We went to hell and back for ya! We have fixed dependench hells that would even make the late nineties and early Y2K Linux distros blush.
Because a proper ecosystem is resilient and diverse. Not tied to a single OS with all its weird quircks.

Hello world :flan_wave:We announced a bit of maintenance earlier tonight, for updates. Those with a sharp eye might have spotted that we were already running the update released earlier today, containing security and bugfixes - v4.5.20. So why the heck should we announce a maintenance window?! :flan_awe: ###
BECAUSE WE DID IT :flan_hurrah:We are now at v4.7.4 :flan_hacker:
Just judging by the numbering - that should have been a fairly trivial update. But it was not. To the contrary actually. It has taken months of hard work, bug reports, fixes, frustration and more. Mastodon is not to blame here. Neither are we. More info will follow in a separate writeup.
But - we made it. And we are even ready for v5. When we mentioned before that we are in it for the long hail, we weren't kidding. You are a lovely, weird and truly exquisite community :flan_heart:
For now, special thanks to Joris and Bram whom have been of so much help :flan_hearts:

##
Maintenance announcement :flan_announcer:Tonight we will be pushing some updates and migrations for our Mastodon instance :flan_hacker:
This will cause brief interruptions. We will try to limit it as much as we can.###
Maintenance window :flan_peek:<li>Start: 2026-10-29 @ 20:30 UTC</li><li>End: 2026-10-29 @ 22:30 UTC</li>Follow the status during the [maintenance on our statuspage](https://status.exqinfra.nl/ ) :flan_popcorn:
As always: apologies for the inconvenience and thank you for sticking with us :flan_heart:

##
Community update :flan_announcer:With pain in our heart, we unfortunately have to inform you that Exquisite (Mastodon, Peertube and upcoming additions) are henceforth closed for signups.
There is **a lot** of context to this decision and it is not something that we take lightly. Or a step that we would like to take at all.
The main rationale behind this decision is two-fold. It mostly boils down to LLM-fueled campaigns geared towards the Fediverse (and Mastodon in particular). And to a lesser extend abuse by the folks we gave the opportunity to prove themselves to be part of the family.
This decision is hopefully not definitive. We still welcome new folks - if they are invited by a member of our community.

Maintenance announcementTomorrow, on Saturday 2026-10-10, we will update the OpenBSD host of our Mastodon instance - due to errata (security patches) released today :flan_hacker:
Follow the maintenance on [our statuspage](https://status.exqinfra.nl ).
As always thank you for your continued trust :flan_heart:

Stopping the Mastodon processes before snapshotting it makes a lot of sense here. Skipping the former means that if the update would cause issues, statusses that were fetched by the broken instance means that they are likely lost.
A status can be anything, from a public post to a DM. As a #MastoAdmin you don't want to cause the folks on your instance to be missing out on those - whether that be an innocent cat picure or a loveletter through a DM.
Much like email, if the remote instance tries delivery while the local instance is unavailable, it retries later.
With that in mind, we generally prefer a downtime of ten minutes every blue moon, over a dataloss of the same period.

##
Maintenance annoucement :flan_announcer:As you might be aware, the Exquisite infra is powered by #OpenBSD and #HardenedBSD. The OpenBSD project has released security patches today for the base system and programs that we use. Throughout the day, we will be applying these patches :flan_hacker:
The impact will be minimal as the nameservers, mailservers and various other services are setup redundant and in high availability.
Our Mastodon instance itself will have a downtime of about ten minutes (stopping the services, snapshotting the VM, update, reboot) which we will apply today after 22:00 (CEST).
As always, thank you for your patience and happy Tooting :flan_coffee: :flan_heart:

##
Policy update :flan_hacker:Well, not really a policy update - but a reiteration of our existing policy. AI content is **strictly prohibited**. Whether that be AI/LLM generated slop, or content that promotes the use of AI.
We do not make exceptions. Not ever. We have a giant installment of a more-than-human-sized slingshot and will most definitely use it to yeet AI influencers into outer space.

