There are a lot of technical changes listed in the article, but I wanted to highlight my personal favorite.
---
### New Screenshots and Subtitles
The original Frinkiac dataset had some data quality issues that had bugged us for years. Subtitle timing was slightly offset from when characters actually said the lines, which meant search results would sometimes land on a frame a second or two away from the moment you wanted. We re-did the subtitle extraction from scratch to fix the timing alignment.
While we were at it, we re-extracted all the screenshots at higher resolution. The original frames were 640x480; the new ones are sharper and hold up better when used in GIFs and comics, especially on high-DPI displays. This isn’t a perfect solution as the original SD presentation avoids some upscaling artifacts (especially over-sharpening), but overall we think it’s an improvement.
Oh, and we put up every episode now that they can be easily filtered. This gives us a current count of 4,990,964 frames across 802 episodes and the movie.

Lemmy feels about the same, but Reddit seems much worse.
Now to be fair I don't know if Reddit is actually worse, because when I browse Reddit now it's while I'm logged out and via a browser (force old.reddit.com and OldLander extensions). So the site is A) harder to navigate than it used to be and B) my experience is less curated and I see more crap and C) because my experience is less curated I've lost access to many of the niche communities.
As an example if I want to read some discussion about the recent Game of Thrones prequel series "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" I can find a small community here on Lemmy. Nice people, but too few of us.
So I go to Reddit. If I search I find r/AKOTSKTV which is fine, and I find r/GameOfThrones which is fine. But I have to know, as a previous Reddit user, that maybe r/ASOIAF is also a great choice. Or if I want some real shit r/freefolk is where the glory lives.
So for that universe I know where to go. But for a new series? For a new niche? For a new community? I don't know shit. I've found some of the more niche communities by luck. That's what I would have been subscribed to in the past. I would have been in the community and in the comments and discovery was natural.
But nowadays I just get the front page of Reddit, and the front page kinda sucks.
But Lemmy? Yeah it sucks sometimes too, but at least there is a community.

It's interesting from an academic perspective but it's much more generative than it is patching,
>While Welles wrote detailed notes about how he wanted The Magnificent Amersons to be cut, RKO did not follow them and the studio ultimately destroyed the negatives correlating to the film’s lost footage for storage reasons. Showrunner intends to work around those hurdles with a mix of AI-generated approximations of what Welles might have shot and sequences featuring live actors whose faces are manipulated with gen AI to look like members of the original film’s cast.
It might be a different story if the film was damaged and AI was simply repairing footage or filling in a few missing seconds but by all accounts this is creating new scenes.
Sometimes when films have deleted scenes we instead see storyboards to represent the scene. Replacing those storyboards with AI generated scenes might be convenient, but they're just a representation of what might have been, they're not the film.

That being said when even Disney is giving up on lawsuits you know we're in a bad place.
As for the actual argument, free speech just means freedom from consequences... from the government. If you loudly make an ass of yourself everyone else is allowed to laugh at you. If Disney thinks you're costing them money, they're allowed to fire you.
From a character perspective I'm bummed she got fired. I've never seen such a perfect character backstory told when Cara Dune was described as "From Alderan", we the audience immediately understood her character so much better. But it's hard to watch that character when I know the actor is a piece of shit.
