Also in case anyone is thinking it's just left-wing political bias ...
I proudly have Rand, Mises, and Peikoff on my bookshelf, and I'd describe myself as an Objectivist and free-marketeer.
And I agree: based on those blog posts, DHH is a racist and a fascist.

She spends much of her time with the existing animals - so I doubt that'll be an issue. More concerned about "things I wish I knew about rats but learned the hard way".
We had pet rats as Uni students but I've forgotten almost everything about them, except for how they used to sit on our shoulders while we were working ❤️

@npub1ksf…r6s6 I gather you have pet rats - any advice you'd be willing to share?
Our nine year old daughter wants to add rats to her menagerie that already includes a greyhound, three silkie hens, and (temporarily) her Grandma's little dog while Grandma is recovering from surgery.

I was searching for FreeBSD stuff. Found your artwork and bought stickers and a mug. This was my second FreeBSD mug of yours; it was a warranty replacement as the handle fell off the first one. Of its own accord, that time.

Yep! Time for another Redbubble order I think. Funnily enough I discovered your artwork while working for Redbubble back in 2022.

I should clarify that the mug didn't fail. I broke it by dropping a glass rice cooker lid on it (which exploded glass everywhere), then cut myself on the mug handle during the cleanup 😞 🩹

This is not what people normally mean when they say FreeBSD has some sharp edges.

Anyone in Australia have a recommendation for cheap SIMs for kids' phones? Ours are currently with Optus through AussieBB at AUD25/month each. Trying to get monthly bills down a bit across the board.

Interestingly, this works pretty well for extreme edge cases too.
Consider the obvious historical edge cases: NAZI Germany or Imperial Japan.
The outcome of the war - those countries becoming liberal democracies - was very much a thing that all concerned *should* consent to. And in fact, absent their lunatic leadership, almost all did.

As a manager, I've found that eliminating "routine" pressure is a hard prerequisite for so many good things. Retention, engagement, productivity, quality ... you don't get these things by creating a pressure-cooker.
"But what about famous pressure-cooker projects like the original Macintosh?" you might ask.
Per Wikipedia, after the release: "Most of the original Macintosh team left Apple".
This is *particularly* difficult when managing managers, because many companies reward displays of stress and pressure. Back to back meetings, late nights, constant firefighting ... these are all worn as badges of pride in some places. And, in fact, used as a proxy for effectiveness in the same way SLOC count sometimes is for programmers.

Really? I think her views on Conservatism and religion are particularly relevant today.
"Speaking at the Ford Hall Forum in Boston in 1981, Rand discussed the Reagan administration and, particularly, the rise of militant religionists within “conservatism.” What explained her distaste for President Reagan? It was “the philosophy he hasn’t got. I do not mean that I disagree with his philosophy; I mean that he hasn’t any.” What he seemed to believe in was an “awful, populist, religionist hodgepodge of stale patriotism and folksy sentimentality.”
Militant religionists exist “in any period, in the dark, unventilated corners of history.” Their ascendancy, Rand thought, was symptomatic of a philosophical vacuum. The religionists had learned “to be arrogant by encountering no opposition.” Among these militant religionists she identified the self-proclaimed “Moral Majority” and the “pro-life” opponents of abortion.
The Reagan administration was culpable, in Rand’s view, for endorsing and supporting these religionists. Reagan supported some of their “ugliest demands, such as the anti-abortion issue and the ‘creationism’ issue.” Rand recoiled at the spectacle of an American president “endors[ing] the plain, crude, illiterate superstitions of the populace of the Middle Ages.”
Also worth re-reading Piekoff's "The Ominous Parallels" in light of Trump's reelection.
It's always struck me as weird that Conservatives in America often claim to be inspired by Rand. Have they ever actually read her work???

Conservatives have never been supporters of capitalism (or reason, or human rights, for that matter).
https://newideal.aynrand.org/what-was-ayn-rands-view-of-conservatism/
"What, then, was “conservatism” struggling to conserve? It was not capitalism, an idea that leading figures in the movement shied away from even talking about. They wanted to preserve the status quo, a system with elements of freedom and welfare statism, which Rand called the “mixed economy.” What “conservatives” projected was a “guilty evasiveness,” an “apologetic timidity,” and, crucially in Rand’s analysis, a “peculiarly non-intellectual, non-philosophical attitude” in their positions."

It's not a crisis per se; it's a crisis because our taxpayer funded welfare systems are predicated upon (roughly) current age demographics.
I'm operating under the assumption that by the time I'm of retirement age there will either be no state pension, or it will be very aggressively means tested.

Gonna give up on this until this evening when I can do some proper research and/or write up a problem report.

Me, yesterday: FreeBSD on both my desktop and laptop are now sufficiently stable for me to retire my Linux dev partitions.
Me, late yesterday: Oooh, updated packages available.
Me, this morning: The latest amdgpu module causes my laptop screen to blank, and stay blank 😢

Turns out ACPI support on FreeBSD is a WIP on the Framework 13 Ryzen, with progress reported as late as last month. Needs work on both the sleep support itself, and USB4 implementation.
https://community.frame.work/t/acpi-sleep-framework-13-ryzen-freebsd-14-2/61925
It's painful living with a laptop without suspend, but OTOH, I'm pretty confident it'll get addressed given the FreeBSD Foundation's new focus on laptop support (with support from AMD!).

What's the expected lifespan on them now? Naively it seems like it should be "ages" as they're pretty physically simple devices.

I left the Microsoft world back in ~ 2011 to be a full time Ruby, Rails, & Web dev. It was such a relief to be operating in a world of open source libraries and frameworks.
Now I see entire companies built upon open source stacks using (Microsoft) TypeScript, running in (Microsoft) Visual Studio Code, collaborating on (Microsoft) GitHub, using (Microsoft) AI coding tools that plagiarise open source code, and running Linux _inside_ (Microsoft) Windows with WSL.
What the hell happened, hackers???