Updates, updates, updates :flan_hacker:To start off, some good news: [Exquisite.tube](https://exquisite.tube ) is now running the latest and greatest - PeerTube v8.3.0 :flan_hurrah:
**But there is more to share!**<li>We have applied extra mitigations against registration spam, both on Mastodon and Tube. </li><li>We are going to enable video downloading for the EuroBSDCon videos at our PT instance.</li><li>While we are on the latest version of the <code>v4.5</code> Mastodon series, newer branches cause quite a bit of headache. The current ETA for <code>v4.7</code> is a couple of weeks, tops.</li><li>Our Tube instance will be getting a dGPU, a shiny Intel ARC. Already in our possession, need to plan a trip to the DC. </li><li>And last but not least: there will be federated comms shortly(-ish). Powered by OpenBSD, running from Amsterdam.</li>
When all this is done and we are through with our todo.txt, we will be looking at adding additional services. Open to suggestions (requirement: has to be federated!) :flan_cool:

##
Incident Report :flan_blush:As you might have noticed, our Mastodon instance did suffer from an outage throughout the night. It started around 23:00 and was fixed around 09:30.
The root cause for this issue was a library mismatch which wasn't easily resolved. Even downgrading and restoring did not solve it.
Upon eventually finding a fix and implementing it, we have gathered the logs, dumps and will be filing a bug report with the Ruby gem that was the culprit :flan_hacker:
We are very, very sorry for this downtime.
To prevent this from happening again, we have made some internal changes:<li>Upgrading now automatically creates a snapshot of the machine, allowing easy rollback,</li><li>We will be making more use of the staging instance, allowing us to catch issues like this one,</li><li>Within a month we will be publishing our wiki including a statuspage. </li>
Thank you for your understanding and especially thank you for your continued trust. Now off to catch an hour of sleep :flan_XD: - and after that travelling to Brussels for EuroBSDcon :flan_hurrah:

Announcement :flan_announcer:The US government has shown massive overreach with [A/I](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autistici/Inventati#United_States_government_sanctions_(2026) ) - by suspending their .org domain.
Frequently used top level domains in the Fediverse are ultimately under the control of US-based registries.
While we deem the chance unlikely to be designated as a terrorist organisation, we began adding alternative domains that aren't under US control :flan_hacker:

2026-08-01 20:14:36 UTC

We have always kept and will continue to keep a close eye on security vulnerabilities, breaches and leaks. Mastodon dot social acted properly here - being transparent, reaching out to involved members, sharing what happened and what the possible consequences might be.
Thank you, Mastodon, for doing the right thing here.

Some details for the geeks, hackers and tech folks:
As always, we will use ZFS boot environments, which is natively supported by hbsd-update. This means should everything go south, we can easily roll back the upgrade.
In addition, we do have backups that are ~ 100km apart from our main DC in Amsterdam. So even in the worst possible scenario, we are still able to recover.
See you on other side. And as always, thank you for bearing with us! :flan_heart:

Exquisite.tube was just joined by SIMEON - a band creating lovely music. They might not be the first band to join the Fediverse, but it is an incredible honor to have yet another addition to our #Peertube server.
They have published the official video for [The Longing](https://exquisite.tube/w/7Z4vtk5ShRZehSK3zPiXR9 ) as well as a [live session](https://exquisite.tube/w/ch1n4QtoXKW3xXZAMo5v8X ) of the same track.
Please check them out and give them some love. More bands should follow this great example and join the Fediverse :flan_aww:

Upon request of an [Exquisite.tube](https://exquisite.tube ) member we've digged into the P2P functionality and its privacy implication. As a consequence, we have **disabled** P2P for streaming by default.
P2P video streaming means that your device shares the video while streaming it. This does expose your IP address (while having the video playback page open).
This only applies to new accounts. If you have an existing account, you can go to [your profile settings](https://exquisite.tube/my-account/settings ), untick the *'Help share videos being played'* option and click the *'Save video settings'*.
Please be mindful with this setting on other instances. We have the bandwidth to stream a large number of concurrent plays - smaller instances might not have that luxury. Ask the instance staff when in doubt.
Thank you!

PeerTube Security Update :flan_hacker:PeerTube v8.1.6, released earlier this week, patched some serious vulnerabilities that were exploited on some instances.
Solomon has a [good writeup](https://blog.solomon.tech/posts/may-peertube-security-incident/ ) and postmortem.
Our instance, [Exquisite.tube](https://exquisite.tube ) was patched within one hour of the release. We did investigate this issue and weren't affected by it. We continue to monitor the situation closely.
If you are running your own instance: you should upgrade **right now**, the release notes (from v8.1.6 onwards) contain the relevant info on how to check and mitigate these issues.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need help. Keeping the Fediverse safe and sound is a shared responsibility.

Important announcementWe were notified by the great folks at @npub1y2r…kvzk that we had two accounts suspected as being part of a coordinated Russian bot network involving thousands of LLM-supported automated accounts.
Upon further investigation, this suspicion seems to be correct. We have suspended the accounts immediately. Further digging in, we've found a third account, which was also suspended.
In an addition, we have reported the email domains (which seem to be randomly generated) to the relevant parties.
More information about this issue can be found at [IFTAS](https://about.iftas.org/library/suspected-portal-kombat-accounts/ ).
As a countermeasure, we have disabled invites on [Exquisite.social](https://exquisite.social ) as they bypass account approval.

