Visiting Hampshire this weekend to say goodbye, I was struck by the sense memory of having been somewhere, once, where I was trusted and supported by the institution & community as a whole. Where everyone believed that me following my interests, values and passions was not a threat to others but a benefit to them. Where I could find & be my authentic self and that was inherently a gift to others.
So much of the world, even good places and good people, are pervaded by a sense of precarity. A feeling like you have to justify yourself to deserve support. If I can find more ways to bring that sense memory, that ethos and lived practice, into our needlessly precarious world, then I can think of no better way to keep Hampshire alive

This makes me really sad to read. I totally get the anger at AI being used here, but the move from "I feel anger" to "therefore I am justified in venting my anger without empathy or compassion" is just like... what are we doing. How is this going to make anything better.

People can only take in information that they have capacity to deal with the emotional consequences of. The tone that you share information in greatly influences who will take it in. An optimistic tone will decrease the chance that cynics will take it in, and vice versa. A shaming or righteous tone will increase intake by people who feel righteous and greatly decrease intake by people who feel like the target of the shame or righteousness.

I wish English commentators would speak with the emotional cadence of Spanish commentators. I think Mike Watts does this pretty well but he's the only English language commentator I can think of who does.
The imperialist repression of emotion causes many much greater harms but also...it's annoying to keep missing goals because I'm multi-tasking and commentators think they're not allowed to get excited until a goal is actually scored

I find myself struggling a lot lately with the way American individualism / neoliberalism / the nuclear family model (& also the breakdown of it + rise of two income families) / the hollowing out of third spaces and community groups leads to life being just so overwhelming with so much STUFF individuals need to do.
I wonder if folks have recommendations for writers/thinkers who talk about this? I have a vague sense of the historical forces behind it but would love to learn in more detail.

Anyone else deeply get why people want to cognitively offload everything they can to AI?
The world is So Much right now. We're all juggling a thousand tasks and chores. Why is my tablet not charging? Why wasn't my prescription filled yesterday? Gotta pay my quarterly estimated taxes, find a new trimmer for the parts of the lawn the mower can't reach, make a dentist appointment cause I'm grinding my teeth at night.
New technologies and productivity gains never lead to real ease in our lives. Capitalism greedily gobbles up the difference. It sells us new tools "oh this will make things easier" and we do it because we need it, we're hovering on the edge of burn out, but the end result is we drift further from each other. We replace the resilience of relationships with the fragility of a tool, an app.
The problem isn't people. Please don't shame folks for trying to get by. Shame only adds to the overwhelm and sense of isolation. It perpetuates the system, it doesn't dismantle it.

I don't know how many DC voters follow me but I'm going to rant about this anyway because it's driving me crazy.
If you want to change DC's democratic party, vote for the "Free DC Slate". They're not officially endorsed by Free DC but they're made up entirely of Free DC members and got permission from Free DC to use the name in their slate. Everyone I know in this slate I trust and like.
If you want the same old same old, vote for "Democrats United for a Free DC". They stuck 'free dc' in their name to take advantage of the movement but did not have permission and have no connections to the org. If you're thinking "wow that doesn't speak well of their integrity" you'd be correct. They're literally the incumbents. Everyone I know in this slate I distrust and dislike.

there was one (1) very specific banner-making request that went unfulfilled this week for lack of capacity (RIP the "free portland free dc" sign for the spirit-thorns home opener tonight) but that's it for standard activism tasks
key activist skills i need: project management skills, ability and willingness to show up to places on time and with things you promised to show up with, artistic abilities, event planning abilities, training and mentorship abilities

"On Thursday, Jan 22 a group of about a dozen Vermont community elders entered the atrium of White Cap Office Park in Williston VT, home of ICE’s National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center.
For the next 3.5 hours, they sat together in silence, pausing every 90 seconds to read the name of someone killed in ICE custody, followed by a loud whistle blast.
Around 3:15 the Williston Police announced they had determined that the protestors were not breaking the law."

What's happening in Minnesota is an escalation of things that have happened in other cities - Chicago, Portland, LA, DC. It could be coming to your city next.
I don't say that to scare you. But it might be good to ask yourself:
If this was happening in my neighborhood, who would I reach out to? How would I take action? Who would I trust?
Start building those connections now. If you already have some, strengthen them.

Why are we boycotting Amazon? Because it harms people; because it as giant machine that does not care about the needs of its workers, consumers, or the communities it impacts.
When you lecture someone about their choices instead of taking a moment to build connection and *understand* their choices you are doing, in microcosm, what Amazon does to everyone. You are foregoing empathy. You are assuming you know better than others about what they need or what they should do.

A small number of people are replying to this post telling me not to use Amazon. I know not to use Amazon! I am part of a collective effort to boycott Amazon! I have gone up to strangers and asked them to sign pledges to boycott Amazon! I am all in!
I am *also* a human being who is afraid of flying and who uses food to self-soothe. I bought something from Amazon because I was putting my needs first and I have no shame about that.

This advice is dependent on AI-induced errors being treated as an externality and thus not something the company is liable for.
I dearly hope that this does not become the case - the limited liability of corporations is bad enough. If companies are given any kind of legal pass for AI mistakes and hallucinations...
Somebody always has to bear the pain of mistakes. Capitalism and AI could combine to make sure the wealthy are never that person.

