Yeah - it's best to set your normal relays as the ones you want to use in normal apps, you can use our whitenoise relays for your inbox relays (or use your own if it's a good relay). The group relays will default to whitenoise relays in the app for good group performance but the original issue was almost certainly your inbox relay being down.

It is arbitrary, but only because it doesn't matter much. The only reason that we run our own relays for White Noise is because I monitored a bunch of the most popular relays for a few months and their uptime was dog shit.
The White Noise relays are still just relays, running normal relay software, in accordance with the spec. The only event size limit in nostr is NIP-44 payloads, which have a 4GB limit. It makes no sense to artificially limit events to a tiny size. This isn't bitcoin. We don't have to worry about nodes running on raspberry pi's running out of space.

2026-09-29 16:12:08 UTC

For those crashing out over this... the limit on NIP-44 payloads was raised to 4GB minus 1 byte back in June. I'm not asking for a protocol change, it's already changed.
#nevent1q…wf5l

2026-09-29 16:10:40 UTC

- reply

it is solved at the protocol level. in june, the limit on events for nip-44 was raised to 4GB minus 1 byte. it's just that most relay implementations & operators haven't updated their config yet.

2026-09-29 12:48:37 UTC

- reply

already started.

2026-09-29 12:03:43 UTC

- reply

no - a 200 person group has a welcome message of about 300kb. the MLS welcome object itself is only about 100kb but then we nip-44 encrypt and base64 it, so it gets bigger.
I just think 1MB+ is a better size limit is all.

2026-09-29 11:51:49 UTC

- reply

it's an easy fix too. 🤷‍♂️
my relay implementation Wok has higher default limits. Khatru, Haven, and others also default higher than 64kb now. It's basically just a historic holdover.

2026-09-29 11:49:09 UTC

- reply

total event size. this only for welcome messages that invite people into the group (which are gift-wraps - kind 1059). most group messages are kind:445 and are tiny.

2026-09-29 11:39:20 UTC

2026-09-29 11:06:25 UTC

- reply

this is not a fork. it's already in the NIPs.
the past limit was NIP-44, but that limit was raised months ago in the NIPs repo. this is just relay implementations not being updated or configured for higher limits.

2026-09-29 10:50:05 UTC

- reply

I choose optimism and action.

2026-09-29 10:49:28 UTC

- reply

sure - that's fine. Kind 1059 is really the only one that needs a higher limit.

2026-09-29 10:41:36 UTC

Hey relay runners!
It's time to raise the event size limit on your relays. 64kb is so 2023. 1MB+ is the hot stuff now.
We're trying to support groups larger than ~60 on @nprofile…9puf and the limiting factor is inbox relays rejecting events that are larger than 64kb. White Noise handles it beautifully when your inbox relays don't block it.

gm. software engineering in the classic sense is dead.
before you dismiss that as obvious, consider the following:
1. agents have reached a critical level where they're better than almost all human programmers. even when it comes to planning complex architectures.
2. we don't need to drive things on machines we have with us any more. in fact, sitting in front of a screen all day is now an anti-pattern. a powerful laptop can't beat a good desktop (and is less upgradable). you can also leave your iOS, Android, browser, and other hardware attached to your desktop for agents to use.
3. the judgement of what to build (vision) and how to build it (the values that drive decisions while pursuing that vision) has become THE critical skill.
a lot of engineers and builders (myself included) are still holding on to vestiges of a bygone era, mostly because we enjoy the process, but if we're serious about building something impactful, we have to learn to get out of the way.
The Way™
1. Define the problem to solve (vision)
2. Define the constraints (values)
3. Deliver feedback (your own to start, from users as soon as possible)

pow doesn’t work for spam prevention. the delta between the pow that a phone can generate and what a server can is enormous. the logical end is spammers (who use servers) will end up being the only content on the network.

what’s the highest performance, most reliable relay on nostr right now? not a codebase, an actual relay that’s running.