Right now, the Dutch law doesn't mandate age verification. It is unlikely to happen short term, but not impossible.
We are currently exploring mitigative measures should such a law ever came into effect. We will never comply with such a law on the "Exquisite-verse".
Age verification is wrong on so many levels that elaborating it would become nothing short of an essay. So we'll leave that as an exercise for the reader.

Hello and goodmorning lovely, and beautiful Fediverse :flan_coffee:
Time for a small update on what has been going on behind the scenes:<li>We are migrating our storage backend from Minio to SeaweedFS. Blowfish do like to swim between the seaweed, rather than an ocean of crap. The storage backend is shared across our services (Mastodon, Peertube and soon others).</li><li>Next we'll roll out the first service from Exquisite.chat - a full blown, OMEMO compatible XMPP server. Once done, an IRC server will follow - and hopefully we succeed in bridging the two of 'em. </li><li>We are looking into options for SSO, where our members can have a single handle / nickname across the services.</li><li>And while doing all this, we are writing docs as we go. The goal for the documentation is not just to offer transparency, but to share the tools and knowledge so that others can selfhost the Fedi too and replicate our setup. </li>
This year, we'll double down on liberating the social web. 2026 promises to be a truly Exquisite year. :flan_hacker: :flan_heart:

Push messages via ntfySome Mastodon clients use ntfy.sh for push messaging - which is a decentralised, more privacy-friendly way. However, the official instance regularly ratelimits connections :flan_nooo:
We have setup our own ntfy instance! You can now use [ntfy.exquisite.network](https://ntfy.exquisite.network ) for all your push messaging needs :flan_hurrah:
We do not log anything. And ofcourse, it runs #OpenBSD :flan_hacker:
Happy Tooting and Pushing you all!

Updates!Buh-bye Redis :flan_wave: Welcome to Valkey :flan_hurrah:
During the update early September, we've noticed that the new Sidekiq version that Mastodon uses, a newer version of Redis was required. We couldn't satisfy that dependency because it wasn't available.
This required a custom patch and had our instance on the older Sidekiq version. Until now, that is! Inspired by the best barista, Stefano, we've setup a jail on HardenedBSD, slapped Valkey in it, connected the fibers and did some plumbing :flan_hacker:
And here we are. Newest Valkey, newest Sidekiq and with more memory appointed to it than you could possibly phantom.##
LETS GET TOOTING! :flan_guns:

Maintenance announcementThe media backend (S3) will be briefly unavailable this morning, due to updates. This unfortunately does require a reboot; the downtime will be < 10 minutes.
We are working on adding some redundancy for the main apps (Mastodon, Peertube), but this unfortunately will not go for our backend. 48TB is a lot to add redundancy.
We do use ZFS RAID and we do have backups, naturally.

Yeah, we did up the glitch-soc commit.
Also, why are you tooting to yourself from two different accounts 'mate'? Go home, you are drunk. smh.

We've rolled out an update that fixes an issue.

We have just rolled out EXQ2.13 on our Mastodon instance. This update pulls in the new glitch-soc code that fixes the broken "Private mentions" page, which was an upstream issue.
One of our members reported this, but had to backlog it for some days due to us being at the fantastic #EuroBSDcon. Apologies for the delay.

Announcement**A humble goodbye to all users - and hello to our lovely members and remote accounts!**
We have started to work on dropping the 'user' designator and switching them out for more friendly and respective forms. Big tech has users. Drugs has users. The Fediverse and small web don't.
The edited translations can be found [on our Codeberg repo](https://codeberg.org/exquisite/mastodon/src/branch/main/translations ). Any help with other languages is very welcome!

Instance rules updateWe have made a slight modification to our instance rules, specifically added rule # 8, as an extension:
> Also strictly prohibited is misinformstion (eg: anti-vaxx, WHO conspiracies, 5G being used for mindcontrol, anti-GrapheneOS shilling). This will also get you permanently banned and at risk of being yeeted into space.
The misinformation policy was already in place on [our Peertube instance](https://exquisite.tube ) and now reflected on Mastodon as well. We have added @npub1kwa…e0nj, to take a really clear stance against the abuse that the project had and has to endure.
We did not have misinformation before - just laying out the foundation for our lovely and growing community.
Thank you all and happy Tooting :flan_guns:
