably demand https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preregistration_(science) as a standard for the field, like in other experimental sciences

If you see a paper on the arXiv claiming a proof that Reinhardt cardinals are inconsistent with ZF, note that the author already claimed this in a prior arXiv preprint and retracted it. And also claimed a proof of P ≠ NP.
I cannot make an informed judgement about the new paper, but I would await experts' assessment before leaping to conclusions.

There's a multi-site drama going on involving BSky and meta.MO right now. I'm not going to add to it here, and don't wish to spread the muck, but anyone who is seeing it please be aware the board and the mods are aware and discussing.
