I'm curious about that emissions factor, since the range quoted from several carbon MRV sources is between 2.5 and 4.7 g CO2e per g wax. 6 is quite a way outside this range.
There is, of course, a fair component in the refining and transport that you could take into consideration, but that won't double the emissions intensity.

The failures of tech and finance journalists to adequately question the narratives coming out of the supposed #AI alarmist machine are breathtaking. The people who should be objectively reporting on how inane and pathetic the claims are instead have joined the VC funders in an intentional mass delusional event where they convince one another that some junior engineer's ravings are proof that the machines are about to unleash the poisonous gases.
Relax. The actual clear and present danger from LLMs is not that they're on the threshold of self awareness. It's the unprecedented misallocation of capital, starving actual useful entrepreneurs of funding.
It's the horrific and indefensible overconsumption of energy and water, causing actual material hardship for communities that have the misfortune of hosting data centres.
It's the circular Ponzi schemes that obscure the financial shenanigans that absolutely will come unstuck and bring down a fair chunk of the global productive economy when they do.
It's the promotion of chatbots as digital surrogates for actual social contact and the psychological damage to vulnerable users.
And it's the uncritical grovelling worship of tech billionaires and a whole class of feudal overlords who fully intend to use this technology as a shortcut to a surveillance state where ethics and governance are outsourced to fragile, unreliable, and resource squandering sausage machines with training biases that guarantee that the outputs will assuredly not promote egalitarian and biosphere-preserving outcomes.

2026-08-28 20:31:51 UTC

The #AI bubble will undoubtedly go down in history books (if we still have books) as the greatest misallocation of capital based on an intentionally propagated mass delusion.
Take away all the legitimate objections to the ethics, energy use and environmental damage, societal displacement of workers, rot in critical technology infrastructure, and all the other very real problems. You still have the glaringly obvious complete and utter abandonment of the basic principles of good business and prudent financial decisions.
There are so many layers of debt propping up this mess that not one player in the game can point to any revenue source that does not depend on all of its customers borrowing money. And when they become the lenders to their own customers in order to make number go up on a balance sheet cooked up with unicorn farts and "annualised run rates" we know the whole thing is a grift of unimaginable proportions.
The valuations being proposed are numbers pulled out of drug-addled fugue states. When a company that has only shown its ability to lose more money than medium-sized countries casually forecasts the scale of its market as close to a third of global GDP, we know that critical thinking has forever left the chat.

2026-04-23 21:08:00 UTC

For decades, NZ pastoral systems were described by agronomists worldwide as a "miracle"...temperate climate, decent soils, and ample rainfall meant that a farmer could keep pasture in permanent cover with a mix of ryegrass and clover, and get a profitable yield of milk, meat, and fibre by grazing stock outdoors year round with few or no off-farm inputs. It was sustainable (if you ignore the fact that much of the land was stolen) and provided the basis for a thriving export trade as well as feeding a growing nation.
The humble clover plant was the key to all of this, with its symbiotic rhizobial bacteria happily taking atmospheric nitrogen in and turning it into soluble nitrates at just enough of a rate to feed the grasses. As long as you didn't overstock or abuse the soil through poor management, the system could keep ticking over indefinitely, with maybe a bit of seaweed or rock dust from time to time to top up the mineral levels.
Of course, capitalism had to wreck all of that. As dairy intensification became the trend in the 1990s, industrial farming was the model and synthetic fertilisers, especially urea, began to dominate and push out clover from pasture mixes. And as any junkie knows, the first hit may be free but every one after that costs more.
Now we have a sector addicted to nitrogen, mainlining stuff shipped halfway around the globe and turning its back on the leakage into groundwater and rivers. The excess nitrogen also "burns up" soil carbon stocks and decreases microbial diversity along with the resilience of the grass. And the feed quality of the pasture goes down, turning to the equivalent of junk food and causing metabolic imbalances in the animals that eat it...most current-day dairy farmers have never seen cow shit that isn't liquid.
So maybe the crisis in the Middle East is a blessing in disguise. Just like it's supercharging transition around the world, maybe it will catalyse some major changes here. #biochar #regen

I don't do business with billionaires. I deleted my accounts with all the social media sites, shut down my AWS instances, and moved my Kiwisaver out of all US equities.
How much impact has any of this had on CO2 levels in the atmosphere?
Sweet.
Fuck.
All.
The only possibility we have to turn this thing is to change the system, and the only way we do that is with radical accountability for everyone who profits from our collective misery.
Don't tell me to take individual action. I've been doing that most of my adult life and I can see the results. I'm taking names.

