That's an interesting theory, but code produced by GenAI isn't free. And I don't see a future in which it can be.

@npub1jsl…93xu Thanks to you, I'm waiting to hear about where I'll be stationed as a poll worker on Election Day. It'll likely be an exhausting 17 hour day, but I hope in the end I'll find it rewarding. If nothing else, I've already gained appreciation for how much those people have to do.

I'm seriously considering doing exactly that this year, for the first time. And you're part of the reason. Apology accepted 😀

I did this, too. But now there's WashData, which is a HACS integration that analyzes power usage patterns to do things like estimate completion times. It's far from perfect for me thus far, but I'm learning that the consumption patterns aren't necessarily as consistent as you'd think. I'm hoping that as I continue to have it collect data, it'll dial in to be more accurate over time.

OK, so basically we can detect that something happened, but we're not really in a position to address the resulting damage if it does. Accepted risk? I do understand that there's no perfect solution; I'm essentially exploring the boundary conditions.
What happens today when ballots don't make it to county HQ? I'm assuming this must have happened on more than one occasion.

this was really nice. A good synopsis of the toots you've made in the past.
One question I have about paper records. You certainly can do things that will give indications that legitimate votes were neither tampered with nor destroyed. But what does one do in cases where the evidence points to either event occurring?
We've heard, for example, reports of ballots that somehow never made it from precinct to county center.

And the adapters, in case the phone line was on the second pair. And the splitter so that you could still use the phone. And the tester so you didn't fry the modem by plugging into a high voltage PBX.

I have a 1300 that started life as an office printer, and became mine when it retired from that job, 17 years ago. Those old HPs will outlast the last cockroach. No firmware checking who made the cartridge. No malware. No direct connection to the network, but it can be shared as I need. USB so I don't need to cobble together a parallel interface. I love that printer.

many families do two separate loads at a time, one white fabrics and the other dyed fabrics. So if the dryer takes a long time, you can end up spending the whole day doing laundry.
And some prefer to fold while it's still warm so that it doesn't develop wrinkles.

2026-04-04 03:23:42 UTC

- reply

yep this is why.
It's also why there aren't many clothes dryers that use heat pumps. It's technically possible, and they do get the clothes dry. But it takes a really long time (because of the lower temperature) and people generally don't have the patience for that.

I had a job a little over a decade ago where I actually successfully argued this. They were collecting the data. I asked them what they were using it for, and they said they weren't, but someday they might.
I ran the numbers for them on what it would cost to properly store data they might use someday. It was all gone the next week.
My job got way easier after that.

I remember stumbling onto the reverse (putting the fifth underneath) as a kid and having a 🤯 moment. I used this in later compositions. It sounds incredibly sophisticated, particularly as a progression from either of the component chords. I had hit on the traditional stack earlier, since you're basically walking up thirds. But try that reverse stack...it's a totally different beast.

the automation part is good, but the energy usage monitoring proved even more valuable. I've cut my energy usage by over 10% without any meaningful sacrifice, simply by better understanding how I was consuming energy. That has already paid for all of the sensors and the server.
