A few years ago I would have said better date handling, but now we have Temporal.
Better non-floating point math would be good. BigNum is pretty awkward to work with, and easy to screw up without type safety.
The bigger issue is probably just that other languages are going to be faster at computational processes.

I just found out that the people who created the Mandarin Chinese translation of the Gender Dysphoria Bible thought I was trying to claim that all trans people need dysphoria to be trans.
That’s actually the opposite of the book’s thesis, which now has me worried that they translated it wrong. Is there anybody out there who reads/writes Chinese and is willing to perform an audit?

Bam, you're now some random pleb in a world where the roman empire never fell, but you *are* female.

You are suddenly in a barren landscape where plague wiped out 90% of the human population.

Do you take progesterone? Do you find yourself frequently having an energy crash in the afternoon where you desperately need to take a nap?
Progesterone has a metabolic boost factor, increasing mitochondrial function.
Fun fact: Generic Prometrium has a 9 hour half life. Which means that boost wears off around 18 hours after you take it, give or take a few hours.

At the start of my career I was being paid for the code I wrote.
By the end of my career I was being paid for the code I didn't have to write.
One of the nicest complements I ever got from a coworker was that he was astonished how much I accomplished with so little code. Everything I built was designed to be easily and quickly extensible with minimal changes, I planned my structure for future needs.
Code isn't the hard part, not writing code is, and LLMs are really bad at not writing code.

Uhgh, I just had a bad thought.
The rise of LLM coding is going to result in abandonment of actually useful IDE features. Why improve refactoring tooling when you can just tell claude to do it?
Fucking hell.

2026-07-25 06:31:25 UTC

Programming languages exist as an abstraction layer to allow humans to reason about writing instructions for a CPU. Each languge is built to organize around a different pattern of thought.
So if people aren't bothering to read the code that LLMs generate, if they're completely willing to accept probabalistic app generation, why are they bothering with code at all? Cut out the middle layer, skip the compiler, just start making binaries directly.

My rebuild of the Gender Dysphoria Bible site is nearly finished. I have one big feature left before I start migrating translations into it.
This new codebase is so much nicer. The pages are now built with MDX (Markdown + JSX) instead of a confusing mix of markdown, handlebars, and raw html. Tweet copy is now in the page copy, making it much easier to translate, and PDFs for each language are automatically generated.

WC isn't built for SPAs, imo. It's made for progressive enhancement of html from the server, not total dom replacement.
Mind you, I don't think React is best for SPAs, either, it just has a really good ecosystem for that exact thing. Thats what I mean about alignment with startups.
React works well for companies. It smooths the edges, normalizes the platform and reduces cognitive load. The more devs working on a site, the more you want that.

For the most part this is your typical "frontend frameworks add too much complexity" post, the same sort of thing that people have been posting for 10 years.
And just like those that came before, the author is completely right (despite harming their own point by linking to their own micro-frameworks) but unfortunately, everything they've written will be dismissed by most devs because working without frameworks is incompatible with startup culture.

This is a very interesting perspective on the tech collapse. Yes, high interest rates and the loss of tax writeoffs for R&D have contributed a lot, but the biggest abandon may just be because there's not a large need. Thats why tech pivoted so hard into trying to find applications for LLMs and machine learning, there wasn't anything else to show growth in.

Unlike the ring cameras, the included chime does not rely on the network to function, it receives the button push signal directly from the camera via an RF signal, so the chime is instant. It always annoyed me that my Ring chimes would take several seconds while the signal went to their servers and then back to our network. Sounded like a damn cathedral in here as each one went off out of sync.

The last device I got is their doorbell cam. Unfortunately I forgot to take photos of the installation.
It went in really easy in place of the Ring doorbell we already had. Unfortunately I did have to add a new hole in the wall, as the screw holes weren't the same as the ring mounting.
This camera also has ethernet, which is amazing for how small it is. It's powered by the 24v doorbell connection or PoE. A 24v AC adapter is included in the box if you don't already have a doorbell wired in.

The two cameras I bought are Reolink E1 Pros, which are surprisingly cheap for the features. They have full 360° horizontal swivel and probably about 200° vertical swivel. You can pilot it in the app, but it also supports motion tracking where it will attempt to keep a moving object centered.
You can set a default position that it will roll back to after it stops tracking, and you can setup multiple positions that it rotates through.
The camera can be mounted in any orientation.

First, the hub. It's about the size of a cube box of kleenex, and on initial impression is very light. The majority of the weight is from the hdd that comes with the unit but must be installed yourself (I guess in case you want to do something bigger instead). The drive tray is behind a little magnetic panel on the back of the unit.
It can act either as a network device or function as a NAT for a camera only network, hense the dual ethernet. You can also connect usb drives and a microsd card.

Just ordered a new doorbell cam, smart hub, and two other cameras from Reolab, intending to replace my ring cameras.

Imagine if back in the 2000s all the file sharing companies like Napster and Audio Galaxy had issued a statement that copyright laws were going to kill their industry.

Last week we did a four night disney cruise from San Diego down to Ensenada. It was loads of fun, and now we want to do another one. Problem is… all the other disney ships dock in Texas, Florida, or Vancouver.
The prospect of flying to Texas or Florida as a trans woman is terrifying, and right now I’m not confident I’d be able to get back into the country if I went to Canada.
So this trip to Baja is literally the only cruise available to us.

technically he doesn’t have 340b either. He has a theoretical promise of 340b that he isn’t allowed to actually call in.

valid. But I’m pretty sure they weren’t talking about the actual form element. https://react.dev/blog/2024/12/05/react-19#form-actions

TLDR from this article: When Tawny played Mariner in live action, she tried to repeat Mariner’s mannerisms, one of which is frequently crossing her arms. Well when she tried to do that in live action it caused problems, because she kept rubbing the com-badge, which is where the audio department hides their microphones.
The com-badges on Star Trek are actually functional! Thats so cool!

This is what happens when you let your devs use copilot.
This is supposed to be client-side browser code, but this code does not work in a browser.
It passed in the test suite, because Jest copies the entire NodeJS global namespace into `window`, but `window.Buffer` is not actually a thing.
This change also added over 150k of extra code to the bundle, just to hash an object in order to assert a value change.

This is why exercise is so exceptionally hard for me. I want to do it, I know I need to, but there is no dopamine reward for doing so, only agony and sweat.

No, I don't want to work at a "fast growing company", I want to work for a slow rolling company that has carved itself a comfortable niche where the owners aren't gunning for a big exit.