He wrote a number of plays (& screenplays) of note but for me the work that will always stick with me is Arcadia. I read it as a teenager and have seen it performed several times as an adult. There are certain stories that evoke a feeling so sharply and strongly that they come to define that emotion for you. Arcadia is one of those stories for me.
Rest in peace, Tom Stoppard. I hope some day to write a story that has touched people the way your work has.

I've double checked, and I'm pretty sure I've inserted all the code from the tutorial correctly. Which means I'm at a loss for what the error is. Line 215 of federation.ts is the part of the code I'm touching, but why `const follow = await accept.getObject();` is throwing an error I cannot say.

If I'm reading this correctly, my db has only stored where other users (follower_id) have followed Esme (following_id).
Which...maybe the earlier follow requests from the tutorial didn't go through for some reason? I definitely had a couple server errors from miscopied code - quickly fix, but possibly caused a record or two not to be saved. Let me try following again.

All right, possibly relatedly I have hit my first head scratcher. Tutorial says this sql query should give me a result:
"SELECT * FROM follows WHERE follower_id = 1"
But a look at the follows table suggests the following_id and follower_ids are reversed from expected.
This is either a case of me accidentally swapping following_id and follower_id, or may be an issue with the tutorial's expectations re: records in the db.

My one real critique of this tutorial so far is that the code samples can be confusing when we're modifying code (as opposed to simply adding). It's unclear what's being added and where - sometimes the added bits are bolded but sometimes they're not. Also, and this is maybe just a problem with my computer, but you can't copy and paste single lines, so I'm having to copy the whole thing to a text editor then to VS Code.

(Not particularly a critique of the tutorial, btw! Everyone has a weird mishmash of pre-existing knowledge and knowledge gaps they bring to a tutorial. There's no way to write it to meet everyone's needs, which is why tutorials alone are not sufficient to onboard - but can still be a very helpful tool, limits and all.)

I've reached the first spot where I'd appreciate more detail. I'm being guided through creating a lot of different files and while everything is working I don't fully understand how they relate.
There's a schema.sql, a schema.ts, and a db.ts. I can guess what they do - db.ts connects to the database, schema.sql creates the sqlite table, schema.ts creates a typescript interface to the table, but as someone new to typescript I'd appreciate more handholding. How do they know about each other?

"When there's only one type argument, the angle brackets enclosing the type argument may look like XML/HTML tags, but they have nothing to do with JSX functionality."
This is such a great tip! The author(s) of this tutorial clearly took their time to think through ways that readers might get confused.

Okay the Fedify tutorial also comes with a little JSX tutorial which is great. I have a tendency when writing my own tutorials to put in little intros to technologies being used but I always wonder how helpful they are...glad to see from the learner's end that they are in fact very helpful!

ok setup took two minutes, it's possible i need to update my mental model of aggravating install processes are these days (or maybe it's a JS/TS vs Python thing...? but I think Python's gotten a lot better too)

2025-11-12 20:01:00 UTC

It's very long so there's basically no chance of doing this all in one sitting but...whatever, let's see how far I can get this afternoon with @npub1tlf…wz08's "build a federated microblog" tutorial: https://unstable.fedify.dev/tutorial/microblog
TBH I may get stuck with basic setup, I've written a lot of javascript but I've largely avoided having to learn JS/TS package management. 😂 (Fun fact, I learned Vue over React or Angular etc because you can build absurdly complex apps while still just importing vue via script tag)

In the last calendar year Spirit have been in three penalty kick shootouts.
Spirit have converted 10 out of 10 kicks.
Aubrey Kingsbury has stopped 8 of 11 kicks.

Thoughts on the game (which I just got back from...I left for this game at 8am 😭)
1. jesus christ spirit do you not care about our blood pressure
2. at a certain point, one has to wonder if it's something about aubrey that's making people take terrible PKs somehow
3. spirit defenders took 100% of the PKs and sank 100% of the PKs
4. if one Louisville player had to sink their PK I'm so glad it was boats
5. pretty worried about gabby and tara, we can't lose both

Love seeing the pictures of the #NoKings crowds. What would make me even happier is to know that each of those people is plugged into activist communities that will keep on building power and relationships every day, not just today. The people I've met through #FreeDC are the true silver lining of the dark cloud that is this Trump administration. It's not a sacrifice to spend my time with them - I enjoy it. I want that same feeling of purpose and connection for everyone who protested today.

We don't need dozens of national guard at Spirit games and we definitely don't need them harrassing people.

Great writeup here with some incredible quotes from Anna Heilferty.
“It’s been really just beautiful in how the crowd has come together. And I think in moments like this, especially everything that’s been going in DC, to have an organization like Free DC that really brings people together in these critical moments, gives them a voice, gives them somewhere to put energy when it may feel hopeless. It’s so important.”

Shout out also the other Dash players - Paige Nielsen, Yaz Ryan, Delanie Sheehan and Liz Beardsley - for following Anna Heilferty over to the supporters section and putting on the Free DC shirts.
Paige is a former Spirit, Liz Beardsley played at UMD and Yaz and Delanie are, as far as I can tell, simply awesome.
After the game I got to talk to Liz Beardsley who also signed my yellow card. I have a new favorite third string goalkeeper on the Houston Dash :)

Something that bothers me a lot is when people conflate "having compassion and understanding for people who hate you" with "letting people who hate you do whatever they want to you".
It's possible to have firm boundaries and to take urgent, protective action while also believing that everyone is fundamentally good at heart and being deeply curious about what happened to some people to make their fundamentally good hearts twisted enough to believe and do such vile things.
