Finished the Samhain shawl yesterday, but still need to block it. Very dense stitching, so I hope it stretches out a bit.

#ScribesAndMakers 25: Our next featured creator uses a separate Fedi account dedicated to their book. Do you use different accounts for different creative purposes?
I do use a separate name for my YA writing, and that has a separate webpage and Tumblr (and at one time a separate twitter) but I don't use them a lot.

I'm from El Paso, so the series speaks to me of my home turf, and I think that's part of why I like them.

It's the Posadas County Mysteries, and I love the series, but the writer needed a series bible.

Still reading the same mystery series, and just finished Book 14, where I feel like the scenes were written out of order. There's a lot of knowing things in one scene but not the next, realizing x then unrealizing it, and people not being where they were in the previous scene.
It's still rated above 4 on GR, and it doesn't seem like other people notice the disconnects, but as a writer, they're like broken bones to me.
And yet, I still love the books...

But we can't get too mad, because one of those delays was 3 days off because his wife went into labor.
I mean, has he slept since then?

Another setback for our landscaper. The rocks were supposed to be delivered and noon.
And... they were. To a house across the street. (One digit off.)
I suppose that our landscaper was at fault, since there's no raging about the seller putting them in the wrong place. But that means that our landscaper has to load them into truck beds and then haul them over here.
Things happen, I know. But the bad was supposed to be done by last Thursday, and it's been one delay after another.

After having difficulties getting my voter registration moved (It's been over 2 months now) it looks like I'll be eligible to vote here in October! No paperwork yet, but the state website finally has me in the correct county.

The repairs mentioned above are due to builder mistakes, and may be several years down the line, but we like to know that they're coming so we can plan ahead.
ETA: Forgot the dryer vent thing, but that will come later this year, (Late Oct?) once it's not super hot in the attic.

Mason has given an estimate and gone, plumber has replaced the broken faucet head in the kitchen (Delta shipped us the part free), and landscape guys are working on the bed for the back yard.
Our 'punchlist' for the house (not counting the repairs that we know are coming down the line) now only has gutters and gas logs for fireplace 1 (plus a door). So we're close to done with this stuff, 2 months in.

#WordWeavers 8: Which character would be the worst person to get trapped in an elevator with?
Either Sera Valaren (she would complain the whole time) or Sereis Fallarcassan (who would persistently try to seduce anyone he's trapped with.)

Finished the Persian Tiles throw over the long weekend, and think I have almost all of the loose ends tied in. I did use a different border than the one included, and fudged that a bit, too. (Fancy Pants border). #crochet
Bonus Hilde content, since I can't put anything on the ground without her lying on it.

Got an email from Anthropic today. Had to verirfy. that -legally- Penguin still owned one of my books at the time of the claim. (They had reverted it, but -forgot- to send me the reversion letter. when prompted, they sent one, dated 2 days after the claim went through :o/. )

2026-09-04 11:04:35 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers August 4. Reverse of last month's question: if e-books stopped being produced, how much would you miss them?
Weirdly, a lot. For someone who's continually trying to downsize (at my age, it's better to start getting rid of stuff now than to dump it on my poor nieces), ebooks let me read as much as I choose without accumulating more -things-. So going back to physical books means waiting on the library to open, and hoping they have something that fits my eclectic tastes...

Although I opted to change my voter registration when I moved and changed my DL, I have never received the registration. Turns out the state of Texas still has me voting at my old address, despite changing my DL. Ugh.
I can't register on-line for some unspecified reason, so I printed off a form and I'll mail to the county today.
Why did my husband's go through and mine didn't? We did the same process on the same day, so...

All that said, the level of 'trust' writers now have in any unsolicited email exchange or offer is almost nil because of AI.

It also doesn't help that the used name is the name of a prominent Israeli activist, so the image searches, news searches, etc, are all clogged with info about her. So if my supposed 'fan' is in there somewhere, she's a needle in a haystack composed of the other woman who shares her name.

2026-08-29 19:00:36 UTC

I regularly get those AI fan/editor/promoter letters, and I have a email that looks almost 100% real in my box that shows the person or AI was able to connect two of my series in the latest book, but also used the term 'crossover', which doesn't quite apply, I think.
But.
The gmail address of the person is one letter different from their spelled name, plus searching for uses of that addy turn up nothing. No other forums, web page, linked in. Nothing.
So I'm inclined to spam it.

Okay, i've laid it out and pinned it into two halves (to make it easier to work with. I hope to get the joining done this weekend,, and then I'll proceed to a border. I currently plan on using the 'fancy pants' border, but one never knows....

One of the 18 documents we signed virtually didn't keep the signature for some reason (for what the title company received) yet our pdf copy of same shows the signature, so we just sent her that. So weird. Also, it's the 1/18 documents that has no validity, since its permission to close out a loan that is already closed out (and we've sent a release of lien to them previously.)
So not all smoothly, but not bad.

Closed on the house with a virtual notary named Shannara. That poor girl is going to have her name misspelled forever.
Buyers should be in their closing session now.

Updated my ravelry projects page, which actually has only a small percentage of the projects I've done since I started crocheting. But I'm trying to be better about that, hoping it helps others see how projects work out before purchasing a pattern. (Or encourages them to buy a pattern that I loved.)

Looks like previous owner hired a sub-standard plumber, as the water heater pipes were reversed (hot water going to cold outlet, etc) and the recirculating pump was not even turned on. Also, the small water softener had zero salt in it. So weird.
Plumber will a) fix water heater, b) keep recirculating pump turned off and c) replace the softener with a much larger unit.
It's a relatively new home (3YO), but a lot of maintenance wasn't done, or wasn't done properly.

Got to the dog park this morning in time to catch the armadillo still out on the lawn. The doggos were good and just watched it, so no blood was shed. (We're told it's there usually around 5-5:30 most mornings, so today it was late.)
It apparently recognized a lot of doggage, so it waddled back toward the greenbelt, crossing the path directly between the two dogs.
(I had told them it was a smart rabbit with armor, but I question the smart part now.)

Today I'll be working on my dad's obit. I tend to write rather dry obits and am over leary of including a lot of personal info that might be used by future scammers, so it shouldn't be too fraught. (Neither sibling wanted to write it, and I did Mom's as well, so here I am...)

The cautionary tale is not about writers writing near term scifi, but about medtech companies going broke and leaving people with degrading implants in their bodies with no plan to update or remove them.

2025-04-29 11:04:29 UTC

#WritersCoffeeClub Apr29. Have you ever written anything that didn’t age well?
I wrote a short about a man with camera/computer augments as aids for retinitis pigmentosa. The implant tech was being developed by a German company.
The mag that pubbed it (Jim Baen's Universe) had it in their pub process for almost four years. By the time it was finally pubbed, the tech was implanted in about 50 users in the EU.
Sadly, that company went bankrupt, stranding the users who had it. /cautionary tale

There was a post on BluSky warning people not to post about/name federal employees who protest in any way against the govt.
A reminder that this applies to retired federal employees as well. Their pensions are held hostage by the govt, and T has previously floated ideas of getting rid of their COLAs or employing other ways to flatten their incomes.*
So if you know one, don't offer them up as a sacrifice.
*Congress usually resists this, but there's no counting on Congress these days.