There is probably only 11 days' supply of petrol confirmed in the country, with a few more weeks' topup on the way. After that we are pretty likely to get a Dear John letter from one or more suppliers.
But there's no messaging, no leadership coming from the Beehive. No admission that the trajectory they put us on made us that much more vulnerable to the intense level of disruption that is about to hit, and no bold announcement of concrete steps to cut our dependence. I think voters will see through it and turf them out for their gross mismanagement, but we have six months of this shitshow to endure until that happens. #NZPol

So I've been informed that I MUST schedule a meeting with the principal and the dean to discuss a PLAN for improving attendance.
I've replied to let them know how excited I am to do this, and that before I'm able to allocate the time, they need to contact David Seymour's office to arrange coverage of costs that I will incur (travel plus loss of productivity and attendant economic harms).
I also pointed out how much we'd all have enjoyed the fallout from trying to send him to school while he was still sick...picking him up an hour later after he's exposed classmates and staff.

If I was in charge of energy security for this remote island country, I would be placing an order for some container ships stacked with solar panels, batteries, and the hardware required to hook them up. Today. Get those things on their way here before any more shenanigans ensue.
I'd also get some ships loaded with e-bikes and small, budget EVs. A bunch of electric semi tractors will be needed, too. Not to mention spinning up workshops to retrofit some of the existing fleet of fossil farm machinery with motors and batteries.
But as all that stuff made its way to our ports, I would be starting the work of electrifying rail lines and getting all the engineers with appropriate chops to build us trains and railcars by repurposing stuff that's been mothballed over the decades. It goes without saying that we'd need more buses in service everywhere, too.
Transportation is our biggest vulnerability as we go over the edge of the fossil cliff.
We could have spent the last thirty years planning and executing a transition on the basis of climate breakdown only to find that it also gave us energy independence. Instead, we've meekly allowed the fossil billionaires and their lackeys to keep the cycle of dependency in place, and we're about to find out what collapse might look like.

On a global basis, smallholders and kitchen gardens feed more people than industrial agriculture. The corporate giants spend huge amounts on propaganda to hide this inconvenient statistic.

I'd be hesitant to do that, as it might drive any foreign matter deeper into the works. I use a very thin wire to clean the USB port and that might work on some phone speakers, but it's more of a job I would hand to a specialist. Every town seems to have at least one phone repair shop nowadays and for a good thorough cleaning that's the safe way to go.

It could be as simple as lint or dust getting lodged in your phone transducer. Or it might be failing. First port of call is usually a good cleaning.

#Ableism sucks.
Spending a lifetime having people tell you that some trait you possess diminishes your worth as a person is not an easy thing to just bounce back from.
And having someone that you thought you trusted weaponise your neurodiversity just to be a shit? Well, that's not going to score any brownie points, either.
(getting this into words will make the rest of my day go a little better...thanks for reading)

Just found a few dozen instances in one of my servers, fetching jpegs.
IPs were in a CIDR block belonging to coreweave.com and they look like classic weaponised bullshit grifters.
New fail2ban rule will be applied.

An electorate with critical thinking skills is an existential threat to right wing politics. They know this and for decades have been on a crusade to commodify education. What they want are compliant drones and fungible units of production.

Thanks, that is the most comprehensive info I've seen relevant to our situation. I'm content at this point that what we're seeing is a respiratory infection of some sort but very unlikely to be H5N1. Burial protocol is underway.

All of our ducks got sick over the past few days. Two have recovered, the oldest is still crook, and the youngest didn't make it through last night. I still don't know what the cause is/was and have been wondering about avian flu and how it will look when it shows up here. Or if it already has 😞

Inflation is now baked into industrialised economies because of the climate crisis.
Expect to hear more and louder calls from billionaires and their mouthpieces about how govts need to curb their spending. Don't listen to their lies, because it's the same neoliberal #austerity snake oil that they've been peddling for half a century.

The "right" time is when the tree is dormant (winter, or late summer/autumn if drought makes the tree go into reduced growth mode). But judging by the looks of that tree, you don't need to worry about it suffering too much from a haircut.

The only safe way to capture carbon is in biomass grown for the purpose of pyrolysis. Photosynthesis does it far better than we ever will...all we need to do is convert to a stable form.
The beautiful thing about this approach is that we get thermal energy from the process that can be used to displace fossil fuels, and the end product is enormously useful for things like restoring fertility to arable soils, or remediation of contaminated water. #biochar

The irony of former derivatives trader and GFC enabler John Key lauding an actual nazi sympathiser and supporting his political bid when you know the backstory of how his family came to live in Aotearoa is pretty wild.

Capitalism exploits democracy, using bugs like corporate media and lobbying to tilt the playing field. The end game is completely undemocratic...call it kleptocracy, oligarchy, feudalism 2.0...it's just the catabolic phase of the disease.

I kind of like the old-school energy of the big RE20 or RCA ribbon mic (plus there are very few things in the whole universe that sound better on some voices). I've got a few Shure ribbons that are decent and much less obtrusive in the frame. They do need a good preamp, though.
